IFruit-App

The iFruit App was a companion application for Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online that allowed players to perform various tasks for in-game benefit, as well as access other Grand Theft Auto content. As of December 12th, 2022[1], the app was no longer supported and was removed from the App Store and Google Play.

Description[]

The app was meant to replicate the UI of an iFruit phone, a clear parody of Apple iOS, specifically iOS 6. Within the "home screen", the app included a Los Santos Customs app that allowed players to remotely customize and make custom plates for their previously used vehicles in GTA V and GTA Online, a Chop the Dog app that allowed players to train and play mini games with Chop, settings for the app itself, and various links to other Grand Theft Auto-related apps, games, and website.

Shutdown/Replacement[]

The Grand Theft Auto: iFruit App will no longer be supported as of December 12, 2022. We are currently developing a new method to allow players to customize their license plates via the GTA Online website, and we will provide an update when there is more information to share.

In the final few years of the iFruit App's existence, consistent updates and support became slowed and the app became entirely nonfunctional on newer versions of iOS and Android. On December 12th, 2022, the app was officially dropped and delisted by Rockstar Games, with a promise of a new service to replace the LS Customs app's Custom License Plates functionality coming soon. No replacement for the Chop the Dog app has been announced or speculated.

Starting next week, you'll be able to add more personality to your favorite rides with a new web-based License Plate Creator for customizing vanity plates in GTA Online. With this new tool you can create up to 30 custom plates by placing orders via desktop or mobile web browsers — and then pick up and apply your plate in game.

Main article: License Plate Creator

On April 13th, 2023, as part of the Rockstar Newswire message for Boor Week, the License Plate Creator was announced. This web browser-based page allows players to create up to 30 custom plates that can be applied to vehicles in Los Santos Customs. This new site would be launched the following week on April 20th alongside the Shake Up and Top Marks Week event.

LS Customs[]

The LS Customs app allowed the player to modify the protagonists' vehicles, changing the color of the car, adding different colors of tire smoke, and more. This allowed the player to no longer have to start the game when they need to customize their vehicle. When the user ordered the customisations made to the car in the app, the order was processed when the player next enters the game. The player would then be prompted to take the vehicle to the nearest Los Santos Customs to apply the customisations. Money was taken from the protagonist to pay any modifications.

For GTA V, the app would not always display the personal vehicle of the protagonist - it would display the last vehicle driven in the game as that protagonist (i.e. if a player last played as Franklin driving a Sentinel XS, the information about that car would show up in the app). For GTA Online access to each of the online player's 30 customisable vehicles at one time was not possible within the app. The app only displayed the last 10 personal vehicles used per online character.

The online player could also add up to 30 custom license plates (increased from a single plate in the Heists update), which allowed an individual custom plate to be applied to every vehicle the player can store in their online garages.

Chop the Dog[]

Chop the Dog was a mini-game app which focused on taking care of a virtual version of Chop. Throughout the day (in real life), the user would get notifications from the app whenever Chop was hungry, thirsty or lazy. The player then must give him food and water, along with taking him for walks.

Chop would throw up and get upset if the player overfed him, decreasing his happiness (recognizable by the bone located on the top left corner of the screen). Occasionally, Chop would also defecate, requiring the player to use the glove icon to pick it up and put it in the appropriate trash can.

Players could also use the app to teach Chop new tricks and switch the color of his leash. Chop could perform any trick he learned in the app in GTA V, his leash color in the game would also reflect the one chosen in the app.

If the player chose to take Chop for a walk, they could chose between 3 different stages (Park, Street and Beach). Once the stage is chosen, a mini-game starts, with the player in control of Chop. The task that must be completed depended on the stage selected:

  • Park, Chop must keep other dogs away from his bitch by scaring them off within the time limit; Getting insufficient love or losing the bitch fails the game; winning the bitch's love allows Chop to have sex, increasing his happiness.
  • Street, Chop must keep the Ballas away from Franklin's Buffalo S on a street in LS. If the Ballas damage Franklin's Buffalo, it will explode and the user fails the game; keeping the Ballas away from the Buffalo long enough increases his happiness.
  • Beach, Chop must rip the bikinis off from the women that pass by and avoid getting shoo'd by annoying juicers. These guys can punch or kick Chop, failing the game; ripping the bikinis of the women causes them to run away and gives points to Chop.

Failing any of the mini-games resulted in Chop's happiness decreasing. Winning a gold medal in all 3 mini-games unlocked an exclusive gold leash to be used by Chop.

Feeding Chop food and water, teaching him tricks and buying leashes would cost credits, which were generated throughout the day (in real life) or could be obtained in the mini-games.

Keeping Chop happy was important as it allowed him to behave well and perform the new tricks you teach him. Killing Chop in GTA V resulted in Chop's Happiness draining completely.

Settings[]

The settings menu allowed the player to link the app to their Social Club account and switch platforms from one console to another if they had migrated from PS3/Xbox 360 to the enhanced version of GTA V. The player could also link to their Facebook account, which allowed players to post iFruit App updates to their Facebook wall.

Tutorial notifications could also be reset for the LSC and Chop apps. Chop notifications could be enabled or disabled.

Reception[]

The iFruit App received mixed to negative reviews, most notably from its limited options for Los Santos Customs and problematic loading times for both the iOS and Android. Many fans have also expressed much detest for the iFruit App as it strips away some features that could have been placed within the game itself, such as the inability to train Chop without installing the App on a Smartphone.
