I know a place on the edge of the Red Light District where we can lay low, but my hands are all messed up so you better drive, brother.
8-Ball

Give Me Liberty is the first storyline mission of Grand Theft Auto III. It is given to protagonist Claude by explosives expert 8-Ball from the Callahan Bridge, Portland Island, Liberty City. The mission serves as a tutorial mission, teaching new players how to control the game.

Description

Following the ambush of their prison convoy and the subsequent attack on the Callahan Bridge, Claude and 8-Ball have escaped but are now isolated on Portland Island. After locating an abandoned Kuruma, 8-Ball informs Claude that he knows a place for them to lay low and find work, but Claude will need to drive there due to 8-Ball's injured hands.

After arriving at Claude's new hideout in the Red Light District, the duo change into civilian clothes before driving to Sex Club Seven, a strip club owned by Luigi Goterelli. Arriving at the club automatically triggers the next mission.

Claude drives to Luigi's club.
8-Ball: This is Luigi's club. Let's go round the back and use the service door.

Trivia

  • Non-chronologically, this is the first storyline mission in the 3D Era.
    • Chronologically, this is the last introduction in 3D Era.
  • It is possible for this mission to fail to load thus keeping the prison uniform and a lot of other things. A video of this can be seen here.
  • As the GTA III physics engine does not permit cars to be turned on their side, the destroyed cars blocking the bridge will either be right side up or upside down. Strangely, standing in the flames of the burning cars will not damage Claude's health. A video of this can be seen here.
  • The mission title may be a reference to Patrick Henry's famous words "Give me liberty or give me death!", as well as the name of Liberty City.
  • For the first two in-game hours (until 6:00am), the player is exempt from gaining a wanted level. A video of this can be seen here.
  • The Kuruma used in the mission has a unique Teal colour, which can be stored after completing the following mission. In the Beta version of the game, the player originally drove a purple Sentinel.
  • In PC version, after the white screen fades out with the destroyed bridge on-screen, you can see the wrecked Enforcer, but also a lighter one of it standing on its wheels. The 2 are inside each other and it's not very hard to see. The glitch happens because the cutscene object (in this case, the healthly Enforcer) was not scripted to disappear, or at least "teleport" away from the screen. A video can be seen here.
  • Usually the mission starts at 4:07 but when you fail the mission (after the second part of the mission where you go to your safehouse) it starts at 4:09 which is doesn't make any sense. You usually don't gain police attention in this mission but if you fail it after the second part of the mission then you can gain wanted level. A video of this can be seen here.
