Cities in the Grand Theft Auto games are large population centres. Many GTA games contain only one city, but the first Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto: London 1961, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto VI contain multiple.
GTA games are replete with fictional cities, many of which are based on real-life locations:
- Liberty City is based on New York City in the 2D Universe and HD Universe, and a mix of various cities (New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Chicago and Baltimore) in the 3D Universe.[1] Liberty City is the most used city so far, with different renditions featuring in each universe.
- New Guernsey is a neighboring state of Liberty City in the 2D Universe, containing Guernsey City (based on Jersey City).
- Alderney is a neighboring state to the State of Liberty in the HD Universe, containing Alderney City (based on Jersey City and Newark).
- San Andreas in the 2D Universe is a city based on San Francisco. San Andreas in the 3D Universe is a state comprised of three major cities: Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). In the HD Universe, San Andreas is also a state, made up of Los Santos (Los Angeles) and the incorporated cities of Davis (Compton), Del Perro (Santa Monica) and Rockford Hills (Beverly Hills).
- Los Santos is a counterpart to Los Angeles in both the 3D and HD Universes.
- San Fierro is a counterpart to San Francisco in both the 3D and HD Universes.
- Las Venturas is a counterpart to Las Vegas in both the 3D and HD Universes.
- Ludendorff, North Yankton, is a small, rural town based to Fargo, North Dakota, featured in Grand Theft Auto V and can only be encountered during Prologue and Bury the Hatchet.
- London is a rendition of the real city in Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1961.
- Manchester is a rendition of the real city in the multiplayer of Grand Theft Auto: London 1961.
- Vice City is a counterpart to Miami in the 2D and HD Universes, but only influenced by it in 3D Universe. In the 2D and 3D Universes, Vice City is set in Florida, USA, but in the HD Universe, it is set in Florida's counterpart, Leonida.
- Anywhere City in Grand Theft Auto 2 is not based on any specific city.
- Carcer City is a Rust Belt city located in the United States heartland [2] said to be neighboring Liberty City. Whilst not featured in any game, it is mentioned in Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V; and is the setting for Manhunt.
- Cottonmouth in Manhunt 2 is based on large southern US cities, including New Orleans, Charleston, Atlanta [3] and has various references to other GTA cities.
- Bullworth is the setting for Bully. Has various references to the GTA Series. One for example, on television in GTA IV. The city is situated in New England.
- "The Capital" is a city mentioned in the miles traveled stats of Grand Theft Auto IV. It may refer to either Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States) or to the unnamed capital of the State of Liberty.
Trivia
- Vice City and Miami coexist in the 3D Universe, as confirmed in the Francis International Airport website for Grand Theft Auto III.
- Ludendorff is one of three locations to feature snowfall, the others being Los Santos (during Christmas time in both GTA V and GTA Online) and Liberty City (during the mission Saint Mark's Bistro in GTA San Andreas).
- While the real-world city of Los Angeles, CA, does not canonically exist in the HD Universe (being supplemented by the fictional city of Los Santos), some songs on the radio in GTA V anomalously mention LA and its neighbourhoods in their titles and lyrics, such as X's Los Angeles and Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's Hollywood Nights.[4]
- Furthermore, the state of Mississippi is mentioned in the title of Mountain's Mississippi Queen. It is unknown if Mississippi exists in any of Grand Theft Auto's universes.
- In the 2D and 3D universes, the state of Florida exists and is the state in which Vice City lies. However, in the HD universe, Florida is instead replaced by the fictional state of Leonida, which also homes Vice City.
