iOS (previously iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc.

Overview[]

Originally unveiled in 2007 for the iPhone, it presently powers the company's line of mobile devices, including the iPhone, and iPod Touch. Variants of iOS were used for the iPad and Apple TV until they were forked into iPadOS and tvOS respectively.

Grand Theft Auto Titles on iOS[]

Currently, there are five Grand Theft Auto games that have been released to iOS: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, is available having been re-released due to relatively poor sales of the original Nintendo DS version of the game. Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Year Anniversary Edition and Grand Theft Auto Vice City: 10th Year Anniversary Edition, were released, as the name implies, for the ten year anniversary for Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories also released, but not under the name "10th year anniversary".[1]

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars[]

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was quietly released on the App Store at midnight on January 18th, 2010. The game features the same missions available for the Nintendo DS and PSP versions. One difference is the lack of Rockstar Games Social Club - the bonus Xin missions, which were previously only available after completing the main story line, locating the two Lions of Fo and syncing the device to Social Club, are now available without the use of Social Club. A new radio station allowed players to use a custom radio track-list from their iTunes. This version features the enhanced graphics of the PSP version released after the DS iteration, but re-introduces the touch screen functionality of the DS, replacing the quicktime events suplemented in the PSP port.

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition[]

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition was released for iOS devices on December 15th, 2011. The year 2011 marks the tenth year since Grand Theft Auto III was released. The game is essentially a port of Grand Theft Auto III with updated textures and resolution. Otherwise, there are no other obvious changes. Due to the iPhone lacking physical buttons, the developer of the port, War Drum Studios, supplies on-screen touch controls which can be remapped. The game was originally support the iPhone 4s but support has been added for the iPhone 4.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City: 10 Year Anniversary Edition[]

Grand Theft Auto Vice City: 10 Year Anniversary Edition was released for iOS devices on December 6th, 2012. The year 2012 marks the tenth year since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released. The game is essentially a port of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with updated textures and resolution however the crouch and cheat abilities were removed from the game. Rockstar announced that it would include "native high-resolution graphics and several enhancements unique to the iOS and Android platforms including updated character models and lighting effects, new and more precise firing and targeting options, a fully customizable control layout and native support for retina display devices". The game was supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, all iPad models, 4th and 5th generation iPod touch.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was released for iOS devices on December 12th, 2013. December 2013 is just 10 months before the 10 year anniversary of the game's release. The game includes massively improved graphics and controls, however the ability to cheat, 1 driving school lesson and 2 bike school lessons were removed. The player uses touch screen buttons to control although iOS controllers can be used. The game is supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, the 5th Gen iPod touch, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad mini with Retina Display[2].

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was released for iOS devices on December 17th, 2015. The game is supported on iPhone 5 and 6 series, the 6th Gen iPod Touch, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, iPad Mini with Retina Display,, iPad Mini 3, and iPad Mini 4. Like GTA Vice City, this version was updated to include native high-resolution graphics and several enhancements unique to the iOS and Android platforms including updated character models and lighting effects, new and more precise firing and targeting options, a fully customizable control layout and native support for retina display devices. Custom Soundtrack was also added, function similar to GTA Chinatown Wars in which players can create a playlist titled GTALCS to be used in game.

Companion Apps[]

iFruit[]

In 2013, the IFruit App was released to Android devices, acting as a companion app to Grand Theft Auto V. The app allowed players to view listings for other Grand Theft Auto titles, customize their in-game cars with the Los Santos Customs app, and train Franklin's dog Chop with the Chop the Dog app. Removed on December 12, 2022.

GTAV The Manual[]

In 2013, soon after the release of GTA V, GTAV: The Manual was released to Android devices; a digital manual and interactive map for the game.
