The Imponte Ruiner is a muscle car appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, and due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI.
Influence[]
HD Universe[]
The Ruiner is prominently inspired by the mix of the third-generation Pontiac Firebird with the third-generation Chevrolet Camaro, seen on the elements of the front fascia and the whole rear fascia, and cues from a variety of other 1980s muscle cars and coupés. In GTA IV the hood features an optional offset cowl induction hood strikingly similar to those found on 1982-1984 Trans Ams and 1985-1992 Firebird Formulas. The front fascia elements, wheel design, boot, and tail light layout are modeled after the Mitsubishi Starion, while the headlights and exhausts resemble those from the Nissan 300ZX Z31. The front bumper seems to be a mix of both Starion and 300ZX bumpers.
The tail lights and trunk spoiler are shaped like those of the Camaro, but the area between and below the tail lights better resembles the Firebird, with badging positioned where the Firebird logo would be. Ruiners may feature "RUINER" decals and stripes along the lower part of the doors, much like those of the Camaro IROC-Z, although the stripes and decals share colors with the ground effects, much like the 1982–1984 Trans Ams.
Design[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
The Ruiner assumes a similar role and build from the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas iteration of the Buffalo, but sports modernized features around. The front end has a slanted profile, with small intakes on the lower edges and a central grille/intake below the bumper area, just behind a plate holder. The turn signals can be seen on the bumper, while a set of square-shaped lights can be seen on the hood area within black housings, under small hatches that resemble pop-up headlights (though no animation is present). The section between the main lights bears silver "IMPONTE" lettering next to the driver-side lamp, while the front of the hood bears the manufacturer emblem.
On the sides, a set of marker lights and silver "IMPONTE" lettering are seen on the front, while the arches and the skirts have a slightly flared profile. The doors have black horizontal handles and body-colored mirror shells with black supports, while the greenhouse area bears a plastic trim around the windows, a painted C-pillar with "450GT" badges on either side and a central frame on the roof area. The rear trunk lid/hatch bears a lip spoiler.
The rear end of the car features a plastic panel on the center bearing numerous badges, while the outer sections have sectioned tail lights consisting of L-shaped indicator units, upper brake units, middle main units and inner reverse units (with the lower red ones between the indicators and the reverse lights not being used). The center of the bumper features a flat section with a plate holder, while the driver-side section at the bottom has a cut-out for the twin circular exhaust tips.
The Ruiner features a T-top roof, which comes in three different variations: with solid roof panels, with glass roof panels or without roof panels. It may feature a plain hood or with an offset cowl induction hood. Ruiners can spawn in a variety of colors, with the primary one on the body and the secondary one on the mirror shells and in the form of stripes on the lower side, displaying the car's name. A tertiary color is also available for the rims, which is set to white or gold (the latter only available in at least three color sets). The rims have five wide spokes with a pentagon-shaped center and black details.
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
The Ruiner retains its design from GTA IV, with only minor changes. It features a quad exhaust instead of the dual exhaust present on the GTA IV version. The turbo hood bulge is no longer available and a traditional ram air hood (similar to the Buffalo from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas) can be applied to it instead. There have also been minor changes to the badges and decals.
As of Patch 1.29, the three T-Top roof options from the GTA IV version are present but cannot be changed by the player and are random at spawn. All variants spawns with its windows rolled up, even without roof panels. Color distribution is the same as before, but the mirrors changed to receive the primary color and the interior stitching matches with the same primary one. The Ruiner's rim design is the same, able to be found in Los Santos Customs under the Muscle category, named "Mecha". There is also an off-road counterpart under the Off Road category, named "Dune Basher". Unique to the stock rims, however, is that the wheel color has a darker tone (although painting the stock wheels is only possible on Content Creator).

Performance[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
In GTA IV, the car handles quite loosely, being able to perform power slides with ease, and in the hands of a skilled driver, can prove to be an excellently handling vehicle. The car can brake easily, and can accelerate quickly, leaving the player with a well-rounded muscle car, perfect for any criminal getaway. Just be careful for the lack of durability and low ground clearance. The Ruiner is also a great choice for races.
According to its badges, the Ruiner is powered by a large 450 cubic inches (7.4 liter) Fuel injected V8 engine, which is supported by its engine model (a single cam V8, judging by its small details on the cam covers), coupled to a 5-speed gearbox. Its engine sound is identical to that of the Faction and Sabre.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
Acceleration is very good, close to cars with a much higher price tag. Its top speed is also excellent; it is brisk, yet controllable.
The suspension is moderately firm, giving the Ruiner much needed grip in the turns, while still loose enough to have some fun with. Handling-wise, the Ruiner is a stellar performer, with constant grip, controllable loss of traction, and a lot of torque. Braking is very good, if not among the best in its class. Crash deformation is acceptable, but can only withstand a few high-speed crashes before stalling.
As in GTA IV, the Ruiner is powered by the same 450cui Fuel-injected V8 (according to badges), coupled to a 5-speed gearbox in a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The engine sound is the same as the one on the Dominator.

Variants[]
Ruiner 2000Grand Theft Auto Online |
(Rear quarter view) |
The Ruiner 2000 is an armed variant of the Ruiner added in the Import/Export Update. This version has machine guns, rockets, parachute and a mechanism to jump over obstacles. |
Special Variants[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
- Ivan Bytchkov drives a unique Ruiner during Ivan the Not So Terrible. It is painted black with a unique golden trim. The car may appear with one of a variety of iridescence paint tints, including, but not limited to, red, blue, and gold, making the car's body color unique.
- The car can be obtained after Ivan abandons his car. However, the player must get in the car to be recognized as a car driven by the player. The player may continue to chase Ivan after getting in and out of the car. If done, it will be in the middle of the street where Ivan abandoned it after the chase. Note that whichever car the player chased Ivan in will despawn. Due to the nature of the chase, Ivan's Ruiner will be damaged, but will not be severe enough to inhibit it from being driven to the player's safehouse.
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
- A wrecked variant of the Ruiner 2000, named "
ruiner3
" also appears as a prop for the second Special Vehicle Work mission, Breakdown Recovery. Although it has details of that of the Ruiner 2000, the car's rims match those of the original Ruiner. The vehicle cannot be obtained in regular gameplay nor accessed during the mission. However, it is considered an entirely separate, driveable vehicle sharing the same .gxt2/entry name and having invisible wheels (the actual wheels are simply part of the vehicle's chassis and do not affect the handling in any way).

- In Grand Theft Auto Online, the default radio stations are grouped by genre. The Ruiner uses the "Rock" group which can play:
- Los Santos Rock Radio
- Radio Mirror Park
- Kult FM (Enhanced Editions only)
- Vinewood Boulevard Radio (May not play due to a three station limit within the group)
- Due to the "
ruiner3
" prop being set as a driveable vehicle, this variant also shares the "Rock" group.
Trivia[]
General[]
- The Ruiner's rear license plateholder reads "Ruining Imports Since '67". 1967 was the year GM debuted the F-Body. This gives further evidence that the Ruiner is based on the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, as 1967 is the year that they were both introduced.
- One of the available paint-jobs for the Ruiner is black with gold trim and stripes. This could be a reference to the similarly painted Pontiac Trans Am driven by Jerry Reed's character in the movie Smokey and the Bandit Part 3
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
- The driver-side fender features a silver "IMPONTE" badging between the wheel and the doors, but the passenger-side fender is blank.
- The Ruiner featured a car bra in the beta version of the game.[3]
Grand Theft Auto V[]
- Due to its similarities with the Nissan 300ZX Z31, the Ruiner in GTA V can be given massive "Shakotan" exhaust pipes, a large "Drag Wing" spoiler, a massive front splitter, and a visible oil cooler, all of which are modifications derived from the Japanese "Shakotan" car scene.
- In the original game, the interior of the Ruiner has a unique blue interior that carries over from IV, with digital instrument cluster (similar to many real-life sports cars from the 80's). However, in the enhanced version, the interior is standard muscle car one shared with other unrelated models.
Bugs/Glitches[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
- If the player manages to open or remove the rear trunk of the vehicle, the inner side of the hatch will have textures of Liberty City license plates on it.[4]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- Likely a developer mistake, one of the rocker covers (specifically the left one; looking from the front of the car) is slightly smaller in width than the opposing rocker cover. Several vehicles with the same engine model have this too.
- Likely due to reused LOD models from GTA IV, the mirrors appear to be the secondary color from a certain distance, but they switch to the primary color when closer. This is best seen with any combination that denotes the secondary color easily (i.e. black primary color with gold secondary color).
