Firefly Projects

Firefly Projects is a large housing project in southeastern Broker. It is bordered to the north by Deadwood Street and to the northwest by Onondaga Avenue (South Slopes); to the west also by Onondaga Avenue (Hove Beach); to the south by Crockett Avenue (Beachgate); and to the east by the Broker-Dukes Expressway and the Broker Sound.

Character

The Firefly Projects is a working-class, run-down and heavily deprived neighborhood which consists of large housing complexes and projects. The Projects in Firefly are actually the largest housing projects in Broker. The area is highly residential and is infamous for a very high crime rate. Demographically, the area is primarily made up of African-Americans. The area suffers from intense gang violence as well as a large drug problem and is one of the more active areas of Liberty City for drug trafficking (especially Broker). Statistically, the Firefly Projects often has a higher crime rate than any other neighborhood in Broker.

Aside from its extensive apartment/projects complex, Firefly Projects also houses a train yard that branches off the Broker Line.

Common pedestrians in the Firefly Projects include gang bangers, homeless people, regular pedestrians, and prostitutes that spawn at night.

Influence

The Firefly Projects are primarily based on Brownsville, East New York and Ocean Hill as these neighborhoods exhibit the same social problems and crime rate. The project buildings themselves are based on the Luna Park Co-Op Houses, located on Coney Island, hence the name Firefly Projects (since Firefly Island is based on Coney Island). The area is also geographically based on Sheepshead Bay.

Gang control

The area is fully-controlled by Hustlers. They can be seen all around the projects and hanging around the basketball courts. The Russian Mafia can be seen in the western part of the neighborhood, due to its proximity to Hove Beach. If the player opens fire in this specific area, the two gangs will shoot each other in several cases.

Transport

The Liberty City Subway does not serve the area; however, residents in the southern and western areas may choose to use Hove Beach station in its namesake neighborhood, while those in the northern and eastern blocks might find it more convenient to head north to South Slopes for the Schottler station.

Trivia

• Firefly Projects is notable for its glitch-laden swing-sets, capable of flinging, at great heights and distances, vehicles that push against them. While there are four such swings in the area, only two are situated in an area that has ample room for players to drive in with a moderate-sized vehicle. The swingsets are also known to hit and fling players in contact with the swing through the same process.
