Boomshine Saigon is the second and final mission in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City given to protagonist Tommy Vercetti by Phil Cassidy from his firearms business in Little Haiti, Vice City.

Mission

Tommy goes to Phil's Place and finds a drunken Phil, who shows him his boomshine bombs. Phil presses the detonator as Tommy ducks down on reflex, but the bomb fails to detonate. Realizing it must be the remote's batteries, Phil staggers over where he has fresh ones sitting on the bench beside the bomb. Having just changed the batteries, Phil throws up his arms in celebration, with the bomb just off to his right. The motion causes him to accidentally detonate the bomb, and the explosion blows off Phil's right arm. Phil knows he's injured, but only falls to his knees laughing, too drunk to feel the pain.

Intoxicated by the boomshine fumes, Tommy gets Phil into his Patriot and drives him to the West Haven Community Healthcare Centre. However, a hallucinating Phil states that the hospital is full of police and Viet Cong, and instead asks to be driven to an ex-army surgeon in Little Havana (as he owes Phil a favor, and a lawnmower), completing the mission.

Tommy Vercetti goes to Phil's Place in Little Haiti, where he finds a drunk Phil Cassidy working on a bomb. Tommy: Hey, Phil, how's it goin'? Phil: Heeeeeeeeeeyyy, Tommy! Howyadoin'? Ish been too long... Tommy: I swear, you should lay off that boomshine, man - smells like paint stripper. It's making my eyes burn... Phil: Shhh, shhh shhh yourself, Tommy, and come over here because there's someshin' I wanna show you... someshin'. Phil leads Tommy to a nearby crate. Tommy: Woof! God! Should I be able to smell that from way over here? I'm feeling woozy. Phil: Don'tchaworry about the shmell, Tommy, you just wash thish. Phil attempts to detonate the bomb, except the detonator doesn't work. Phil: Shittycheapbatterish or shumin'. There'sh shum more on the bench. Phil walks over to the bomb and inserts the new batteries into the detonator. Phil: TA-DAAAAA! Phil unknowingly pushes the detonator, causing the bomb to explode and blow his arm off. Phil: Aww, damn! Phil laughs as he falls on the ground, too drunk to feel the pain. Tommy takes Phil and puts him in the Patriot, driving to the West Haven Community Healthcare Centre in Little Havana while being dizzy from the Boomshine fumes. Phil: *Watch out! Charlie in the tree line! *Is it me, or are the roads made of jelly? *Broken Spoon to Mother Hen, do you copy? *Spooney wooney woo woo wooooo! *He's come for me, boy! *Black feathered wings beating all around... Tommy arrives at the hospital. Phil: Not the hospital, man! Too many cops and Viet Cong! There's an ex-army surgeon owes me a few favors and a lawnmower. He's got a place down Little Havana - ooo look, a giant fish. Tommy takes Phil to his ex-army surgeon, located near Café Robina. Phil gets out of the truck and slowly heads to the surgeon's place.

Walkthrough

Tommy arrives at Phil's Place in Little Haiti and greets him.

Phil welcomes Tommy and appears to be extremely drunk. Tommy tells him that he should tone it down with the alcoholism.

Phil tells Tommy to be silent for a bit and tells him he wants to show him something.

Tommy asks Phil if he's supposed to smell the boomshine all the way from there or if something's wrong.

Phil tells Tommy not to worry about to smell and tells him to watch him as he attempts to detonate the explosives on the table.

The detonator doesn't work and Phil instead goes to get some batteries from the table.

Phil puts the batteries into the detonator.

Phil excitedly shows the fixed detonator to Tommy.

While showing the detonator to Tommy, Phil accidentally presses the detonate button and the bomb goes off as he's standing next to it.

Phil accidentally blew his arm off.

Tommy must get Phil to the hospital before he bleeds out, but the boomshine has slightly intoxicated Tommy and he can't drive properly.

Phil notices where Tommy took him and he tells him to get him somewhere else, as there's too much police there.

Instead, Phil tells Tommy to get him to a surgeon he knows who operates out of Little Havana.

Phil's injury puts him out of action for a while and Tommy is done doing jobs for him.

However, from now on, Tommy can go to Phil's Place and buy heavy firepower from him whenever he needs it.

Mission passed.

Trivia

• The song that can be heard playing in the background during the opening cutscene is "Burnin' for You" by Blue Öyster Cult. This song is not featured on any of the in-game radio stations and cannot be heard at any other time in the game.
• Subsequent releases of the game (starting with the 2.0.1/ PS2 double pack version) reduced and altered the blurry effect.
• During the cutscene, Phil blows off his right arm. However, it shows him with it intact and his left arm missing when he is dropped off at the doctor. This means the initial cutscene is incorrect as in the GTA III mission Arms Shortage and the GTA Liberty City Stories mission More Deadly Than the Male, Phil is missing his left arm while his right arm is intact.
• The mission's name is a reference to the Billy Joel song "Goodnight Saigon". Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and Phil often claimed he served in the Vietnam War.
• This is the only time in the 3D Universe that the player can be arrested for drunk-driving, as driving near the VCPD will trigger a 1-star wanted level.
• In the PlayStation 2 and Xbox version of the game, if Phil dies, the game will show "Phil Cassidy is dead!!! Now who's gonna supply arms in Liberty?", referring to his involvement in Grand Theft Auto III.
  • In the PC and subsequent versions of the game, the message is changed to "Phil Cassidy is dead!!! Now who's gonna supply arms in Vice City?"
