Vehicle Features/Custom Vehicle License Plates

Custom vehicle license plates were first explored in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, where Love Fist's limousine features LUVFIST plates, the only instance of a custom license number in the game. With the use of more flexible license plate graphics in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, more vehicles would appear with customized license numbers. However, the custom license plates cannot be saved in garages; once a car is saved in a garage, its plate will become random. Custom license plates returned for Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online with the option of the player creating their own custom plate through the iFruit App.

Glitches

• After patch 1.07, there was a massive glitch involving the custom license plates of player's personal vehicles in story mode. The license plates on the personal vehicles of players would change so that they would read "ALAN 0". This glitch would get applied to the protagonists' personal vehicles (such as Michael's Obey Tailgater), and it would also rarely get applied to any vehicle inside one of the player's safehouse garages. This glitch seemed to be more prevalent among players who have a GTA Online account, and have used the Rockstar Social Club application to change their online vehicle's license plate. It is unknown what factor of the game caused this glitch, but it appears to have been patched at the 1.09 update, as it is not present in subsequent versions.

It is also a possible reference to the Cypress Hill song "A To The K", as the hook goes "A to the mother fucking K homeboy, A to the mother fucking K". This is a reference to the AK-47 rifle.

• In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, only the front plate of Ryder's Picador reads 'SHERM'. The rear plate is a standard plate.
• In Grand Theft Auto V, when you are in Los Santos Customs and put a "custom" license plate for your car, it might say "GALARDO". This happens very rarery though, it's a reference to Lamborghini Galardo.
