Template:Infobox vehicles The P-996 Lazer is a fighter jet that appears in Grand Theft Auto V, and is arguably the overall fastest vehicle in the game.
Design
The aircraft is based off of the F-16C Fighting Falcon with strong accents of the F-18 Hornet in the tail fins and air intakes. The P-996 is equiped with dual miniguns, which is reminiscent of the F-20 Tigershark, and lock-on missiles, like it's helicopter counterpart. These missiles can take down a police helicopter in one hit, however to take down a civilian plane, it will require several sustained hits before it goes down. The plane does not feature countermeasures of any kind.
Locations
- GTA V
- Several spawn in and around Fort Zancudo, sometimes in use.
- Flying around San Andreas.
Trivia
- The jet has characteristics resembling the F-16 Falcon, with dual canted tail fins reminiscent of the F-18 Hornet, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
- If the player lands in water, the player can eject from the plane much like in real life. They will be flung into the air and subsequently splash down.
- If the player successfully steals this jet from Fort Zancudo, they must place it in a hangar as soon as possible, as there seems to be a "kill switch" that kills the engine after a short period of time. If the player then exits, they will not be able to enter it again.
- The jet will save when placed in a player's hangar but will be lost completely upon switching hangar vehicles.
- It does not contain any countermeasures of any kind, resulting in the player having to perform barrel rolls in an attempt to dodge the incoming missiles.
- Two P-996 Lazers will intercept Trevor in the mission Minor Turbulence and eventually shoot down his hijacked cargo plane.
- AI controlled P-996 Lazers can use flares, making it harder to be shot down with Heat-Seeking Missiles.
- The plane's guns fire high explosive rounds in extremely quick succession, and will make short work of any vehicle; the only down side is that they are unusually short ranged.
- As of the 1.02 patch, the P-996 Lazer, when using missiles, has a realistic lock-on target square in front of the plane.
Behind the Scenes
- Many GTA fans thought that the P-996 was the Fighter that got removed from GTA IV, but it is in fact a separate aircraft.
