Influence

The diagnostic system is likely based on one of the old models which could popularly be found in high-end mechanic garages for several decades, before slowly being replaced by simpler machines in the 1990s. Likely candidates include the Sun MEA-1500 and the Sun 1020 engine diagnostic systems.

The computer's name is similar to two robotic characters of science fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey's villain computer HAL 9000 and Red Dwarf's service mechanoid Kryten.
