Trails is a graphics effect in all of the 3D Universe games starting with Grand Theft Auto III. The effect blended the last rendered frame on top of the newly rendered frame with transparency to create a sort of motion blur that would make car chases feel more action paced. It was a common technique used in Renderware powered games at the time and had nice results on Cathode Ray Tubes.
