Welcome to my Talk page.

Please refrain from swearing here, as I do not like bad language. I will censor messages containing profanities, and I may ignore, report and/or remove them, particularly if they are insulting.

Also, to keep this Talk page tidy, please remember to create a new heading for each new subject: if you do not, I will create a heading myself, based on the content of the message(s).

Finally, do not forget to sign your messages with either three (without timestamp) or four (with timestamp) tilde marks (~~~ or ~~~~), as I will generally be unable to reply to unsigned messages because I will not know who sent them.

Why italicating all "GTA" mentions is not possible via Bot[]

Hey man. I've been fiddling around with my bot today, and after considering what you said about asking it to italicate all cases of "GTA". Well, I've come to realise it just isn't possible because of how sensitive the bot really is. Take a look at this:

Bot-GTAEdits

This is a bot revision. In the bottom left of the Bot interface, you can see a list, which is created from "What Links Here/Grand Theft Auto V". As you can see, it has applied my settings (see below picture) to the first page in this list, and you can see the changes made, just like how you can review changes in the Wiki editor.

Here, I have asked the bot to ask MANY types of GTA Game titles; here's the list of changes (changing from (first column) to (second column).

Bot-GTAEdits2

In case you haven't noticed, what the bot is doing is overriding italicization; because I asked it to italicate "GTA V", it will find anything with "GTA V" in, grammatically, which means that it will find "GTA Vice City", and italicate the "GTA V" part, resulting in: GTA Vice City (source: ''GTA V''ice City). See? It will do this to literally anything, since it's sensitivity like that cannot be reduced - I really wished that I could limit it to finding only separate words wherein GTA Vice City wouldn't be counted - since "GTA V" is a separate word from "ice City", unfortunately it doesn't look possible. I'll look into it more.

Of course, there is the option of solely limiting it to italicize "GTA Vice City", and then going through all of GTA V pages and italicizing the "GTA V" bits, but it would still cause the same issue. It seems that it cannot ignore wikitext around current words either (i.e., if something reads ''GTA Vice City'', it will still attempt to italize it, resulting in ''''GTA Vice City'''').

It also applies to GTA III, since I asked it to find "GTA I" and "GTA II" (GTA 1 and GTA 2- there are some cases where they are written like that), so it finding "GTA III" would cause it to change "GTA III" to: ''''GTA I'' I'' I''.

I'll do more research into it later on, but I hope you can understand why exactly this doesn't work. Monk Talk 16:38, June 12, 2016 (UTC)

No. WildBrick has already stated that he doesn't know much about programming, as with Rain - the bot doesn't require coding at all, nor programming. It's basic instructions, unfortunately not advanced enough to avoid this issue.
And no. I cannot get it to italicise these headings either; the "error" still applies with games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V, in that it will still apply the same mistake to them. Monk Talk 18:40, June 14, 2016 (UTC)

RE: Image[]

I've renamed it as best I can think of. I can see why it confused you, it took me a few minutes to think of a name for it. I don't think we've had an image like that before. Sam Talk 16:27, June 14, 2016 (UTC)

If it can confuse us then I think it would be unfair to issue a reminder to him for breaching the policy. I think the Media Policy needs to be amended to include non-canon images such as that, to prevent something like this in future. Sam Talk 16:44, June 14, 2016 (UTC)

RE:Regarding the Playstation 4[]

Theres no "Select" button anymore, only the "Start" button, the "Home" button (that opens the Playstation main manu) and the "Share" button. Normally, functions that used to belong to the "Select" are now activated by pressing the controller's touch pad, that can also work as a button. - DLVIII Talk 02:15, June 18, 2016 (UTC)

RE: Buckingham article[]

Hello Konan.

Well, assuming that leaving the real life basis field empty will mislead to an idea that "the vehicle is not based on any known vehicle" (even though it was mentioned on the base model, like the Valkyrie) and given that the Valkyrie MOD.0 has nothing and the SuperVolito Carbon has the real life basis mentioned, I simply edited the page to bring it back, thinking it was a mere mistake.

Honestly, Konan, I hate these inconsistencies and the fact that I am saying "It should be like that" and another one saying "No. Like that", and so on, so I am either upset or uninterested in correct these inconsistencies again. If Monk want that idea like that, fine, I am not gonna say anything, but please, do not make things more confusing as it was before.

Also, I hate that I cannot defend my position without someone answering it (assuming that, if a message goes on my talk page, I should at least answer to that message to solve any current question or issue), therefore making my responses almost useless. Sometimes, I think I would not respond to anything anymore.

Anyway. Sorry for any inconvenience and I hope you understand the issue regarding the edit on the Buckingham page. Body Armor Android SWAT Cam F Torpedo Android Dispatch Data Files 02:58, June 21, 2016 (UTC)

Cam, you can't simply go AWOL just because someone says that something needs to be done in an opposite manner to what you did. It isn't hate, it isn't meant to offend you, the only reason I did it is because, as I said, it's pretty pointless. If you're going to go AWOL over things like this, it doesn't help. You need to accept that sometimes you won't always make the right decisions choices that necessarily make the best reading, hence, someone will help you, I'm trying to helo you. I won't bother next time if you're just going to keep leaving like this. Monk Talk 06:09, June 21, 2016 (UTC)

Officer Pulaski calls the journalist a "stoolie", which is a betrayer or snitch; and as the "journalist" is only referred to as the "Target" in the mission objectives, it is likely he is some sort of snitch. Danyan1429 (talk) 19:10, July 17, 2016 (UTC)

RE: Links[]

Hi Konan. My own view of "overlinking" is the same as Wikipedia's. Their MoS states that a link if possible should appear once after the lead section (i.e. once in the lead and once again in the main section) though repeated links in places like infoboxes are ok. The reason I share this view is because in my opinion articles with excessive links (especially repeated ones) can become cluttered, especially if they're linked ambigiously (e.g. Tommy instead of Tommy Vercetti). This is just my opinion and is not the Wiki policy, and I don't go out specifically looking for overlinks, just removing them if I find them. I hope that makes sense. RE: Two Questions[]

First question: I didn't realise it was like that on all of the pages, I thought it was just an error, you can add it back.

Second question: I'm not sure, I assumed it was just all admins but the new template could have made it just b'crats. Monk is active a lot though so if it is always him on it then that would possibly be why.

Good news[]

I have some excellent news. After getting a lot of help from Community Central users, I have been able to force the bot to do the job properly; italicating only what I tell it to, and italicating only unitalicated text. For instance, telling it to italicate GTA I originally would have caused it to italicate GTA II, and GTA III. Now, it will only italicate GTA I (complex regex code prevents it from italicating the others). Also, if the text has italicates already, or any code around it (links [[ ]], tags < />, template brackets { }), it will not italicate it. Monk Talk 09:39, July 20, 2016 (UTC)

See the history of this page to see that it worked. Also, can you provide/develop a list of everything you want it to italicate? i.e. every variation of GTA game titles. :) Monk Talk 09:40, July 20, 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately there's bad news. It works, that's that, and yes, I can italicate links, however, now I have a problem: I can give the bot 1 page to work on, and it will find all words not italicated, and italicate them, however, if I give it two pages in the list to work from, two or more, it will not find anything. It's really strange. I put loads of GTA titles (unitalicated) on the Drift Tampa for it to work from, it worked, but when I put another article in the list, it didn't find the unitalicated text and thus didn't italicate anything. Really can't understand it. Monk Talk 10:34, July 20, 2016 (UTC)
With pleasure; I'd love to show you sometime. Monk Talk 10:44, July 20, 2016 (UTC)

RE: User page header and resignation[]

Good day, Konan.

I have noticed the error you pointed out and I would like to correct it. However, as you can figure out (and figured out by myself), my user page was, for security purposes, locked when I was formerly an Administrator of the wiki, and therefore I cannot do such correction. You may wish to either: unlock the page to gain the permission to edit there or correct said text for me (I think I pointed out any staff member can correct any mistake on my page).

As for me, it is okay. I simply was utterly stressed and all those discussions and mistakes on the past days just gave me more stress than ever, hence my decision to resign. Given that now I am fine, I will probably resume my activity, although not as often as before.

Thanks. --Body Armor Android SWAT Cam F Torpedo Android Dispatch Data Files 02:13, July 23, 2016 (UTC)

Oh, I completely forgot about that, that was ages ago, wow! As it turns out, no, there are no LOD models of the cars, it was speculation as well, which I sadly believed... nevertheless, over time I found out the real leftovers of these cars - there are GXT lines regarding them (the names that would show up when you enter them) and there are handling lines. One of these LCS Beta Cars, the Tommy (Vehicle), also has a model found in the Mobile version. The other one is a bloodied version of the GTA3 Mafia Sentinel. No GXT lines yet, but I found these in the respective files of the mobile version. These cars are named like real life ones, but that even applies to existing LCS cars, such as the V8 Ghost being named "spider" or the Hellenbach GT is named "pontiac". While this isn't immediately breaching any policy, it is slightly concerning me that you are taking up to 10 revisions in a row to get an edit right - take a little more care and time in your first edit and fewer corrections will have to be made consequently...It's a little frustrating, especially when I see an entirely different mistake to fix, and upon fixing it, you have since corrected your own revision for the third time, corrupting my edit. Just a friendly warning. Monk Talk 14:38, September 30, 2016 (UTC)

PS I replied to your message on my talk page. Monk Talk 14:38, September 30, 2016 (UTC)

Would you like Discussions enabled on the GTA Wiki?[]

Hey TAlim 1994,

I'm contacting you and the other admins to see if you are aware of Discussions, Fandom's new social feature? It adds a conversation platform to a wiki where users can talk about anything and everything related to the wiki's topic. What makes it different from the current forums you can enable through Special:WikiFeatures is that it works equally well on mobile and desktop, and that it can be a central part of your community's app.

Fandom plans to eventually retire the current forums and migrate all of their content into Discussions, making Discussions the primary conversation space on wikis. However, since you're using wiki-style forums on the GTA Wiki instead of Fandom's forum feature, Discussions would be a new addition for your community, not a replacement.

Do you think this is something you'd like to try? It would give your app users and mobile visitors a way to get involved in the community, talk and contribute, which they haven't been able to do before. Some of them may even turn from read-only visitors to active editors. Desktop users would have a way to discuss GTA from anywhere they go - they could take it with them on their phones. And, since you're not using the forums, you wouldn't have to worry about any current features you love disappearing, or any content on the actual wiki changing.

If you're still unsure about this, you can also check out the Discussions FAQ. You'll find many answers to questions there that other communities have asked us already. Feel free to check out how Discussions is working out for other communities, for example Fallout, Brave Frontier, or Destiny.

All you need to do if you'd like to have Discussions enabled is to let me know, and I'll do that for you. I'm here if you have questions, too! Mira Laime  (help forum | blog) 21:33, October 3, 2016 (UTC)

New information[]

Hello sir. I have new information to add to the wiki and i'd like the whole community to look at it and vote on the validity of my information. This is a special case here since it involves the mural and that after 3 years , we all seen a thousands of explanation for the mural itself , but nobody actually took the time to do a complete analysis of the mural. This analysis took me 3 months to complete , and it ended up on the mural being completely deciphered. All the 18 elements contained in it. Off course since we are dealing with abstract art and symbolism , a lot of my ressearch end up being my own interpretation .

During the analysis though , i took the time to place litterally all possible interpretation ( i would usually drop the modern context since nothing in the mural suggested a modern symbolism ) and i also found out many in-game clues and references that are not refutable at all.

This obviously take many hours to read. I'd just wish for my analysis to be looked at by competent people who know everything about GTA. So again the only thing i ask you is to actually READ THE WHOLE THING. There's an order for the information too , missing only 1 paragraph makes you lose the essence of the analysis.

Here's my ressearch : Mount Chiliad Mural complete analysis

https://www.reddit.com/r/chiliadmystery/comments/558j9a/mount_chiliad_mural_complete_analysis_and/ -

Visual support : http://imgur.com/idAhdKQ

This is the visual support for my analysis. In the same imgur post you will also find a re-written version of the main story using this wikia for my main sources of information. My version is seamless and also written in an Classical Hollywood Script template to expose to everyone how the main story was actually made using those exact systems and codes. This is a parody of Hollywood after all , It makes complete sense that the main story itself would be written using the exact same codes promoted by Hollywood for several decades.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GameWritingLab/comments/55i8zp/is_gtav_main_story_written_like_a_hollywood_movie/

In any case , i am willing to go through any verification process for my information and i can also participate in elaborating a good format to display all this information. I am also in talk with other wikia around the internet and with journalists too for the record , i really take this seriously :).

Have fun reading ! (P.S.: my main language is french , sorry for my bad english )

RE:[]

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. Plus, GTA Online is usually chaotic with too many players causing more trouble whilst I was trying to get into an empty session (private sessions won't do since the game demands that CEO and MC work are for public sessions), particularly hackers running rampant on the PC which makes it difficult for me to earn money for more pricey vehicles and bikes. JohnSignature 06:25, October 27, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah. I tried getting to near-empty lobbies, though its by sheer luck since the game often redirects me to the same, chaotic sessions I didn't want. I'd need sheer luck by seeing loads of players being disconnected en masse leaving me by myself. I even tried with NetLimiter which is highly efficient but it soon expired on me leaving me to rely on sheer luck in hoping everyone gets disconnected (even tried finding Google to no avail). And believe me, I really refuse to spend on cash cards just to keep my in-game money going. I'll still try your methods but for now, I need to lay off of GTA V for the night and rest up and see if luck is on my side, including your said method. JohnSignature 07:33, October 27, 2016 (UTC)

Your edits[]

Could you please try not to make so many different edits in the same page at the same time? I don't understand why don't you just make ONE edit that includes all your changes, instead of five or six separate minor edits to the same page. It disrupts the Recent Wiki Activity because sometimes all the recent edits are yours but only a few articles have been edited, and the rest are quickly "buried". Anyway, either you or Sam should go for Bureaucrat. You're both equally capable. Monk Talk 18:10, February 8, 2017 (UTC)

Background[]

You'll be happy to hear I have fixed the background scrolling issue. Monk Talk 17:56, February 15, 2017 (UTC)

Basically it needed this code:
.WikiaSiteWrapper {
    background-size: cover;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-attachment: fixed;
    background-position: center;
}

The fixed attachment stops it scrolling. I then centered that, stopped it from repeating (hopefully no one is using this or this monitor, and covered it across to avoid any background color showing. Monk Talk 18:14, February 15, 2017 (UTC)

On the vertical one you'll see dark gray (same color as the wiki's page background) stuff at the top and bottom of the screen, accounting for the monitor-size minus the ratio of the background (around 16:9), basically the picture won't stretch so it'll put the picture in the center of the screen and fill the dark gray around it. On the landscape one, the picture won't fill the entire screen so there'll probably be gray bits at the side. Basically anything that is drastically over or under 16:9 probably won't work as well. Monk Talk 18:27, February 15, 2017 (UTC)
MediaWiki:Wikia.css and MediaWiki:Common.css are the places to go for code. Wikia.css applies to the Oasis skin, while Common.css applies to all skins. Common typically doesn't work with certain things, most specific components (tabbers, tables, etc) go in Wikia.css.
Annnnd that was a mistake. Monk Talk 18:38, February 15, 2017 (UTC)

Hi Konan. Yes, of course I remember you. Congrats on becoming staff during my absence.

While I do miss the added tools of an Admin (and the ability to deal with vandals myself), I have not decided yet whether I want to participate at that level again. I know my foibles well and know I would struggle to curb my involvement to avoid burnout. I'm getting very intolerant in my middle-age, the "my way or the highway" criticism leveled at me in my absence is valid and hard for me to remedy. It takes more effort to be collaborative than I may be willing to devote at this time. While I have been "moderating" on the internet for nearly 20 years, I am now far less accepting of trolling than I used to be. :) Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 03:27, February 23, 2017 (UTC)

References template[]

I'm busy playing at the moment. Quick look: It uses a CSS class to make it small and that probably isn't defined in GTAwiki's CSS. class="references-small". Check the Harry Potter wiki's MediaWiki:Wikia.css and compare it to ours. You should have edit rights to the css and can just copy & paste. If you run into difficulties, Wildbrick will be your guy. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 10:20, March 28, 2017 (UTC)

HP wiki put most of their CSS in their MediaWiki:Common.css. That way it should work for both the wikia skin and Monobook. .references-small { font-size: 0.85em; } is what you should see there. Should be no harm adding it to the same place here. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 10:59, March 28, 2017 (UTC)

Re:Trivial question[]

This current account was created 2015-07-13 as a "test" account (named Smurf the Troublemaker) similar to McJeff's many minor test accounts (Jeff the Vandal etc). If you check my userpage history you will see I created page with "This is smurfynz's standard user account used for testing rights and blockings." It was handy to make sure users could not edit locked pages and the intention was to let new admins test their "block tools" on it (although that never happened). Openness and transparency in the creation of the secondary account excuse any allegations of sockpuppetry. :)
It was never intended as an editor account though.
When I left voluntarily in August 2015, I had Wikia disable my "main" account globally but I did not disable this Troublemaker account.
When I decided to return to editing I did briefly consider asking to re-enable my old account but decided against it, not least of all because I wanted to try to start afresh with a more collaborative attitude. If I hadn't had this old account to resurrect, I would have just created a brand new one, rather than getting this one renamed to something a little friendlier. Question regarding template[]

Hello Talim,

I trying to copy the Template:Portal/Component/Slider onto my wiki. This is the result: http://cleansandbox.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Portal/Component/Slider. It appears broken and doesn't work at all, and I think it has to do with wrong MediaWiki. If you have time, could you take a look at what's wrong? I'm asking for your help because you are the last one that edited the template, and I assume that means you know how it works.

To be honest, hardly any of us are aware of how this template works on this wiki, as it uses very old and outdated code that no one uses. this guy was the one who created it, but he hasn't been active in almost 4 years. You could give him a try. Monk Talk 16:09, April 27, 2017 (UTC)

Hey Talim. The title is because I am a member of the Community Council which is a group of select users from various wikis who Wikia consults on new features that are to be added. I was just randomly asked back in April by a Wikia staff member if I wanted to be a part of it and I said yeah. I assume you just have to be asked but there may be some way to request to join it. If you look at the history of our reflist template, Dodo8 originally had the group code in there from 2013, Rain removed it in May 2015, if I remember correctly there was a wikia-wide bug that made it fail. As for how #tag works, look at Help:Magic Words example. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 10:10, October 5, 2017 (UTC)

Redirects Part II[]

Follow the link trail in Part I and you'll get to my direct quote from Fandom redirect help. This is not a new concept. Wikitext in and of itself already compensates for may reasons for superfluous redirects (plurals being a ready example). Also, and I think you may have used this quote before too, Wikia (Fandom) is not Wikipedia. We don't have to follow their rules any more than they have to follow ours. Redirect pages should be created for alternative titles for articles. Title case vs sentence case or singular vs plural are not valid alternate titles. Redirect pages should not be created just to allow "lazy" links. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 09:19, October 7, 2017 (UTC)

Mechanics[]

I decided to make a See also: template for all the GTAV/Online mechanics so we only have to update in one place. Each one is in an IF function so they won't display their own entry on their own page. So I also deliberately removed ALL the game title links as there is no guarantee they will be the first link in the section. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 03:03, October 19, 2017 (UTC)

Fighter planes done and tested. Feel free to add it to the others (or tweak any formatting first if you want).

And yeah, glad the coalition talks are over, just so the media can stop harping on about how long it takes. Most of the people I know were patiently waiting but the media try to whip up a frenzy of public opinion to try to force them to hurry it along. Just stick to reporting what is happening guys, stop trying to make stuff happen /rant.

I'm in the demographic that normally votes for our conservative right-leaning party (National) i.e. over 40, high income earner, but I'm a bit of a lefty from way back (ex-unionist) so I'm happy with the outcome. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 07:56, October 19, 2017 (UTC)

I was thinking of adding the nested IF for the game title formatting but wasn't convinced the ordering was 100% right yet (alphabetical didn't look right so I went with some sort of logical grouping). But that change will certainly work. nb - if you edit each page containing the template but change nothing and just publish, it will update the template content and not be recorded as an edit. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 08:43, October 19, 2017 (UTC)
I'm happy with my logical grouping if you are. I did not include any other mechanics from other titles as it would then stop being a see also list and turn into a replica of the Mechanic disambiguation page which I think is just unnecessary to have on every page. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 09:10, October 19, 2017 (UTC)
I don't agree with duplicate purpose templates. For that reason, I've moved the template to Template:SeeAlsoShortcuts. For each long-listed See Also, you can create an additional section within the template as it works with a switch. Then, simply list the name of that section. This avoids having to create new templates for each encounter. As much as it means users won't be able to search for them easily, I don't really think they'll be that bothered. It's only one section, and they can work out how it works relatively simply - just might require some assistance if they want to create their own, which I'm going to document shortly. Monk Talk 18:52, October 19, 2017 (UTC)

See Also Templates[]

We don't need two different templates for different longer lists of related articles - I've merged them, so it just requires a paramater. It works the same as before, but we don't need loads of templates for this sort of thing. I recommend you take a look and try it yourself. I will get the bot to update pages. :) Monk Talk 18:44, October 19, 2017 (UTC)

Khanjali[]

Interestingly enough, the Railgun for the Khanjali is seemingly useless. I've seen videos about the Railgun compared to the regular cannon, and the only difference is its range - which is little more than a truck-length further, so it's not very effective at all. Having checked the files for both cannons, every single piece of data between them is completely identical, with the exception of the ammo type [AMMO_KHANJALI_CANNON_HEAVY], the audio hash [AUDIO_ITEM_XM_VEHICLE_KHANJALI_CANNON_HEAVY], the flash effect [muz_xm_khanjali_railgun] the name, the stat name [HCANN) the addition of a recharge flag [VehicleChargedLaunch] (the effects it produces when recharging I presume), and two other stats: a "kickback impulse", which is increased from 0.8, to 1.0 [<KickbackImpulse value="1.000000" />], and a "kickback amplitude", which is decreased from 0.0005, to 0. [<KickbackAmplitude value="0.000000" />]. I can't really see what else could be causing the differences. I'll have to dig deeper and see if anything else might be getting involved. Re 2 Questions[]

UK>US Redirects[]

That's a tricky one. My initial response is definitely no, that's not what redirects are for, no-one should be spelling it with an "s" within pages as it is used as a proper noun and the page is spelled as it appears in game with a "z"... however mediawiki doesn't seem to be that good at compensating for that particular issue. A good test I use is to search, both inside Wikia/Fandom and externally using Google with a "site" parameter to see if the "mis-spelling" will get the reader to the right page without a redirect. Now for Organisation, within site search, auto-complete will work as soon as you type Orga and prompt you to search for Organization but if you overtype the suggestion with the English spelling instead of the American (or have copy>pasted into the search), then surprisingly Organizations is not the first result in the search result... which to me would indicate a redirect page would be OK.

GTA Wiki: To-Do List[]

Hi Konan. I have recently being working on something that may interest you; having noticed that the To-Do List has been abandoned for over a year and was severely out of date, I decided to revamp it, and made it significantly easier to update, making everything template-based, and organizing the lists into expandable sections.

To keep it up to date, I have actually being going through the Stub, Section Stub, Images Needed and Unsourced information categories, and adding what it necessary to the relevant sections. A new template, Template:To-do, allows you to create a new row within the table, rather than coding the table itself, and thus you are able to fill in the information in template parameters and fields, making it much easier to maintain. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 16:32, December 18, 2018 (UTC)

Perhaps it would be better to keep these characters on the main article, The Gamechangers, under a cast section, rather than have individual articles for them, seeing as they are indeed almost completely empty and untouched. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 16:58, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
Admittedly, I had no idea there were so many either, hence I suggested simply keeping that article for the sake of it existing...but since they are all basically in the same condition, perhaps just move the titles and basic descriptions, if there actually is any, to a "Cast" header on The Gamechangers, and then delete the individual character articles. We can always recreate these articles if the information within the Cast section becomes overcrowded to the point they do need their own articles. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 17:15, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
I can certainly try. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 17:34, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
The most fleshed out articles seem to be the most significant ones in terms of the GTA series in general, rather than the TV show, i.e., Jack Thompson, Dan and Sam Houser, so they can stay. Any others that are only to do with the film itself can go. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 17:47, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
I have already completed it. I have moved the film pictures to the cast section. The real-life pictures can stay on their respective real-life actor page. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 17:52, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
Well, since we currently don't have much information about the less significant characters (who are actual people), they can remain on the cast list until someone is dedicated enough to research about them, if they can, and then an article can be made for them. Until then, we just have to work with what we have really. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 17:56, December 18, 2018 (UTC)
I didn't, perhaps I could get the bot to do that. Monk (Bureaucrat Bureaucrat) Talk 19:29, December 18, 2018 (UTC)

Hey Konan, no I don't play RDRII but my son does. As per the Bounty Target information, when originally available, the RDRII unlock was from the 25 melee Kills Challenge, not just completing the bounties and collecting the weapon in GTA Online. I don't know if that particular challenge/unlock still applies if done after RDRII was released. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 04:51, January 5, 2019 (UTC)

Wrong on both counts. The ImageDeleted template DOES provide a "deletion statement" template field which we can make as friendly or as strict as we like. In this case, given the editor's propensity for attempted wikilawyering in his edit summaries and his warning/block history on other wikis, I felt the strict approach was necessary. Your removal of my message and replacing with the softly-softly approach completely undermined me. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 01:59, January 8, 2019 (UTC)

The above messages were the result of a misunderstanding caused by a technical issue. TAlim 1994 - Konan T-A Lim 林道安 (talk | contributions) 03:08, January 8, 2019 (UTC)

Well, since I'm the only staff member who has ever used ImageDeleted despite Monk's request for all to use it, I think I'm probably best qualified to instruct on how and when it can be used. If the images are worthwhile and are valid candidates to be renamed/licenced to comply, then the ImageLicence reminder template is 100% appropriate to issue. However, if the images are completely worthless, duplicates and/or violate more than just the media policy (i.e. Modded content, non GTA content) then it is appropriate to delete them and issue the ImageDeleted message. You can use WhatLinksHere to see how and when it has been used. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 02:46, January 8, 2019 (UTC)
This time I had already issued {{ImageLicence}} to the user 2 days ago, because when he uploaded it, he also edited the page and I (wrongly) assumed he had added his image in the infobox. I did not notice because the existing image in the infobox was almost (but not quite) identical to his new image. Hence it passed my "useful image belongs on a page test" and he got the 'reminder' treatment, not the 'delete' one. I just re-deleted with the correct reason - duplicated image. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 10:44, January 11, 2019 (UTC)

ImageDeleted Template changes[]

Sorry Konan, got caught up in some user discipline issues and forgot to come back to this. A default "media policy violation" message is not appropriate because images can be required to be deleted for many reasons other than just the media policy. It may be a Fandom ToU violation (even though not necessarily "obscene" in the context of GTA series), spam, irrelevant content etc. Whilst the subsequent sentence does still specify the media policy I feel that can still be an appropriate reminder as part of the template and the free format deletion statement can then be used to further explain the other policies violated.  Given it is only Administrators and Bureaucrats using this template, they should be capable of entering the required parameter(s) without superfluous hand-holding needing to be built into the code for what should only need to be a simple template. Again, having used it extensively since it was implemented, I've never had an issue wording the parameters to fit the circumstances of the deletion. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 08:08, January 13, 2019 (UTC)

Fine, put your default message in there then. I'll continue to use it the way I've used it to date, and if anyone else gets around to using it they can have the choice. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 09:10, January 13, 2019 (UTC)

Dummy edits[]

Not for the first time, I think we need to have a chat about your excessively repetitive edits to pages, including your really bad habit of making "dummy edits" just for the sake of correcting irrelevant typos in previous edit summaries. That really has to stop. The multiple edits are especially irritating when you've done it on user talk pages resulting in an influx of spammed emails notifying of "new messages" when in actual fact it has just been you taking multiple edits to make one comment. Nobody is immune to making typos or (in my case, dyslexic) errors, but that's what the Preview function is for. You've apologised for it previously, but nothing seems to have changed. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 03:00, January 24, 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Konan. Obviously this situation wouldn't warrant a block of a staff member, but thanks for offering :)
There are many situations (particularly with template edits) where multiple edits are required to update and rollback attempted changes, but that's not what we've been talking about here and in the previous 3 occasions.
Large article spaces with substantive revisions in progress are a situation where multiple edits can be justified, and I'm sure we all do that to save our progress and avoid potential edit conflicts on high-traffic pages, so I doubt any of us have an issue with that. I have a couple of exceptions where I actually do the edits offline in Notepad++ to avoid those sort of conflicts or multi-edits.
For User Talk pages, I think there's a trade-off you need to make between the perceived professionalism of presentation of a mistake-free message to another editor, and the perceived amateurishness of them seeing you, as a wiki staff member, take 5 or 6 attempts to write that one message to them. By all means, when replying or continuing a conversation, take the opportunity to go back and correct minor errors from earlier in the conversation if you notice them (provided the meaning isn't changed), but having the odd typo in what should be a more informal communication does not reflect badly upon you or the staff in general, unless the meaning is made unclear by said mistake.
The recent example of the avoidance of edit-conflict on the Grand Theft Auto V article, where the 2 videos were supposedly missing, and where I had recently reverted the re-upload of those videos using different filenames, was actually still under action by me after the user messaged me about it. I had noticed the issue (and also the more prevalent issue with nearly all the videos on the Grand Theft Auto IV/Videos page) and was investigating whether the videos had been subject of a Youtube takedown notice and was sure (as you had discovered) the official R* channel videos were already available elsewhere on the Wiki. There was also some thought that the move to Fandom domain may have broken some links depending on the wikitext used to embed the videos. I'm still looking into that. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 04:50, January 24, 2019 (UTC)
Sean has explained it well already, but I just wanted to point out he's not the only staff member concerned about this, as Monk and myself agree with him. I strongly suggest using more the "Preview" function as well, it will save you unnecessary edits. DocVinewood (talk) 15:17, January 24, 2019 (UTC)

Broken svg files[]

Hope you don't mind but I fixed the Slovenia flag svg issue. You can't just rename any old graphic image as an svg, it has to be converted to scalable vector graphic format for it to work. I just pinched the public domain .svg version from Wikipedia (with attribution of course) since I knew it would work.

And now the .svg is doing weird stuff for me too - it looked OK immediately after upload, then screws with the shield part a few minutes later. The svg code looks valid at 1st glance, so at this point, leave it in its messy state while I look into it. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 07:44, January 28, 2019 (UTC)
I found this which seems to be valid for the issue we were seeing. Added the <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> to the file. That immediately fixed the rendering of the full size image but the thumbnails and small size image previews obviously cache their png conversion on the webserver so did not show the corrected image even after a forced refresh or using a different browser (to validate it wasn't my own local cached copy). Since I have no idea how long that cache will take to refresh and have no patience, I have re-deleted the "good" version and will leave it a couple of hours before I re-upload. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 08:21, January 28, 2019 (UTC)
Discussion header split from the promotion/staff question as I have dragged it off-topic.
SVG files are essentially xml documents that the webserver interprets and renders as a png to the browser. Any text editor can open and edit the xml. I use Notepad++ (open source) I don't pretend to understand how the svg code works in any detail to be able to make meaningful manual adjustments to the image. Any vector graphic editor such as Inkscape (open source) can create and edit graphically though. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 09:48, January 28, 2019 (UTC)
Could not fix the one from Wikipedia so found a new one on flaglane.com and used that instead. Completely different and obviously more compliant xml code used. That one works fine. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 19:43, January 28, 2019 (UTC)

Hey Konan, sorry but my turn to get interrupted in an admin action and for you to step in and take a different tack. From my own research using the Director Mode models as a guide, the most obvious issue to me right away was the Carson Avenue set who occupy the apartments along Strawberry Avenue more often than not. There's certainly a lot of blurring of the borders of where the various sets can spawn, enough to make a hard border line almost impossible to define. (Reset indent)Well, when something is considered "almost impossible to create accurately", encouraging attempts would result in multiple possible variations, each with areas that could easily be disputed by other contributors with little likelihood of consensus being reached of what is "right", simply because the game blurs those lines and allows Set spawns to crossover what some may consider a border. And above all else, I don't think the page requires it. About the only place we have anything similar in relation to Sets territories is the 3D Universe Ballas which can be determined by the Gang Warfare in GTA San Andreas maps, provided in-game, not needing to be invented by users. Infobox title pluralization[]

Hello Talim

I've noticed some inconsistencies with some of the titling format on the pages. For example the article for chickens has a pluralized title while the article for dogs was not pluralized.

Although I do not expect to recieve an answer, I still would like to hear the reasons behind this inconsistency. Was it intentional or just errors?

Thank you for reading

Portable Infobox Image - formatting captions[]

No. Monk has been trying to get Fandom to fix that for months. It doesn't work. Been broken as long as PortableInfobox has been in production on wikia. AFAIK, the mediawiki version (0.3?) does support some raw HTML formatting, but css <font-style> and wikitext markup '' will never work. Fandom's version doesn't support any method (even HTML <b> or <i> tags don't work). The only workaround is to split caption into a dedicated field in the infobox template (Monk has already done that on several templates), not as a sub-section of the image source where it is rendered in-line. I haven't bothered to look deeply into it to see if we can fudge some other workaround. I suspect it would break more than it fixes. If you search italics in the Wiki Discord chat, you'll find several mentions of the issue and Monk's responses. Having now had a quick look, I'm wondering whether I may try a couple of things... the mediawiki version of extension:PortableInfobox was developed from the original written by Wikia. I don't know whether there has been any porting back into wikia's version of the improvements made by mediawiki team. e.g. is the <media> source better than using <image> and if the newer media source is supported in our Fandom version, is the backwards compatibility alias function for image the code that actually breaks the caption in-line formatting? I may have a bit of a play, possibly tonight. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 03:28, February 27, 2019 (UTC)
As I expected, the improved branch of PortableInfobox available in MediaWiki isn't implemented by Wikia/Fandom, they are still using their "original" which doesn't include improvements like "More HTML tags are allowed in captions". So <media> is also unsupported and breaks the infobox completely, but that also eliminated alias functionality for the <image> source being a possible cause of the caption issue. I tried a couple of other tricks but it made no difference (or in the case of embedding the caption in a div, broke captioning completely). I suspect the only way this will be fixed will be Fandom implementing the improved mediawiki version of the PortableInfobox code (which will probably break stuff they have implemented since mediawiki branched it off) so is pretty unlikely. I might do some more study on what can be done with <figcaption> elements as that is how the image caption is being rendered (see: the wikia help page). Thanks[]

That whole page was actually one of my projects, from the start. See its development before being accepted (even though it shows Vaultboy Tom as the author of the "production" page). We'd been having some discussion on Discord about adding the rename section since we seem to have agreed to leave the "all users can rename" permission in place, and your updates reminded me I hadn't done that yet. I did have it on my todo list though. I'm still deciding how to word the changes to the {{ImageLicense}} template. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 10:21, March 4, 2019 (UTC)

Template:ImageLicense updated significantly with "What you should do now" section and trimmed/reorganised the rest too. I don't know if it's any friendlier but it covers all the bases now. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 09:49, March 13, 2019 (UTC)
Oh sorry I thought I had answered that last week. It's been a pretty hectic couple of weeks. Short answer is No. Only sysops can rename without redirects, for exactly the reason you surmise... it becomes de facto deletion and much more likely to cause disruption when abused (redlinks everywhere). It is something I am considering covering in the long overdue drafting of the redirects policy that is still on my personal 'to do' list. Grand Theft Auto V/Online radar icons page[]

Hello Admin, I was thinking that we should have a page listing and explaining all the Radar Icons in GTA 5 and in GTA 5 Online. This is because some new players may not understand all the radar icons like the ones for crate missions, export export missions, nightclub missions and such.

Note: I left this message from my mobile device so it’s very inconvenient for me to mark all the stuff like titles and signatures. I’ll correct them once I get an opportunity to

RFP page[]

Hi Konan, there's an open RfP from Cam that requires some Bureaucratic input on his eligibility to apply for an Administrator role. Would appreciate your input. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 08:55, March 13, 2019 (UTC)

Redirect permissions?[]

Not only did I know that standard users cannot rename without redirect, I specifically used my old standard user account to test it when I was writing the tutorial additions and the screenshot clearly shows no redirect tickbox option. Wow. Just... wow. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 21:33, March 13, 2019 (UTC)

For the record, it's pretty obvious that standard users can't suppress redirects at all, since it falls more or less under the same principle of deletion. In fact, Special:ListGroupRights shows that the "suppressredirect" tool is not present in the "(all)"/Autoconfirmed/Users groups (neither in the rollback group). Sometimes I think we were wrong to not move to message walls :( would save so much aggravation by having properly threaded conversations. Anyway, as per Ultimate94ninja's comment above (ninja'd your question before it was asked), all rights are listed in the special page which shows that patrollers don't get that permission.
tbh, I always felt that our Patrollers were given the wrong rights groups (rollback + chat moderator) because the chat moderator group conflicted with moderator (I think), but the groups have been fiddled with so much now that rollback is now probably the only one they need (since chat is now replaced by Discord which has its own rights assignment). Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 22:34, March 13, 2019 (UTC)
I wasn't really advocating for message walls/discussions, that was just my way of explaining my heated response (title now changed btw). I don't particularly like message walls either and am happier with talk pages too. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 08:53, March 14, 2019 (UTC)
Did you read the "additional information about individual rights." (linked at the top of the ListGroupRights page?
As to your specific questions:
  • renameuser - as far as I know, it only gives a user access to the Special:UserRenameTool (provided it has not already been used - as it has on this account for me). That tool only ever applies to the individual user. It doesn't do anything else.
  • rename mainspace - even though the file and mainspace page rename permissions seem to be listed separately, I believe from Monk's interactions with Fandom staff that they cannot be split in group permissions - if we want autoconfirmed to move files, they have to be allowed to move pages. Doesn't make sense to me either but it is what it is. As far as the vandalism threat, this has been discussed ad nauseum on the community discussions every time the proposal was put forward with the conclusion normally being that since any user can rename a page with bad intent, any other user can also rectify that by moving it back, just like any other act of vandalism or invalid edit. As far as I can recall, I've only seen 2 or 3 improper moves since the permission was granted and I think 1 of those wasn't necessarily vandalism, just a good faith but misguided change.
Hope that helps. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 20:45, March 18, 2019 (UTC)

Username changes[]

You can easily find any user's previous name by checking the history of the user page for the Fandom change. In my case you will find this one. The name being created and identified as a "standard user" that staff could test use to test their tools on, similar to McJeff's old test account. Underage[]

Check the Fandom TOU - it is 16 for EU, not 13.

In order to use certain portions of the Service (described in more detail in our Privacy Policy), you will need to first register on the Service. You must not register for membership in the Service where you are prohibited by law. In addition, the Service is intended solely for users who are:

  • In the EEA (excluding the UK), 16 or older; or
  • In the rest of the world (including the UK), 13 or older.

Any registration by anyone under those ages in the applicable jurisdictions is unauthorized, unlicensed and in violation of this Agreement. By registering for the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet the age requirement set forth above and that you agree to and will abide by all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

Reblocked with correct expiry. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 19:37, March 27, 2019 (UTC)

And before you come back with the "Texas" isn't in the EEA counter-argument - he's just a liar, that profile field was changed after his block, he also changed his age from 12 to 15 when I blocked him for 1 year based on being 12, he also claimed to be from southern Lithuania (hence the change to a 16yr old limit). Even if Texas is true, that's his fault for the fakery he tried to pull to avoid the block. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 20:19, March 27, 2019 (UTC)
Well, thanks to you, this completely immature kid (the reason the age limit rule was invoked and enforced in the first place) is now spamming both Monk and my message walls at Fandom CC, so the damage is well and truly done. FYI, it has been a recent change, spurred by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law changes in the EU within the last 12 months. This is a pretty good summary (in reasonably lay terms) of the change that spurred the updated ToU. I believe some social media sites are falling into line already. It is worth noting that the goalposts are shifting within individual countries of the EEA... Lithuania has actually imposed a 14 year limit, but we are bound by Fandom's interpretation and limitation imposing the blanket limit. Re: Regarding your edit to "An American Divorce"[]

Great Evening,

Dc1note

US $1 bank note.

The left hand side of the bank note has a circular stamp with an "L" and the text is at low resolution. Based on the length and actual comparisons it still vaguely has "Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco California" on it. I've uploaded this image so you can have a clearer look.

Thank You, friend!

Greeting from the United States of America. First I want to say, with respect, you have my condolences for your unfortunate loss. Thank you for informing me of the errors on the previous talk, I compose a lot of emails and I attempted to relpy in said format. There is also no need to apologize, for the currency difference is obviously forgiveable. However the page is now a bit out of whack and it looks like I'll have to reset the headings and line markers. Otherwise, I apperciate the feedback. Thank you for being cordial and I hope you have a great evening, my friend.Christopher2142 (talk) 07:53, March 29, 2019 (UTC)Christopher2142

Unblocking concerns[]

I note you managed to read this message on my CC wall. Did you manage to look any further and find this one on Sean's CC wall from late January? That would have led you directly to the thread on my wall here (warning - language is offensive) which he has removed from public view which was the completely justifiable reason for imposing the infinite block in the first place (as Sean spelled out in the polite negative response to him in January). Sean and I both reviewed this block in January when he also joined the Discord to request it, and we both agreed 100% that the block should remain and he was also banned from the Discord. Nothing has changed in the intervening 2 months to justify your arbitrary overturning of this block. Monk Talk 23:27, March 30, 2019 (UTC)

Talim, the note on the Special:Unblock page clearly says "Please discuss the block with the blocking administrator before unblocking". That's what you should have done in the first place; it's not up to you to make the sole decision of unblocking him. I'm now restoring the block until the discussion about whether the ban should be lifted or not comes to a conclusion, and I must ask you for the future not to make such arbitrary decisions on your own, please. Plus, a year of punishment doesn't automatically mean a user can change, regardless of their age (nevermind the fact that this specific one still has inappropriate profile info at the top); in fact, I've seen users who, after more than 5 years, did not improve (and even became worse) compared to before. Ultimate94ninja talk · contribs 12:28, March 31, 2019 (UTC)
I'm not sure, I guess it's the Discord discussion that Smurfy mentioned on Sam's talk page. And yeah, the precedent that you linked was an incredibly bad choice; in fact, a former b'crat mentioned at some point that the decision was unilateral and inappropriate. Ultimate94ninja talk · contribs 13:28, March 31, 2019 (UTC)
While I do agree with you that he has seemingly "matured", it is not necessarily the case, and could just be putting the act on to get around the block. Regardless, that's not my main concern. His attitude was disgusting back then, his contributions are slack - mainly user page and talk page edits, so with that in mind, what good would unblocking this user be? They haven't claimed they will "change" and they haven't exactly proposed anything positive towards the wiki, and the only thing on their record is a bad attitude, there are no positives and the block was made with clear intention that he should not and will not return. Their past history of bad behavior in general has already warranted an infinite ban according to the blocking policy (even if the policy can vary case-by-case and doesn't always apply).
Regardless of any of this, the fact the unblock was made in the first place, at a completely random occasion, and I must say - just after your prolonged inactivity, without any sort of discussion isn't greatly pleasing. Unblocks of any kind should ideally be discussed with other administrators and any relevant points be brought to the table so everybody sees the same side of the story, but I also believe there should be a certain amount of trust for other administrators who simply make you aware that someone isn't worth unblocking, even if they don't immediately bring you all the facts, there is usually a good reason for a block of such a length (infinite).
On a final note, while I appreciate your concerns for blocks and unblocks, I do advise that such cases are discussed thoroughly before action is taken to unblock a user. Monk Talk 13:30, March 31, 2019 (UTC)
There is no "further discussion" required for this particular block - protocol when 2 Bureaucrats can not agree is for the third to have the casting "vote", and Sam has already replied and agreed that the block should have remained in force. As stated above, using the Tom/Boomer situation as a precedent for anything is not appropriate - there was a lot more than incivility behind that situation.
This does give rise to a curlier question about the use of Discord to discuss matters like this. Monk and I and 6 or 7 other staff are relying on it quite a bit, but it shouldn't be compulsory, and some discussions that take place there are still better suited to the wiki, either community noticeboard or article/user talk, since a more permanent record needs to be available sometimes. More of the same old thing[]

Trampling all over other staff actions again. Staff had already issued the {{image licence}} reminder to both users when they were uploaded. I removed 3 of the poor quality images at the same time, but left the one that had some merit so the user would have the opportunity to respond to the media policy reminder and follow the "fix" instructions... but no, 12 hours later you come along and undo all that work and blatantly contradict the earlier actions by Sam, Noirlime4L and Kamikatsu by telling the user their images are now deleted. I have restored them. You are really pushing it. Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 04:51, April 8, 2019 (UTC)

It is exactly what you are doing and once again you are too blind to see it. Users uploads image(s) 14:44:23 & 21:49:28, staff take appropriate actions and leave correct messages on user talk pages within 15 minutes of the editor uploading and adding - it's timestamped and everything: 14:59:30 & 21:54:03. Now, 10-12 hours later, with no intervening actions, you come along and contradict the initial actions taken by those other staff members. What part of that is factually incorrect? Smurfy: illuminate - communicate - spectate 05:11, April 8, 2019 (UTC)
You're missing the point if you think this is about your enforcement of the media policy. I actually agree with you 100% about the Tommy Vercetti image, but I saw that another staff had taken action so I respected their decision. The Paige Harris images, 3/4 were really poor images so I went ahead and removed those, leaving the one "good" one to still be the subject of the licence reminder that had already been given.
This is 100% about the over-ruling of your fellow staff team-mates who had already exercised their own discretion in deciding what actions to take with the non-compliant images. You cannot claim staff seniority, your fellow Bureaucrat was one of the team-mates you have ignored. This is why I labelled this "more of the same" in relation to your recent improper actions with underage and blocked users. If you think this is re-opening wounds, get some anaesthetic ready. Inactivity[]

Hi Konan, how are you doing?

It has been 6 months since you posted your inactivity notice on your user page. I understand and sympathize in full regarding the loss of a family member, and wish your family well during such a difficult time. I hope you are doing well.

With regards to your activity here on the wiki, do you have plans to return to being active again as Bureaucrat? As it has been a while since you last made a significant amount of edits, it is my duty to ensure all staff members are at least semi-active and able to respond to situations relatively quickly, especially those who are of higher positions. Unfortunately your current contributions raise alarms in that regard.

Again, I hope you are doing well, and do not feel pressured to return straight away. Some notice as to whether you are able to return active again would be much appreciated, however. Thank you! Monk Talk 18:48, August 18, 2019 (UTC)
