{{Quote|60 tons of fun. A heavily-armored battle tank with a 1,500hp turbine engine and a 120mm cannon, the Rhino delivers a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. Much like its namesake, the Rhino is slow on the turn, surprisingly fast on the charge, and generally terrifying to anyone in the vicinity. One of the few vehicles still manufactured in America.   +
The Rhino Tank, also known as simply Rhino or Tank, is a military tank featured in both the 3D Universe and the HD Universe.

  +
Description
The Rhino is the name of an armored fighting vehicle appearing since Grand Theft Auto III, commonly referred to by players and police chatters simply as the Tank. The Rhino has subsequently appeared in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

  +
The Rhino appears as the successor of the Tank, the Tiger Tank and the Royal Pain from the 2D Universe games, remaining a large vehicle with limited mobility but with strong armor and devastating firepower thanks to its cannon. Like its predecessor in Grand Theft Auto 2, the Rhino appears when the player attains a six star Wanted Level, or upon entering Fort Zancudo in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. Law enforcement tends not to use the main cannon of the vehicle, except in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, in which the gun causes massive damage and usually kills the player.

Grand Theft Auto III — Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
Like its predecessor in Grand Theft Auto 2, the Rhino appears when the player attains a six star wanted rating. In all games, the Rhino can be avoided without much difficulty because of its slow speed and bad handling, but it's extremely deadly if the player attempts engaging one, and the soldier driving it always carries strong weapons. Also, when successfully stolen, authorities can bust the player due to the Rhino's slow speed. When it hits a vehicle, the vehicle most of the time explodes straight away; if not, it starts to burn instead, in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars however, this does not happen. Although the Rhino has a cannon it is never used by law enforcement, this however is changed in GTA Chinatown Wars as the Army will fire the cannon which causes massive damage to, and usually kills, the player. The Rhino is practically invincible to small arms fire and crashes; and only Satchel Charges, Dozens of other explosives and rockets and the Police Maverick's mounted gun can cause damage to it. Also, flame weapons (such as the molotov cocktails and flamethrower) can also be used to inflict damage. Note that it is also possible to destroy a tank with conventional ordnance, but it will take very long to destroy one. In GTA Liberty City Stories, if you can get the Rhino up and onto the tracks of the subway or the El-Train, the subway train or the El-Train will destroy the tank on impact.

  +
In Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Rhino does not appear to be directly based on any real-life military vehicle. However, its front end does bear some resemblance to that of the six-wheeled M93 Fox, and the sides belong to the design of the ERC 90 Sagaie, with a turret bearing resembling turrets found on the Panzer IV series of tanks. Its features also resemble the seemingly original and chunky design reminiscent of a modified M3 Stuart, but with a front that more closely resembles that of an M4 Sherman. The weapon configuration and chassis of the Rhino are similar to the equipment of the LAV-600. Contrary to most real-life tanks, the Rhino uses traditional wheels instead of dedicated tracks (likely due to technical limitations).

  +
The Rhino is depicted as a block-shaped vehicle with a truck-style, three-axle chassis, a narrow windshield and large doors on each side, along with the corresponding turret on top. In its original appearance in GTA III, the Rhino assumes a stark appearance with little detail on its armored body. The GTA Vice City rendition, however, saw the addition of a variety of equipment to the vehicle, as well as the enlargement of the barrel of the turret. The GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories renditions of the vehicle follow the design cues of the GTA III and GTA Vice City ones, with the turret barrel of the GTA Liberty City Stories rendition even being of the same size and length as that in GTA Vice City, although the GTA Vice City Stories one is even longer. The Rhino only spawns in a worn green color, which is actually a texture placed over the whole vehicle. The wheels are mostly covered by the side walls, but when destroyed they reveal to have the same design as the ones from most industrial vehicles.
In GTA: San Andreas and GTA: Liberty City Stories, it's possible to carjack a Rhino and even store one in a safehouse garage. Vice City Stories removes the ability to carjack the Rhino and unlike the other games where a Rhino spawn point is found, the tank is locked until a certain mission is completed (and even then the PS2 version of the game keeps the Rhino locked).

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Design
  +
In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the Rhino resembles an M1 Abrams and is much more realistic and larger than its predecessors, albeit using 12 traditional wheels instead of tracks (again due to technical limitations).
In GTA III, GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories, the Rhino does not appear to be based off of any real life military vehicle. However in the front, does bear ressemblance to the 6 wheeled M93 Fox reconassaince vehicle, while the sides belongs to Panhard ERC 90. However its features also resemble the seemingly original but chunky design reminiscent of a modified M3 Stuart, but with a front that more closely resembles that of an M4 Sherman. Because of it's heavy construction, with doors on both sides that can be easily damaged with even the slightest hit, and a truck-style 3-axle drivetrain with easily seen wheels, The turret can only be rotated by pressing buttons, which makes precise shooting almost impossible.

  +
The Rhino is depicted with a seemingly long and bulky hull, which features a circular hatch on the front that is used for the driver, and small vents on the rear where the engine is located, as well as a set of headlights and tail lights on both ends (though not programmed as actual lights). The turret is mounted almost in the center of the hull and has additional details, including dual hatches and quad smoke grenade launchers on each side. The Rhino is only available in a beige/desert color and uses a set of industrial wheels.
In its original appearance in GTA III, the Rhino assumes a stark appearance with little detail on its armored body. The GTA Vice City rendition, however, saw the addition of a variety of equipment to the vehicle, as well as the enlargement of the turret's barrel. While the GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories variants follow the design cues of the GTA III and GTA Vice City renditions, with the turret barrel of GTA Liberty Stories rendition even being of the same size and length as that in GTA Vice City, though the GTA Vice City Stories variant is even longer.

  +
The Lost and Damned
In GTA San Andreas, the Rhino looks like an M1 Abrams and it is much more realistic than its predecessors. It is colored beige (desert camouflage), has a normal tank entrance in front and a new drivetrain with smaller and more plentiful wheels, leading to even more of an increase in it's realism. It also has a new steering system, which finally allows the player to make very tight turns. The turret is operated with the mouse or right thumbstick (2), which allows the player to shoot directly at the target; however, this does mean the Rhino can no longer simply fire backwards to deter pursuit while the camera still faces forwards for steering. The Rhino in GTA San Andreas is also heavy enough to literally push aircraft, making a Rhino an ideal vehicle to push the destroyed Andromada from "Stowaway".<br />

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Interestingly enough, none of the pre-GTA IV versions have caterpillar tracks, unlike their real world counterparts; this is likely due to tracks being too complex for the game's engine to render. In one of GTA IV's DLCs, The Lost and Damned, the text files for a Rhino tank are included, even though it never appears in game.

  +
The Rhino makes a return in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and for the first time in the series, it makes use of tracks, like most real-life tanks. Like the GTA III rendition, the design of the vehicle does not resemble any real-life tank.

  +
The Rhino appears to have a seemingly narrower hull compared to previous renditions, but the tracks appear to give a higher ground clearance. While the vehicle does not seem to have a defined door, the player enters it like they would a normal car. The Rhino is only available in a green color with a white star emblem on the sides.
The Rhino does not appear in Grand Theft Auto IV; this is assumed to be because of Rockstar's goal of making GTA IV more realistic than previous games. However, it is replaced with the APC in The Ballad of Gay Tony and GTA Chinatown Wars reintroduces the Rhino with an appearance similar to the original Rhino. The GTA Chinatown Wars' Rhino bears the distinction of being the first Rhino to ever be depicted as having tracks.

The front of the hull features what look like spare track links, while the top area mounts various headlights on the edges, consisting of dual inner circular units and outer square-shaped units split between the upper main lights and lower turn indicators, together with circular high-beam units in the center. The area near the turret has what look like periscopes in the center intended for the driver, although there is an access hatch on the left that opens to reveal the driver seat. The sides have various armor plating that cover most of the tracks, while the rearmost section has rectangular vents, with the side ones acting as the exhausts. The rear end has larger vents on the edges and additional spare track links in the center, followed by a set of tail lights that consist of dual circular main units on the outer sides, square reverse units in the middle, and circular brake lights on the inner sides. The turret is very detailed and features numerous accessories, being ammo boxes, smoke grenade launchers on each side, and a sighting unit located beside the main cannon, while the top features two unusable hatches with additional periscopes. The vehicle only spawns in a desert camouflage livery with a rather worn appearance, with the files indicating it actually spawns in a white color.

As expected, the vehicle is equipped with a 120mm cannon apparently based on the Rheinmetall Rh-120 smoothbore tank gun (which is the standard armament of the real-life Leopard 2). Although not usable, there are two machine guns; one mounted beside the main gun and the other on the left turret hatch (which resembles an M2 Browning).

Grand Theft Auto III — Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
  +
Vehicle
  +
The Grand Theft Auto III rendition of the Rhino remained unchanged through the games it appeared in, being a large and heavy vehicle. A main disadvantage of this version is that its handling is pretty inferior compared to other heavy vehicles, as, even at low speeds, it has a wide turning radius. While its top speed is average, it has very low acceleration, mainly due to its rather huge mass. The slow speed and presence of doors on the sides makes the player easily vulnerable to being busted by law enforcers or being otherwise pulled out by any hostile pedestrian (especially when the doors are missing, since they are quite fragile). It has a working handbrake, but because of its wide turning radius and dual rear axles, it is difficult to tighten turns with it. The tank is quite bouncy, so its wheels easily lose contact with the ground. Its small ground clearance, bouncy suspension and low torque make this tank a poor choice when driving off-road, or even through small barriers. The Rhino has better handling in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, but otherwise functions the same as the Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City renditions.
  +
  +
Despite the limited performance, the Rhino has serious ramming capabilities; any vehicle hit will either explode instantly or end up burning instead. This makes the vehicle ideal for dealing with wanted levels, as most police vehicles have a tendency to hit the player's vehicle in an attempt to block their path.
  +
  +
The vehicle uses a diesel engine, a four-speed gearbox and an all-wheel-drive layout. It also uses the engine sound from trucks such as the Barracks OL, the Packer and the Linerunner.
  +
  +
Defense
  +
The Rhino is practically invincible to small arms fire and collisions; only explosives and the gun mounted on the Police Maverick can inflict damage. Additionally, flame weapons such as the Molotov cocktail and Flamethrower are able to damage the tank. Note that it is also possible to destroy a Rhino with conventional ordnance, but it takes a staggering amount and a long time to do so. In Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, if the player can get the Rhino up and onto the tracks of the subway, the incoming train cars will destroy the tank on impact. The tires of the Rhino are also bullet-proof, making them immune to small arms and spike strips. Only the windshield can be considered a weak spot, although this is only evident when confronting military-controlled Rhinos to hijack them.
  +
  +
Weaponry
  +
The Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret, which has devastating firepower against most vehicles. The turret is quite limited in traverse, only being able to rotate horizontally and with the use of additional buttons (making precise shooting almost impossible). However, this is mostly compensated by a very strong vertical auto-aim, which is very noticeable and a probable balancing factor against Police-controlled Mavericks (as they tend to fly out of the firing angles of the tank pretty easily).
  +
  +
Interestingly, the cannon can be used as a trick to reach high speeds; by rotating the turret towards the rear of the tank and starting to shoot, the generated recoil from the cannon will propel the tank forwards, and vice versa.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  +
Vehicle
  +
The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas rendition performs almost identically to the GTA III model, except it is much bulkier and heavier than before. It has somewhat better off-road abilities and better acceleration and grip, but it still cannot go through high obstacles. It handles better on road as well, thanks to its multiple wheels. This version also replaces the traditional handbrake with a steering mode in a similar fashion to the Monster, allowing it to make extra tight turns. Because of the more realistic access hatch, it is more difficult for the player to get busted.
  +
  +
Compared to the GTA III model, damage caused to other vehicles is determined by the amount of force actually used in the tank: slight touches only push other vehicles with minor damage, harder hits causes more damage to a vehicle or just ignite its engine, an even stronger strike will destroy the vehicle upon impact.
  +
  +
Again, the vehicle uses a diesel engine, a four-speed gearbox and an all-wheel-drive layout. It also uses the engine sound from trucks such as the Linerunner, the Tanker and the Roadtrain.
  +
  +
Defense
  +
The Rhino is bullet-proof and explosion-proof. Its weakness is colliding several times with destructible (such as the military-operated Rhinos) and indestructible objects (i.e. walls of all buildings) where it will eventually prompt it to smoke and eventually burn and explode like other vehicles. The tank can also be destroyed in the following ways: exposing it to fire damage, overturning it, or hitting it with a melee weapon multiple times. While driving the Rhino, one should be careful not to drive through the flames left behind by vehicles that have exploded, as these will set the Rhino on fire, doing massive damage and usually destroying it. The tires of the vehicle remain bullet-proof.
  +
  +
Weaponry
  +
Like the GTA III model, the Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret that works mostly identically. However, its destructive capabilities appear to be upgraded as well, as the turret can be aimed with the mouse (PC) or right thumb-stick (2), allowing for more precise shooting. The cannon can also be aimed upwards, ideal to shoot down aircraft such as the Police Maverick.
  +
  +
The player can still use the turret trick to accelerate. However, because of the camera controls, the player cannot see anything in front of them while the cannon is aimed rearward. A workaround is to switch to first-person view or cinematic view camera once the cannon is aimed rearward.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
  +
Vehicle
  +
Due to the introduction of treads in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Rhino appears to be much slower than in the 3D Universe, but gains a minor advantage in that it can turn while in a stationary position and is much controllable.
  +
  +
Defense
  +
The durability of the Rhino in the game, however, is turned down a notch, being more vulnerable to explosive damage than previous renditions; a pristine Rhino will begin burning as a whole after receiving seven direct hits from a Rocket Launcher or 3 shots from the turret of another Rhino. This can be noticed at higher wanted levels, as the Military will use their Rhinos at full potential, being a bigger threat to the player's tank, especially when being outnumbered by them. Because of its slow speed and presence of side doors, the player can be easily busted by a police officer, or any other lawman, so caution must be taken.
  +
  +
Weaponry
  +
The Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret that works similarly to the GTA III iteration, being limited in traverse and only being able to rotate horizontally. The shots will travel straight towards the edges of the screen or until it hits a land vehicle. Depending on the console, the cannon can be operated with the touch-screen functionality of the Nintendo DS, the Apple iOS and the Android OS, by pressing the tank icon and sliding the finger to whatever direction the player wants to shoot. On the Portable, this is done with the L1/R1 shoulder buttons.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto V and Online
  +
Vehicle
  +
The handling of the Rhino Tank, while not perfect, is fairly good. The tracks allow it to turn reasonably well, and it is quite fast for its size, as well as being adept at driving off road thanks to its traction, though its tracks can occasionally cause it to become stuck on solid objects. It also allows the Rhino Tank to pass over many small vehicles with ease, as well as pushing larger ones with almost no trouble. The hatch location is still an advantage, as the player cannot be busted easily, but this means it is much harder to hijack and even to enter.
  +
  +
The Rhino is stated to weigh 60 tons, which gives the vehicle the ability to crush various small-sized vehicles. Any vehicle struck under the track of the Rhino track are severely deformed and result either in an instant explosion or being set on fire, with the occupants also being set aflame. Interestingly, while the Cargobob struggles to lift certain trucks or armored vehicles with lighter mass, it has no apparent issues when lifting the Rhino Tank.
  +
  +
Based on the website description and handling files, the Rhino Tank weights 60 tons and features a 1,500HP Gas turbine#Tanks engine, powering the entire track system to move the vehicle at a maximum speed of 40.4 mph (65 km/h). It shares the same engine sound with trucks such as the Packer and the Phantom.
  +
  +
Defense
  +
While the Rhino remains as the most resistant vehicle, the vehicle is more vulnerable to various forms of attack. The tank can take about 3–4 tank shells, 5–6 RPG shots or 7–8 Grenade Launcher shots before exploding, making it an advantage to survive what is usually an instant kill. The armor appears to be more prominent on the front than on the rear, as attacking the back of the tank has a chance of opening the fuel tank, leaving a fuel trail behind the tank which can be ignited, immobilizing the tank after a few minutes (although the turret remains operational). When this happens, large amounts of smoke coming out the back engine and beeping are signs that the Rhino is losing power.
  +
  +
The blast radius of explosions will also cause damage to the tank, especially vehicles that are crushed by the tank itself, being a potential threat able to destroy it. The cannon of the tank is also dangerous when its shots explode very close to the hull of the tank, so the player has to avoid using the cannon in smaller areas (i.e. alleyways) for targets that are close to the tank (sometimes, the subsequent explosion will occur right next to the tank) or going directly to flammable places. The driver of the Rhino Tank is mostly safe from most forms of attacks, but will still get damaged by gunshots at very specific angles.
  +
  +
The Rhino in Grand Theft Auto Online has been made weaker over the course of several title updates so it only takes three Sticky Bombs, by either direct or nearby splash damage, 3000 Minigun rounds, or 3–4 RPG rounds to blow it up.
  +
  +
Weaponry
  +
Tank Cannon: like previous renditions, the vehicle is equipped with a 120mm cannon that functions similarly to the GTA San Andreas iteration, which offers an elevation range of between -15 to 30 degrees and has a fire rate of 1.5 seconds between shots. The cannon is very effective against most targets and has a fast projectile speed (380 m/s or 1368 km/h), able to hit fast-moving targets if timed correctly. It fires at a range of 190 meters/623 feet, and the projectile lasts for half a second before it explodes. The damage given by the cannon is 3000 according to the game files, which is equivalent to six homing missiles in the blast radius, able to destroy a player-driven Insurgent in five shells, but it inflicts the same damage as a regular explosive to other tanks (blowing up in four shells without armor upgrades). Unlike previous renditions, the main gun is a solid component, meaning that obstacles such as light poles, traffic lights and solid structures can interfere with the aiming of the tank, even having the risk of being stuck. However, it can be used as a way to clear out vehicles and NPCs away from the tank without firing the gun, thus avoiding the splash damage from the shell impact.
  +
  +
It should be noted that the firing angle of the shell is lower than what the main cannon can theoretically reach, evident by the cinematic cameras or while watching someone using the Rhino Tank in Grand Theft Auto Online. As of the Last Team Standing Update, the vehicle gains a turret camera view, which aligns the gun correctly.

In the Rhino, the player can perform Vigilante missions, which means catching and killing suspects. The Rhino is not necessarily the best vehicle to do this mission (especially not in games where the Hunter is available) because the player risks increasing his own wanted level at an accelerated rate due to the penchant of the tank for collateral damage. On the other hand, if the player cannot complete the missions with the other, comparatively flimsy police vehicles, the Rhino might be better. If the player can intercept the enemy vehicles, rather than chasing them, the player may be able to strike the targets with the tank instead of firing on them. This method cuts down on the wanted level the player receives, which may help them avoid having to fight the military on some occasions.

*The Rhino is most prominently featured in the heist The Paleto Score. The military will fly them in via Cargobobs and drop them off to use against Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. The Rhinos in this mission shoot slower than normal and miss more frequently. This is probably done for balancing purposes to give the player more of a chance of escaping them or fighting them off (obviously, a Dozer as the one used in the mission is too slow to dodge tank shots in normal gameplay).

  +
*Two spawn in eastern Area 69, in two large hangars near the airstrip where two Hydras spawn, after completing Black Project. Entering the base gives a five-star wanted level, though it should not be a problem to the player. One can drive a vehicle through a fence nearby, quickly get to the Rhino tank, and then enter it and escape through the same fence that they came through. One can also fly a plane very low and quickly bail out before the SAMs hit, jack the Rhino and escape through the same fence mentioned in the previous example.
  +
*Will spawn underneath the overpass going above the end of Grove Street after 100% completion is achieved.
  +
*Can be spawned using a cheat (see Cheats in GTA San Andreas page). (PC cheat: AIWPRTON or TIMETOKICKASS)
  +
*The military will pursue CJ at a six-star wanted level, sometimes using Rhinos. One can get it only if it was left by its driver. Provided that the player has enough health, this is relatively easy to achieve. All the player needs to do is exit their vehicle or approach an occupied Rhino on foot (or simply bring their vehicle to a complete stop without getting rammed by one), which will prompt the driver of the Rhino to get out. The player must then contend with the soldier's Carbine Rifle and enter the tank. Finally, they must get away fast enough before the soldier jumps on to the tank, opens the hatch and busts them.
  +
**It is far easier and safer to trap the Rhino between an obstacle, such as the entrance doorway in front of Wang's Used Car Show Room. Attract the attention of the Rhino driver, then lead it to the doorway, where it will be stuck, then quickly turn around, with a good gun, such as the MP5, AK-47 or the M-4, shoot at the driver's hatch. This will usually kill the driver beneath, causing him to flop out of the tank, making it a cinch to steal it afterwards.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
  +
*Spawns in Fort Staunton when 100% is achieved.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
  +
*Inside the Fort Baxter military base, it is there from the beginning of the game and locked until the mission Over the Top is done.
  +
*Driven by the army when the player gets a 6 star wanted level. As with the Rhino at Fort Baxter, they remain locked until the completion of Over the Top unless set on fire. Note: in the original PS2 version of the game, the Rhinos remain inaccessible, even after completing Over the Top, but in the double pack version, the Rhinos are almost always unlocked.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
  +
*Available for purchase from the auto merchant when the main story is complete, at $10000.
  +
*Can be found in a fenced-off warehouse area at the southern end of Francis International Airport; activates Fast Tracks. Players will warp outside a parked Rhino at the starting point regardless of whether or not the player completes or fails the mission (Note: To be used normally, the Rhino must be entered, before the player quits the side mission and reenter the Rhino quickly, or start a Vigilante or taxi mission and entering the Rhino). One should note there is always a civilian Patriot next to the tank, which possibly is meant to represent a Humvee.
  +
*Driven by military when the player gets a 6 star wanted level but they are always locked and thus cannot be obtained.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto V
  +
*Can be found at Fort Zancudo. The military will use Rhinos to shoot at the player once inside the base. These can be hijacked, but the only garage large enough to store it is an aircraft hangar. And getting one out of the base is relatively hard. By exploiting a glitch in the mission Fair Game (see entry for details), it is possible to obtain a Rhino from the Fort without danger and store it at Sandy Shores Airfield.
  +
*Can be purchased for $3,000,000 from Warstock Cache & Carry in single player. The Rhino will spawn in the protagonist's aircraft hangar.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto Online
  +
*Can be found at Fort Zancudo. The military will use Rhinos to shoot at the player once inside the base.
  +
*Can be purchased from Warstock Cache & Carry for $1,500,000.
  +
**The player can then call it in via Pegasus Lifestyle Management.
  +
**Prior to the Cunning Stunts: Special Vehicle Circuit update, the vehicle could only be purchased after reaching rank 70.
  +
**After The Diamond Casino & Resort update, upon reaching Rank 70, the player will still get a text message from Warstock saying the Rhino tank is available.

|Handling of this tank is terrible. Even at low speeds its turns are horribly wide. Unlike the normal tank it has very poor acceleration, when maximum speed is normal for this kind of tank. It has a working handbrake, but because of its wide turning radius and dual rear axles it is difficult to tighten turns with it. Tank is quite bouncy, so its wheels easily lose contact with ground. Its small ground clearance, bouncy suspension and low torque makes this tank very poor when driving off-road, or even through small barriers.

|This tank has 2 steering modes: normal allows it to make turns a little better than trucks, and extra, activated with handbrake button, allows to make extra tight turns. It has little better off-road abilities, but it is still far from perfect. It has better acceleration and grip, but it still cannot go through high obstacles. It handles better on road. The turret now points to where the player's camera is pointed, making it difficult to aim in some circumstances. It has no lights or sirens.

Trivia
In GTA III and GTA Vice City, the Rhino is bullet-proof and explosion-proof and as such it is immune to all weapons except the flamethrower and molotovs. In GTA San Andreas, the Rhino is still a tough vehicle, however, after colliding several times with other tanks, it will start smoking and explode. While driving the Rhino, one should be careful not to drive through the flames left behind by vehicles that have exploded, as these will set the Rhino on fire doing massive damage and usually destroying it. In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Rhino is immune to bullets but can still be destroyed by fire and about 10-15 hits from another Rhino's cannon or explosives.

General
  +
*The Rhino may have gotten its name from a World War II era German tank destroyer, the Nashorn, the name being German for 'rhinoceros'.

  +
3D Universe
Due to the introduction of treads for GTA Chinatown War's Rhino, the tank gains another a minor advantage in that it can turn while in a stationary position. The durability of the game's Rhino, however, is turned down a notch, being more vulnerable to explosive damage than previous renditions; a pristine Rhino will begin burning as a whole after receiving seven direct hits from a Rocket Launcher or another Rhino's turret.

  +
*In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, when the Rhino is viewed from afar, its low-detailed LOD model resembles the Grand Theft Auto III model of the same, though with a beige color.
  +
*Also in GTA San Andreas, the Rhino is set to perpetually spawn with a primary color of red, but this cannot actually be seen in the game, due to the set texture the tank has, unless the vehicle crashes/is crashed into and one pays attention to the red color of the crash particles.

**However, if the player drives the Rhino into the water they will have to open a hatch in order to escape which is realistic as most modern tanks have escape doors on their bottom.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online
In GTA Vice City, there is a mission in which the player has to steal a tank, Sir, Yes Sir!. Its doors are closed, so the player needs to wait until the driver hops out to buy some doughnuts, or kill the soldier on top of the tank. This tank has a self-destruct mechanism which the player must disable before it destroys the tank. In GTA Liberty City Stories, during the mission "Shogun Showdown", the Yakuza are storing weapons in a warehouse and along with that Toni Cipriani finds a Rhino which he later destroys by detonating it with a bomb. *The tank shells fired by the Rhino Tank reuse the projectile model of the Rocket Launcher.
  +
*Despite being a 1-seater, the Rhino Tank actually has two seats, as defined in the game, but the passenger seat is inaccessible. The seat, however, does not allow the player to control anything or fire from the vehicle.
  +
*When a Rhino Tank explodes, the normally unopenable hatch next to the gunner seat (which is also unopenable) will be blown off, which reveal a metal pole inside (possibly a ladder).

*There is a wrecked Rhino, along with several other wrecks, scattered directly east of Humane Labs and Research. This one is much larger than the drivable model (much like the Barracks Semi one, also much larger than the drivable version). Also, the hull hatch is basically a duplicate of the turret hatch (as it still features the gun mounting on it) as well as the left cabin from the drivable version.

Bugs/Glitches
In GTA: San Andreas and GTA: Liberty City Stories, the player can use the Rhino to complete the Vigilante side-mission. Given its near-indestructibility and ability to destroy vehicles on contact, it is considered the easiest vehicle with which to complete the mission, even taking into account its slow speed.

*In GTA III, the player is able to park the Rhino anywhere and it will stay in that exact spot without disappearing.
  +
*A glitch that involves one of the health cheats in GTA San Andreas creates a whole new axle dead center in the drive train. (Confirmed in the PS2 and PC version)
  +
*In GTA San Andreas, if one enables the "vehicle of death" cheat and engages a Rhino tank, the Rhino will explode while the player is unharmed.
  +
*Sometimes in GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories, when the player uses a cheat to spawn a Rhino while standing on the road, it will sometimes spawn on top of them and trap the protagonist inside the Rhino. The only way to get out the Rhino is to suicide or reload a save file, but no damage is dealt on the player.
  +
*In GTA San Andreas, if a player tries to steal a Rhino by shooting at the driver's hatch to kill the driver, there is an off-chance the dead driver will flop down between the tank, causing a texture clipping where the dead driver's body will clip through and become part of the tank. Since the game still thinks the driver is in the tank, it will become unstealable since there is no way to remove the dead body from the vehicle if stuck this way.
  +
**To avoid this, the player must kill the tank driver only when the Rhino is completely still, in this case the driver will fall out instantly. If the driver is killed while the Rhino is still moving, the player has only brief 3 seconds to force the Rhino to become still where the driver will fall out. Otherwise the Rhino will continue chase the player. Typically the game will spawn 3 Rhinos, 2 of them will get out and shoot the player while one of them will try to run the player over.

**This glitch also applies for Enforcer, FBI Rancher and free roaming police cars while having no wanted level.

For the tank in early games, see Tank.

60 tons of fun. Great for doomsday preppers.
Warstock Cache & Carry description.

The Rhino Tank, also known as simply Rhino or Tank, is a military tank featured in both the 3D Universe and the HD Universe.

Description

Design

Grand Theft Auto IIIGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

In Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Rhino does not appear to be directly based on any real-life military vehicle. However, its front end does bear some resemblance to that of the six-wheeled M93 Fox reconnaissance vehicle, and the sides belong to the design of the Panhard ERC 90, with a turret bearing resembling turrets found on the Panzer IV series of tanks.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the Rhino resembles an M1 Abrams and is much more realistic and larger than its predecessors, albeit using 12 traditional wheels instead of tracks (again due to technical limitations).

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

The Rhino makes a return in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and for the first time in the series, it makes use of tracks, like most real-life tanks. Like the GTA III rendition, the design of the vehicle does not resemble any real-life tank.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

The Rhino in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online resembles the German Leopard 2A4, the South African TTD prototype and the Japanese Type 90 tank.

As expected, the vehicle is equipped with a 120mm cannon apparently based on the Rheinmetall Rh-120 L/44 smoothbore tank gun (which is the standard armament of the real-life Leopard 2). Although not usable, there are two machine guns; one mounted beside the main gun and the other on the left turret hatch (which resembles an M2 Browning).

Performance

Grand Theft Auto IIIGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Vehicle

The vehicle uses a diesel engine, a four-speed gearbox and an all-wheel-drive layout. It also uses the engine sound from trucks such as the Barracks OL, the Packer and the Linerunner.

Defense

Weaponry

The Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret, which has devastating firepower against most vehicles. The turret is quite limited in traverse, only being able to rotate horizontally and with the use of additional buttons (making precise shooting almost impossible). However, this is mostly compensated by a very strong vertical auto-aim, which is very noticeable and a probable balancing factor against Police-controlled Mavericks (as they tend to fly out of the firing angles of the tank pretty easily).

Interestingly, the cannon can be used as a trick to reach high speeds; by rotating the turret towards the rear of the tank and starting to shoot, the generated recoil from the cannon will propel the tank forwards, and vice versa.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Vehicle

The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas rendition performs almost identically to the GTA III model, except it is much bulkier and heavier than before. It has somewhat better off-road abilities and better acceleration and grip, but it still cannot go through high obstacles. It handles better on road as well, thanks to its multiple wheels. This version also replaces the traditional handbrake with a steering mode in a similar fashion to the Monster, allowing it to make extra tight turns. Because of the more realistic access hatch, it is more difficult for the player to get busted.

Again, the vehicle uses a diesel engine, a four-speed gearbox and an all-wheel-drive layout. It also uses the engine sound from trucks such as the Linerunner, the Tanker and the Roadtrain.

Defense

Weaponry

Like the GTA III model, the Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret that works mostly identically. However, its destructive capabilities appear to be upgraded as well, as the turret can be aimed with the mouse (PC) or right thumb-stick (PlayStation 2), allowing for more precise shooting. The cannon can also be aimed upwards, ideal to shoot down aircraft such as the Police Maverick.

Vehicle

Due to the introduction of treads in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Rhino appears to be much slower than in the 3D Universe, but gains a minor advantage in that it can turn while in a stationary position and is much controllable.

Defense

Weaponry

The Rhino is equipped with a cannon turret that works similarly to the GTA III iteration, being limited in traverse and only being able to rotate horizontally. The shots will travel straight towards the edges of the screen or until it hits a land vehicle. Depending on the console, the cannon can be operated with the touch-screen functionality of the Nintendo DS, the Apple iOS and the Android OS, by pressing the tank icon and sliding the finger to whatever direction the player wants to shoot. On the PlayStation Portable, this is done with the L1/R1 shoulder buttons.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

Vehicle

The handling of the Rhino Tank, while not perfect, is fairly good. The tracks allow it to turn reasonably well, and it is quite fast for its size, as well as being adept at driving off road thanks to its traction, though its tracks can occasionally cause it to become stuck on solid objects. It also allows the Rhino Tank to pass over many small vehicles with ease, as well as pushing larger ones with almost no trouble. The hatch location is still an advantage, as the player cannot be busted easily, but this means it is much harder to hijack and even to enter.

Based on the website description and handling files, the Rhino Tank weights 60 tons and features a 1,500HP turbine engine, powering the entire track system to move the vehicle at a maximum speed of 40.4 mph (65 km/h). It shares the same engine sound with trucks such as the Packer and the Phantom.

Defense

The Rhino in Grand Theft Auto Online has been made weaker over the course of several title updates so it only takes three Sticky Bombs, by either direct or nearby splash damage, 3000 Minigun rounds, or 3–4 RPG rounds to blow it up.

Weaponry

Prominent Appearances in Missions

3D Universe

Grand Theft Auto III

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

  • Sir, Yes Sir! - Tommy must steal one from a military convoy before they reach their destination, then deliver it under a three-star wanted level. Once the tank is entered, a self-destruct countdown begins, with the tank exploding once the bar on-screen is full.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

HD Universe

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Grand Theft Auto V

  • The Rhino is most prominently featured in the heist The Paleto Score.
  • Several Rhinos also appear during the fourth Rampage, where the military use them to try to kill Trevor. In the enhanced version, the Rhinos cannot be hijacked.

Grand Theft Auto Online

Notable Owners

Locations

In all of its 3D Universe appearances, as well as its GTA Chinatown Wars appearance, the Rhino is called out once the player has reached a six-star wanted level, containing members of the army.

Grand Theft Auto III

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

  • Two spawn in eastern Area 69, in two large hangars near the airstrip where two Hydras spawn, after completing Black Project.
  • Will spawn underneath the overpass going above the end of Grove Street after 100% completion is achieved.
  • Can be spawned using a cheat (see Cheats in GTA San Andreas page). (PC cheat: AIWPRTON or TIMETOKICKASS)
  • The military will pursue CJ at a six-star wanted level, sometimes using Rhinos.
    • It is far easier and safer to trap the Rhino between an obstacle, such as the entrance doorway in front of Wang's Used Car Show Room.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

  • Inside the Fort Baxter military base, it is there from the beginning of the game and locked until the mission Over the Top is done.
  • Driven by the army when the player gets a 6 star wanted level.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

  • Available for purchase from the auto merchant when the main story is complete, at $10000.
  • Can be found in a fenced-off warehouse area at the southern end of Francis International Airport; activates Fast Tracks.
  • Driven by military when the player gets a 6 star wanted level but they are always locked and thus cannot be obtained.

Grand Theft Auto V

  • Can be found at Fort Zancudo.
  • Can be purchased for $3,000,000 from Warstock Cache & Carry in single player. The Rhino will spawn in the protagonist's aircraft hangar.

Trivia

Site-logo
This article needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of the GTA Wiki.
Notes: integrate and purge

General

  • The Rhino may have gotten its name from a World War II era German tank destroyer, the Nashorn, the name being German for 'rhinoceros'.

3D Universe

  • In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, when the Rhino is viewed from afar, its low-detailed LOD model resembles the Grand Theft Auto III model of the same, though with a beige color.
  • Also in GTA San Andreas, the Rhino is set to perpetually spawn with a primary color of red, but this cannot actually be seen in the game, due to the set texture the tank has, unless the vehicle crashes/is crashed into and one pays attention to the red color of the crash particles.
  • One of the artworks for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories depicts a Rhino with tracks.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

  • The player enters a Rhino like they would a normal car.
    • However, if the player drives the Rhino into the water they will have to open a hatch in order to escape which is realistic as most modern tanks have escape doors on their bottom.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • The stated 1500 horsepower turbine engine is likely a reference to the Honeywell AGT1500 turbine engine which also pushes 1500 horsepower, found in the M1A1 Abrams tanks.
  • The tank shells fired by the Rhino Tank reuse the projectile model of the Rocket Launcher.
  • Despite being a 1-seater, the Rhino Tank actually has two seats, as defined in the game, but the passenger seat is inaccessible. The seat, however, does not allow the player to control anything or fire from the vehicle.
  • When a Rhino Tank explodes, the normally unopenable hatch next to the gunner seat (which is also unopenable) will be blown off, which reveal a metal pole inside (possibly a ladder).
  • There is a wrecked Rhino, along with several other wrecks, scattered directly east of Humane Labs and Research. This one is much larger than the drivable model (much like the Barracks Semi one, also much larger than the drivable version). Also, the hull hatch is basically a duplicate of the turret hatch (as it still features the gun mounting on it) as well as the left cabin from the drivable version.

Bugs/Glitches

3D Universe

  • In GTA III, the player is able to park the Rhino anywhere and it will stay in that exact spot without disappearing.
  • A glitch that involves one of the health cheats in GTA San Andreas creates a whole new axle dead center in the drive train. (Confirmed in the PS2 and PC version)
  • In GTA San Andreas, if one enables the "vehicle of death" cheat and engages a Rhino tank, the Rhino will explode while the player is unharmed.
  • Sometimes in GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories, when the player uses a cheat to spawn a Rhino while standing on the road, it will sometimes spawn on top of them and trap the protagonist inside the Rhino. The only way to get out the Rhino is to suicide or reload a save file, but no damage is dealt on the player.
  • In GTA San Andreas, if a player tries to steal a Rhino by shooting at the driver's hatch to kill the driver, there is an off-chance the dead driver will flop down between the tank, causing a texture clipping where the dead driver's body will clip through and become part of the tank. Since the game still thinks the driver is in the tank, it will become unstealable since there is no way to remove the dead body from the vehicle if stuck this way.
    • To avoid this, the player must kill the tank driver only when the Rhino is completely still, in this case the driver will fall out instantly.
    • This glitch also applies for Enforcer, FBI Rancher and free roaming police cars while having no wanted level.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Grand Theft Auto V

  • Originally, the tank bought from Warstock Cache & Carry would lack extras such as the side panels, the turret hatches and the machine gun turret on top, which they were supposed to be removed only if the tank was destroyed. This was fixed in the San Andreas Flight School Update.
  • Originally, upon entering the vehicle, the turret would abruptly face the direction of the camera, which was noticeable if the player was looking behind while entering. This was fixed in the Last Team Standing Update.
  • Rarely, the treads of the Rhino Tank shows like they were popped like a car's wheel. However, since the Rhino can only reach a determined speed, this factor does not affect the vehicle negatively. This issue is seen often when exploding vehicles with the tank, evidenced when it catches fire.

Grand Theft Auto Online

  • If the player drives an Insurgent Pick-Up towards the turret of a Rhino Tank, both vehicles will be flung into mid-air.
