The Castle Gardens Construction Site is a construction site that appears in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Description[]

The area was originally the construction site for the Imperial Amir Towers, a supertall skyscraper proposed circa 2008 to rise right next to the Humboldt River in Algonquin, and surpass the tallest building of Liberty City, the Rotterdam Tower. The building would have sat on top of an unnamed and seemly disused ferry terminal in Castle Gardens. It was proposed and designed by Yusuf Amir, in order to impress his father Abdul Amir.

The plans for the Imperial Amir Towers have been cancelled after the events of the mission Deconstruction for Beginners. After the plans of the construction have been changed, the area was split into two separate yards in 2009 by a fence – Yusuf's "memorial construction" being in the western side, adjacent to the Castle Gardens Hotel, playing no major role in the storyline whatsoever.

The eastern construction site is updated in GTA Chinatown Wars, now featuring three buildings under construction, with two of them being the base of one of the former Imperial Amir Towers split in two. This change was primarily made for one of the final boss battles in the game.

Inspiration[]

The Imperial Amir Towers project is inspired by the cancelled Fox & Fowle Architects' South Ferry Plaza construction project in Lower Manhattan, which was planned to be built on top of the South Ferry terminal and tower 1,084 ft (330 m) above street level, with 60 stories of office space.

Events[]

Events of Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City[]

Playboy X sends Niko to clear out every last Union tough-guy goon, working for the Messina Crime Family, on the construction site seized by the Union workers from Yusuf. Playboy X believes that Yusuf will then notice that Playboy X means business and join his team. The site had been shut down because of disagreements with the property developer, Yusuf Amir, that resulted in a strike.

According to a Weazel News radio report, Yusuf Amir had no comment on the shootout and the deaths of the union workers, aside from promising that the development would be suspended as a mark of respect for those who passed.

Events of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars[]

In 2009, the eastern construction yard is under "protection" of the North Korean street gang from Bohan, the Midtown Gangsters, one of the main affiliates of the Liberty City Triads. The boss of one of the major Triad families, Zhou Ming, used to receive a cut from the Koreans' protection money.

However, after Huang Lee's attacks on the Koreans for being suspects on the recent murder of his father and the theft of his family heirloom Yu Jian Sword, the gang lost their protection racket in Castle Gardens.

Shortly after, the Irish American Killers from Dukes take over their protection racket in the construction site. While Zhou is greatly infuriated over Huang's acts, he sees that as an opportunity to show the current businessmen who own the construction site that the "protection" provided by Irish gangsters cannot protect them against fire damage. Zhou provides a Flamethrower to Huang Lee, who uses it to burn the construction supplies at the yard, as well as killing several Irish gangsters in the process. Zhou's Triad gang takes over the protection racket for themselves after this mission.

However, Zhou Ming's Triad gang lose most of their influence when Zhou and Chan are framed as rats within the Triads by a phony FIB file. Huang's uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee is given the leader position of the Liberty City Triads by Hsin Jaoming as soon as he retires. On his first day as the leader, he orders the death of both Zhou Ming and Chan Jaoming, a task that Huang Lee takes on. Huang confronts Zhou and his Triad clan in the construction site, which leads into a massive shootout against all of Zhou's men. Huang uses each of the construction towers to get a clear shot to shoot down Zhou's attack helicopter.
