Recently acquired in a Fort Zancudo yard sale, all our APCs come direct from active service. Equipped with a turret-mounted cannon and portholes for small arms fire, they're able to carry up to four heavily armed mercenaries pretty much anywhere across land or water. And if you squint it's quite good-looking, in a merciless-occupation-of-your-homeland kind of way.
Warstock Cache & Carry description.

The HVY APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) is an infantry fighting vehicle first appearing in The Ballad of Gay Tony and later returning to Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the Gunrunning update.

Influence[]

The Ballad of Gay Tony[]

The APC bears a striking resemblance to the Russian BRDM-2, as seen in the overall shape, front windshield, vents at the back and front fascia, while the side profile, side doors, and rectangular side windows are taken from the American Cadillac Gage Commando. The single headlight layout is similar to the BTR-90, while the turret seems to be based on the one found on the D-944.00 PSZH APC that features the 14.5 mm KPVT Machine gun, firing sabot explosive rounds. The flat rear may have been inspired by the WZ-550 4x4 APC. A few additional elements may have been taken from the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle, General Motors LAV I and II, Dragoon 300, Fiat CM6614, and TM-170.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

The APC returns in Grand Theft Auto Online with small tweaks to the design and new amphibious capabilities, due to which the side doors were removed, making it closer to the BRDM-2. The turret's model is visually unchanged; however, now the APC can be modified with an anti-air missile launcher, which takes inspiration from the 9K31 Strela-1, a highly mobile, short-range, low-altitude infrared-guided SAM system used on the SA-9 "Gaskin", a variant of the BRDM-2. However, it has two additional launchers on each side, similar to the 9K33 Osa in that aspect.

Design[]

The Ballad of Gay Tony[]

Nothing says "I've made it in this town" like a N.O.O.S.E armored personnel carrier, equipped with a 360-degree rotatable turret and explosive ordnance.
— Official website description

The APC was created to fill a role similar to the S.W.A.T. Tank from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the Rhino. The front end of the vehicle has a wedge shape and features a flat bumper with a red strobe light in the center (in place of the BRDM-2's trim board), along with a reinforced frame that extends above the front's height. The upper area of the front also assumes a slanted shape and features two circular headlights that are partially covered by mesh gratings, as well as two large rear-view mirrors and two hooks for winching (as seen in the mission Caught With Your Pants Down). The windshield area consists of dual windows with unusable shutters on the frontal area, rectangular windows on the front quarters, a long antenna on the passenger side, and what looks like a sighting device on the driver side.

The vehicle has slanted sides and large wheel arches, with the front ones having more room than the rear ones. The lower halves of the vehicle feature large side steps at the bottom and smaller ones above that are intended for the occupants of the vehicle, while the upper halves have rectangular windows and two winching hooks on the rear portions. Large access doors can be seen near the front wheels, which have long handles. On the roof area, the frontal section features small periscope-like side windows and unusable hatches, while the rear section has six cover flaps for the engine bay, an amber beacon light on the driver side, and a long antenna on the rear-right edge. The middle section mounts a round turret that has a red strobe light and a smaller antenna on top.

The rear end of the vehicle is flat in shape, featuring two protruding details on the lower edges and a red strobe light in the lower center, while the upper corners mount a set of circular tail lights, consisting of upper red units and lower turn signals. The underside of the vehicle is rather basic, having the corresponding axles and diffs.

The interior of the vehicle is quite similar to the S.W.A.T. and lacks a dedicated dashboard or steering wheel. In addition, the seats are located far behind the windshield area and use carbon-fiber textures.

The vehicle is only available in a dark/matte green color with worn details, giving the impression of a rough-style bodywork. In the files, however, the vehicle spawns in a black color, which is only visible on part of the rear-view mirrors and the side steps. It uses a set of industrial wheels that are similar to the ones from the Securicar and the Enforcer.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

So, obviously, it's an aquatic tank. It can go from land to water and water to land, if you take care of it, it'll take care of you. And it's got a cannon... which helps.
Agent 14 during the mission Offshore Assets.

The APC returns mostly unchanged from its previous iteration. However, the side doors have been removed and the roof hatches were tweaked to become functional access doors, while two cover flaps from the engine bay were removed in favour of two access hatches. The sides also appear to have gun portholes, while the rear end features a tow hitch that is able to tow the Anti-Aircraft Trailer. The default NOOSE livery is removed, and in place, numerous camo liveries can optionally be applied to the vehicle, while the strobe lights and beacon are absent.

The interior of the vehicle was changed as well, being a mostly black interior with no visible seats. The driver and main gunner sit in the front and closer to the windshield area, while the rear passengers/gunners sit next to the engine bay and face the side of the vehicle.

The vehicle can only be painted with a primary color, which is applied to the entirety of the bodywork. It also retains the same wheel design.

The vehicle is still equipped with a small cannon turret, but two machine guns mounted within the vehicle are added, which are operated by the rear passengers. The vehicle can be modified with an anti-air missile launcher in place of the cannon turret.

Performance[]

The Ballad of Gay Tony[]

Vehicle[]

The APC's performance is what is expected from a large APC; a deadly vehicle. The vehicle has a moderate speed, which is beneficial for aiming at targets and for control. The vehicle's heavy weight means it is deadly to other road users, it can ram other cars out of the way with little trouble, however, cars tend to become stuck under the vehicle's front area, meaning the APC eventually suffers by slowing down, and acceleration can be costly. More so, acceleration is horrible; it takes well over 6-8 seconds to start to move at more than a running pace, and it takes extremely long to reach top speed. In small alleys or cramped streets, players can easily outrun an APC that is starting to accelerate due to this fact. Furthermore, braking is also very poor, and it usually will end up smashing into a wall or other cars well before it comes to a full stop. As such, the APC is a very slow vehicle, and is not a good choice for chasing other players in nearly any other vehicle.

In terms of handling, the APC has a moderate turning radius; it can turn rather quickly, but the loose suspension tends to cause the entire vehicle to lean to one side, but again, thanks to its weight, it does not seem to roll-over when cornering, and its top speed is low enough to avoid this. Braking is what is expected for a vehicle of its size; moderate. The vehicle tends to lag in braking, and cannot be avoided unless cruising at even lower speeds. Because of the shovel-shaped front and high suspension, the APC can sort small barriers easily. It easily flings other vehicles out of the way, and can ram through countless vehicles with little to no damage at all, though the APC will slow down very quickly. Players should take great caution at ramming a car at the APC's top speed, as it usually blows up the car instantly, and heavily damaging the APC in the process. On a similar note, players should also avoid shooting another vehicle to where it catches on fire, and then ramming into it, as the force of the cannon and ramming the car is enough to explode it instantly right under the APC, dealing massive damage to it.

Compared to many vehicles, the APC has a strong bodywork and does not deform easily when crashing with other vehicles or structures, even at its top speed. It is, however, able to be deformed by unorthodox means (i.e. letting a Subway Car crush the vehicle against a structure).

The engine sound is loud and powerful, and sounds similar to a diesel engine. It does not rev that high due to the weight of the vehicle and nature of the engine, however it provides a large amount of power to all 4 wheels through two differentials, in an equal distribution (50-50). Despite its apparent design, the APC is not amphibious.

Defense[]

In terms of durability, the APC is very strong. The occupants are safe inside, as no bullet can pass through the APC's windows (like the Securicar's windows), as long as the doors are still in place. In addition, the tires are bulletproof.

While it is easily capable of tanking gunfire, it does go down quickly. The APC's rear engine bay is the weakest part of the vehicle, and even a small amount of gunfire directed there can set it on fire. As tested, the APC's rear engine bay is capable of taking exactly 50 shots from any of the fully-automatic weapons in the game; even the weak Micro SMG can set the APC on fire with a single magazine, with any more damage making it explode. The APC is very weak towards explosives, being able to take exactly 4 RPG rockets to the front and sides, and a single rocket to the rear; the Grenade Launcher can also set it on fire in two shots. The APC is relatively durable towards Grenades and Sticky Bombs, taking a decent amount of them to set the APC on fire. For the rest of the APC, it can take thousands of rounds from any other weapons, easily brushing them off.

The Buzzard's miniguns can also do about the same damage as other handheld firearms to the APC. The Hydra 70 rockets mounted on the Buzzard also do very large amounts of damage to the APC, easily taking it down with 3-4 rockets to the engine bay, and slightly more to the rest of the APC.

The Annihilator's explosive miniguns can destroy it almost instantly. As the explosive rounds introduced to the Annihilator in the GTA IV episodes replace the original, weaker rounds, using this helicopter becomes an effective tactic of destroying one. The damage from the explosive miniguns has about the same power as the Rocket Launcher.

Weaponry[]

The main turret on the vehicle is very powerful. While not causing explosions as loud, big, and instant as the Rhino in past GTAs, the cannon is much faster and therefore better for causing chaos and destruction in large proportions. The fire rate is similar to that of the Valkyrie featured in Grand Theft Auto Online, and the sound is also a lower-pitch sound of the aforementioned helicopter. The damage of the turret is notable, wherein it takes an average of 5 to 6 shots (depending on the vehicle's durability and size) before the target vehicle bursts into flames. At constant firing, it usually takes around 20 shots before the vehicle finally explodes (although, leaving the vehicle in flames also leads to it eventually blowing up, regardless of how many more shots are fired). The shots it fires cause not only damage to the engine of target vehicles but also, to the bodywork; dramatically. The target vehicle's body will deform majorly when shot at, with rear ends, front ends and roofs twisting and deforming. In terms of targeting pedestrians, the APC somewhat fails. Although the fire-rate of the APC is very fast, the explosion size is similar to that of a sticky bomb, and due to the lack of any type of aiming dot, the accuracy is poor, but because the shells are also tracer-type rounds, the player, with enough practice, can use those as a quasi-reticle. It somewhat fails at killing pedestrians in one shot when they are eventually hit by an explosion, but they often die with the rough impact on hard surfaces because of the knockback. It should be noted that the APC’s firing range is actually infinite, however the render distance for the explosion is relatively small, thus making it hard to aim at distant targets.

The turret rotating speed is very fast, and even faster in the PC version thanks to mouse control. This allows the APC to be very tactical and strategic, and allows the player to be fast at reacting to attackers. The upwards and downwards movement of the APC, however, is very restricted, so aircraft are tricky to target unless they are low flying, leaving the helicopter able to whittle away at the APC's health, with relative impunity. Also, when driving, the turret automatically tries to aim forward, requiring the player to come to a full stop to aim accurately.

During Multiplayer sessions, the APC's turret can vary in rate of fire, which can render it deadly against targets. Similarly, the explosion effect of the main gun may disappear during low connectivity with the server, resulting in a regular projectile with devastating power against vehicles.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

Vehicle[]

The vehicle's handling has been overhauled, performing similar to other similar sized vehicles, particularly the Insurgent Pick-Up. Its size is no problem for its ability in speed and power, and features nimble handling and a large increase in suspension dampening, meaning the vehicle suffers from much less body roll and pitch than in TBoGT. Also, the APC is quite stable and has a tendency to stay upright in the event of a roll over, making it easy to climb areas where other vehicles would lose balance and roll over. Again, the shovel-shaped front allows the vehicle to sort out small obstacles and vehicles, but the changes regarding the vehicle's air control makes it easy to stabilize on jumps and avoid crashing head-on towards the ground.

Another ability the APC features is its amphibious capabilities. The vehicle can be fully submerged without damage, but will return to and float on the surface. It can be driven around on the water and remain fully functional. However, it takes time to accelerate when stationary and greatly struggles to reverse, moving slower than walking pace. When stationary, the vehicle may end up moving far away from its initial location because of the waves (especially on stormy weather), which can become a problem in situations where the player needs to go to a location in the middle of the ocean and leave the vehicle for a period of time.

The engine sound is also different. Rather than the smooth engine sound from TBoGT, the APC has a noisy diesel engine, similar to that of the Half-track.

Defense[]

Durability is still superior to many large vehicles, although not as tolerable as the Rhino Tank. However, its armor can be upgraded to withstand up to five Sticky Bombs before exploding on the next one, making it significantly more durable than the Rhino. However, players may get hurt with gunfire, as the windows are no longer bulletproof.

With 100% Armor Upgrade, the APC can take one of the following:

Weaponry[]

Compared to its previous iteration, the APC features a large variety of weapons, which makes it an excellent team-oriented vehicle; a main weapon that is operated by the front passenger instead of the driver and secondary weapons operated by the rear passengers.

  • Cannon: the first option for the main weapon is the same cannon turret as seen in TBOGT. However, it behaves more like the tank gun of the Rhino Tank rather than an autocannon - one shot from the APC's regular turret can destroy most vehicles, but the cannon isn't as strong as the other tanks, having its explosive damage rated at 1000, which is the equivalent of two homing missiles in the blast radius (compared to the Rhino and TM-02 Khanjali, whose main weapons have a damage of 3000). It takes 1.5 seconds before firing another shell, and has a higher elevation range of between -20 and 40 degrees. The shells travel at the same speed as the Rhino's (380 m/s or 1368 km/h), and have a relatively short lifetime (0.5 seconds) and range (190 meters). It also has limited ammo capacity, as it can fire 50 shells before having to recall the APC through the Interaction Menu.
  • SAM Battery: the second option for the main weapon is a missile battery with six launchers, which has much more firepower and range (430 meters), but limited ammo, totaling about 60 rockets before having to recall the APC through the Interaction Menu. Despite being based on a SAM system, it is not actually anti-air and cannot lock-on on vehicles; instead, it behaves like six fast-firing unguided rocket launchers that deal the same damage as the RPG. The missiles are fired at 112.5 rounds per minute (able to deplete all ammo in roughly 30 seconds under continuous fire), and their projectile lifetime is two seconds before self-detonating, so they can travel at 215 m/s (774 km/h).
  • Machine Gun: Its secondary weapons are side machine gun turrets mounted within firing ports inside the vehicle, which provide excellent defensive capabilities against unarmored targets and have a high fire rate (500 rounds per minute), but have moderate damage and a relatively short range (100 meters). They also have a limited motion range of 90 degrees and a limited elevation range.
  • The vehicle has the option for installing Proximity Mines, which behave the same as any remote explosive and are operated by the driver. These mines are a bit stronger than their hand-held counterparts and are also limited to five active mines. Caution should be taken when using it, as it can potentially damage or destroy the vehicle.

Trailer[]

Towing an Anti-Aircraft Trailer in collaboration with another player gives the vehicle increased potential, as the trailer turret can provide additional defense when the main vehicle is suppressing enemies. Caution should be taken when carrying the AA trailer, as it is possible to trigger a proximity mine that the APC has placed, destroying the trailer, as well as lacking amphibious capabilities, limiting the APC's potential. The lack of armor often makes the trailer the first vehicle to lose during a combat.

  • The stock MG option usually gives general flexibility on light targets, as the APC's side machine guns give limited angle and may be a last resort weapon when the main gun runs out of ammo.
  • The SAM option gives good capabilities at taking out long-range aircraft, compensating the lack of range and homing capabilities of the APC's main guns. Having both vehicles with SAM batteries may help at sorting out aircraft and heavy vehicles at all ranges, but their limited ammo capacity would render them defenseless against larger threats.
  • The Flak Cannon option gives the vehicle a better way to defeat enemy heavy armor and again may be a last resort weapon when the main gun runs out of ammo. Their faster fire rate compared to the APC's cannon helps at suppressing an enemy quicker, but that means exposing the trailer directly to the enemy threat, especially other tanks and weaponized aircraft.

Trivia[]

Site-logo
This article needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of the GTA Wiki.
Notes: much of this is design/performance data that should be integrated

General[]

  • Despite its name, it acts much like an IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle). Usually, an IFV sacrifices troop capabilities in favor of more firepower, while an APC is a vehicle that carries an amount of people with generally no or low firepower.

The Ballad of Gay Tony[]

  • Although the APC is described on the official TBoGT website as an APC utilized by the NOOSE, neither NOOSE nor the LCPD actually use the APC in-game to chase the player, except during Frosting on the Cake or when there is an APC in the area and a police or NOOSE officer gets in the vehicle.
    • In said mission, the APC has a notable difference than the APC the player can drive. Instead of a turret that shoots explosive bullets, this APC has a minigun that sounds like an SMG.
  • The turret contains cursive texts saying "Liberty's Problems Solved".
  • The APC's horn is the same as the Firetruck's one (heard when an NPC uses it or if used with the sirens on).
  • Strangely, the vehicle has a normal car start sound, as opposed to a industrial truck start sound. Also, it features an alarm like a conventional vehicle, unlike most heavy vehicles.
  • Interestingly, the texture file for the APC (which is, rather oddly, textures of the entire vehicle due to the nature of the rough-style bodywork) is implemented into the engine, under the vents and engine cover flaps. This is similar to how the sticker-bomb textures are located inside the engine in the Asea in GTA V, as well as the racing textures for the stock cars in GTA V.
    • Due to the base color being part of the textures, when the APC is destroyed, there is no clear sight of missing textures or burnt bodywork, other than missing doors or wheels, similar to the Brickade. The fact that the LCPD calls it "a black APC" suggests that the vehicle's model is entirely black (similar to the case where most cars with textures are defined as "white vehicles").
  • The rearmost windows on the sides lead to nothing but a large gap that is connected to the opposite window.
  • Due to balancing purposes, the APC cannot be stored on any of the safehouse parking lot. The same applies to the Buzzard.
  • Even though it is considered to be a law enforcement vehicle, the player can pick up prostitutes and pay for their services.
  • Killing NPCs with the APC's turret lowers the Kills % in free aim statistic.
  • The only time one can activate the use of radio stations in the APC is in multiplayer mode. This also applies to other emergency vehicles in GTA IV and EFLC.
  • When used in GTA races, if the player uses Nitro, one can see that the flame comes from the lower points of the APC's vents, as if it had the exhaust system of a conventional vehicle.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

  • Unlike most turreted vehicles and the tanks, the APC has a different first-person view for the front, with the camera placed in front of the left window. The front gunner, on the other part, cannot switch to first person view.
  • The cannon turret has a slightly different firing sound when operated by a player, which sounds slightly less knocking than the Rhino Tank and the TM-02 Khanjali. However, in the perspective of another player (either other occupants of the vehicle or anyone near the same), all cannons share the same firing sound.
