Before the release of Grand Theft Auto 2, there were features that were changed or removed from the final product. These include vehicle design changes, vehicle removal, and changes to weapons.
Weapons[]
- A weapon called the "Microwave" was removed. According to the official GTA 2 Design Document, "Cooks all peds in vicinity of where it is aimed. Takes a few seconds of ‘charge’ time, and then pings as ped(s) in vacinity explode. Spark effects if it hits a car." Judging by the description it's most likely an early version of the Electro Gun.
- A weapon called the "Instant Vehicle Bomb" was removed.
- A weapon called the "ElectroBaton" was removed.
- An item called "Binoculars" which was mentioned in the wish of stuff they wish to implemented in also from GTA 2's design doc, according to it, was suppose to "Allows player to move camera within defined zone to see off - screen."
- A weapon called the "Sniper Rifle" also mentioned in the wish of stuff, which was suppose to "Gives player controllable cross - hair which can be used to pick off peds at long distance."
- An item called, "Dummy tracker" another one of the wish items which has an interesting use, which was suppose to be an "Multiplay only. Attached to another car or character, leads other players to that car/ped instead of you for a limited time."
- An throwable called the "Tear Gas" yet again also in the wish items, "Fired in a trajectory and disorients peds with an alpha’ d smoke cloud effect. Likely to be single player only to avoid the dullness of obscuring a players view. Effect subject to experimentation."
- An car weapon mod, called the "Car: Stinger" also mentioned in Wish items, which seems to be caltrops, "Drop from back of car and any following cars have their tyres burst - handling gets screwed and clunky metal, rubber flapping sound effects."
Locations[]
- In the promo movie & inside the game files, districts by the names of Chernobyl Docks, Romanova[1], Azimuth[2], Barking[3], and Kyabetsu[4] were going to be in the game, but they were removed. Also, Arbo[5] and Gonad[6] were actually referenced by name in the police dispatch instead of being called "South Central".
Radios and songs[]
- Ridiculous FM - a progressive rock radio with a single song that would have lasted 20 minutes.
- Rev. Rooney & The Rocksta Choir's "God Bless All The Universe" was going to have more profanity.
Ray Larabie's early vehicle designs[]
Ray Larabie (born 1970 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian designer of computer TrueType and OpenType fonts.
Larabie has previously worked for Rockstar Games (in particular Rockstar Toronto), designing for the Grand Theft Auto series. Among his accomplishments were the designs of vehicles in Grand Theft Auto 2, although they were never used. His designs look much more futuristic than the final versions.
