+
The Patriot is a recurring four-door SUV (formerly a military vehicle) that has appeared in almost every Grand Theft Auto games since Grand Theft Auto III. It is manufactured by Mammoth in the HD Universe.

  +
Design
The Mammoth Patriot is a recurring off-road/utility vehicle in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, meant to parody the Hummer lineup.

  +
In general, the Patriot is depicted as a large SUV, employed by both the military and civilians, meant to parody the Hummer lineup, as well as its military counterpart, the HMMWV.

Design
+
3D Universe
  +
In Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the Patriot resembles a Hummer H1 and is popular as a civilian SUV, often found in Portland and Staunton Island. Patriots come with heavy-duty bumper defenses and may spawn with four different bed configurations: Standard, with roll bars, with a small bed cover and a large bed cover. The vehicle is seen in a variety of primary colors, with secondary-colored defenses, handles, roll bars and window trim (set to different shades of grey).
In general, the Patriot is depicted as a large SUV, employed by both the military and civilians. The Patriot resembles an AM General Motors HMMWV (GTA VC, GTA SA, GTA VCS , GTA V (Beta), a Hummer H1 (GTA III, GTA LCS, GTA CW) and a Hummer H2 (GTA IV and (GTA V).

  +
In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Patriot resembles an unarmed HMMWV, and is reserved for the military, reflecting the adoption of the HMMWV at the time and the civilian Hummer having yet to gain the popularity that it would in later years.
  +
  +
The design of the Patriot undergoes only minor cosmetic changes compared to the GTA III model, being the side steps, horizontal door handles and amber lights on the rear bumper. The GTA San Andreas rendition, however, features significant modifications on the body which present the Patriot as a more rugged, off-road vehicle, with a shortened truck bed, slanting A and C Pillar (car), a vehicle snorkel (which unfortunately does not allow the truck to wade in water), and redesigned front and rear fascia.
  +
  +
The military variants of the Patriot are exclusively painted military green in GTA Vice City and GTA Vice City Stories and beige (desert camouflage) in GTA San Andreas, with black bumpers and details; the GTA Vice City Stories variant also features a five-pointed star on the hood lid, denoting its association with the United States' armed forces.
  +
  +
During development, the Patriot in GTA III was previously known as the "Hum Vee", after the HMMWV's "Humvee" nickname. The Hum Vee differs from the Patriot in its particularly low ground clearance, and in the front of the vehicle being more similar to the real-life Humvees.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto IV
  +
In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Patriot, adopting the Mammoth brand, is now designed as a luxury SUV, based on the Hummer H2, with minor alterations such as the tail lights, and no spare tire on the trunk; the grille design is similar to that of a Dodge Caravan#First generation (1984%E2%80%931990).
  +
  +
The Patriot retains the general appearance from the 3D Universe iterations, but depicted with a slightly more luxurious SUV used by civilians. The front end of the vehicle is relatively small, with a flat grille on the center and square lamps on the outer sides, over a silver portion of the car. The lower side is protected by a small bumper with an angled guard, holding the license plate. The front is part of a single compartment that opens forwards, featuring two intakes on the hood area, near the windshield.
  +
  +
The sides denote its modernized appearance, with flared arches and bottom side. A set of side steps can be seen, together with a single exhaust on the driver side. The vehicle also makes use of black, plastic-like door handles and rear-view mirror shells, as well as square-shaped windows, where the ones on rear compartment are tinted. The roof makes use of silver trim on either side and three marker lights on the center, over the windshield and the rear windows.
  +
  +
On the rear, a single compartment door can be seen holding the license plate, just between the vertical tail lights. A large plastic rear bumper protects the rear end, with a "MAMMOTH" texturing on it.
  +
  +
Patriots may spawn with certain accessories, including a bullbar on the front and a set of non-functional spotlights. By default, it comes with step sides, but some variants may have side exhaust pipes. The vehicle is normally depicted with single colors on the bodywork, although most of them can be seen with an American flag vinyl decal on the side. It uses large seven-spoke rims with low-profile tires, most likely custom wheels since an off-road vehicle is usually equipped with small rims and high-profile off-road tires.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
  +
The Patriot is depicted with two different design, depending of the platform:
  +
  +
*In the Nintendo DS version, the Patriot is depicted as a two-door, pickup truck-like body style, similar to a 2-door Hummer H1 pickup truck, complete with a permanent rear canvas covering over its extended bed. This marks the first time in the series the Patriot is depicted in this form.
  +
*In the PSP and iOS, the Patriot assumes a design similar to the GTA IV rendition, adopting the four-door layout.
  +
  +
Grand Theft Auto V and Online
  +
The Patriot in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online has an identical exterior design to the Patriot featured in GTA IV, and retains most of the modification parts, although the American flag decal is absent completely.
  +
  +
The Patriot can assign a secondary color, which is applied on the door handles, while the primary color affects the interior stitching. The vehicle gains an updated rim design, which is similar to the "Supernova" SUV rims found in Los Santos Customs.
  +
  +
  +
After the After Hours update, the Patriot was changed. The vehicle has received numerous model changes, including an entirely new engine. The front and rear lights have received new light textures and the rear lights have been reorganized. After the continuation of the After Hours update, the vehicle is able to have numerous modifications applied, including a non-functional roof light bar, along with Gunrunning liveries, albeit only available in GTA Online.

3D Universe
3D Universe
  +
The 3D Universe Patriot has medium top speed, due to its heavy weight. It is very durable, and has outstanding off-road capabilities, mainly because of high ground clearance, unusual width, and suspension. It can climb very steep gradients due to its standard low-range gearbox, and does not roll, due to the low center of gravity. Because of the low-end torque and acceleration, its engine seems large, especially in first and second gear, and is quite quick for such a large, heavy truck. It is widely assumed that the Patriot has a high-displacement V8. Although it is powerful, caution should be used when driving over vehicles as the Patriot has a tendency to roll over and catch fire. It should also be noted that the Patriot has bulletproof windshields, like the Securicar.
In GTA III and Liberty City Stories, it is popular as a civilian SUV, often found in Portland Island and Staunton Island. In GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice City Stories, however, the vehicle is reserved for military use, reflecting the adoption of the HMMWV at the time and the civilian Hummer having yet to gain the popularity that it would in later years. These military Patriots come with four different bed configurations.

  +
The Patriot in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is powered by a high-output V8, which is capable of powering the large, heavy vehicle up to very high speeds. Acceleration is average, but handling is remarkably sharp for a vehicle of its size and weight. Its low center of gravity and wide frame make it less susceptible to rollovers, and thanks to its 4WD drivetrain, it is able to traverse uneven terrain with ease. Durability is excellent, and is as expected from an armored vehicle.
The design of the Patriot undergoes only minor cosmetic changes for most of the GTA III era. The GTA San Andreas rendition, however, features significant modifications on the body which present the Patriot as a more rugged, off-road vehicle. This Patriot features a shortened truck bed, slanting A and C pillars, a vehicle snorkel (which unfortunately does not allow the truck to wade in water) and redesigned front and rear fascia.

Grand Theft Auto IV
During development, the Patriot in GTA III was previously known as the "Hum Vee", after the HMMWV's "Humvee" nickname. The Hum Vee differs from the Patriot in its particularly low ground clearance, and in the front of the vehicle being more similar to the real-life Humvees.

  +
In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Patriot has relatively impressive performance. As well as being a full off-road vehicle with endless capabilities, it is also very well performing on-road. Its acceleration is surprisingly impressive for a vehicle of its size; its weight being the only issue that contends with this acceleration. Its top speed is not too impressive, but still surpasses several other off-road 4x4 vehicles. In terms of handling, the vehicles turn radius is rather large and therefore cornering does not seem to be much of a problem for the Patriot. Durability is very high for this vehicle, further improved on the NOOSE Patriot - its police variant. It can withstand a large amount of gunfire and does not explode within one shot of an RPG unless it directly hits the underside or engine bay of the vehicle. The vehicle's suspension is rather poor in that the vehicle bounces around a large amount, but due to its off-road capabilities, this is vital, though on road is compromises its steering capabilities as it tends to role in high cornering. Its ramming power is on par with some large trucks, including the Enforcer; it has a large amount of power to push other vehicles out of the way, which is very useful combined with its weight.

  +
The Patriot appears to be powered by a V8 engine, judging by the cover, coupled in a 4-speed gearbox in a front engine, all wheel drive layout. Its engine sound is shared with that of the Voodoo.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online
In the DS version of GTA Chinatown Wars, the Patriot is depicted with a two-door, pickup truck-like body style, similar to a 2-door Hummer H1 pickup truck, complete with a permanent canvas covering over its extended bed, while retaining its oversized and angular design. This marks the first time in the series the Patriot is depicted in this form. In the PSP and iOS versions however the design is the same as the GTA IV rendition.

  +
In Grand Theft Auto V, the Patriot returns as more of an on-road vehicle than an off-road. While the AWD layout remains the same and seems appropriate for off-roading, the major alteration is the suspension, which is now highly stiffened and therefore does not seem fitting for off-road (rock climbing, for example, proves a problem in some instances, as the vehicle tends to become stuck or rolls over). The top speed seems to be higher, and acceleration is further improved. Due to GTA V's revamped physics, its turning radius is now dramatically reduced, but thanks to the suspension fixes, vehicle roll around high cornering is no longer present. Durability is not altered too much, however the slight reduction in weight and power means the vehicle is less capable of ramming other vehicles off the road with ease, compared to its GTA IV appearance.

  +
Originally, the Patriot had the same transversely-mounted V8 cover from its previous iteration. After the update mentioned above, it now has a longitudinally-mounted double-cam Inline-4 with throttle bodies on the intake manifold, to match with the engine model from its stretch variant.
As seen in a screenshot from the Game Informer preview, the Patriot in GTA V, looks identical to the GTA IV version. Thus it can be inferenced that the GTA V Patriot will have similar qualities to the GTA IV version. It should also be worth noting that there is no military iteration of this vehicle this time and is effectively replaced by the Crusader.

GTA III — GTA Vice City Stories
<gallery position="center" spacing="small" widths="270px">
The GTA III era Patriot has medium top speed, due to its heavy weight. It is very durable, and has outstanding off-road capabilities, mainly because of high ground clearance, unusual width, and suspension. It can climb very steep gradients due to its standard low-range gearbox, and does not roll, due to the low center of gravity. Because of the low-end torque and acceleration, its engine seems large, especially in first and second gear, and is quite quick for such a large, heavy truck, it is widely assumed that the Patriot has a high-displacement V8. Although it is powerful, caution should be used when driving over vehicles as the Patriot has a tendency to roll over and catch fire . It should also be noted that the Patriot has bulletproof windshields, like the Securicar .

In the GTA San Andreas, the performance of this car is very good. It´s the best car for going to the countryside of the game, same as the Huntley. <gallery position="center" spacing="small" widths="270px">
The GTA IV rendition is similar but has some changes. It has become a more refined, civilian vehicle with a powerful V8 engine, capable of propelling it to 137 mph (220 kmh), making it 43 mph slower than the rival Huntley Sport. Though it lacks the Cavalcade's top speed, the Patriot easily outmaneuvers it and accelerates faster. The Patriot is heavy, but handles reasonably well owing to solid suspension and low profile wheels. With higher ground clearance than any other vehicle, the Patriot can practically drive over most small objects including cars and fences. It is extremely durable and as a result is able to soak up bullets and crashes and keep going. With careful manipulation of its strong high rev range and four wheel drive system, the Patriot can be an excellent vehicle for evading police pursuit.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online
This behemoth is very safe. In a crash, both the player and others are well protected as opposed to many other road vehicles. It should be noted that pedestrian drivers die much more easily in collisions, not just by the collision forces, but by the vehicle catching fire. Most vehicles will hit under the bumper and thus heavily reducing forces on occupants, so front, side and rear collisions have a medium to low chance of killing an occupant. Its boxy design may cause it to rest on its side or even worse, roof. Moreover, even when in the vehicle, the occupants fare well, albeit with minor injuries. In fact it is so well that with most collisions the driver will just drive away, unlike other drivers in similar situations. And there is a very low chance of windshield ejection due to the small windshield. This is by far one of the safest civilian vehicles out there, but again doesn't score a 100% in safety due to poor accident avoidance.

Variants
The off-road performance of GTA IV's Patriot is, as expected, excellent, with high ground clearance, good approach and departure angles, and the engine has enough power to pull the car up steep, sandy hills without trouble. The Patriot is also very much capable of literally running over smaller vehicles, which makes it an excellent choice when being chased by small police cruisers. Like many heavy duty trucks, its engine lid is hinged to the front, and will not fly off if an impact dislodges it.

Latest revision as of 22:15, 16 April 2024

The original and best way to invite the loathing of every liberal and peacenik on the interstate, the Patriot is three tons of solid liberty coming straight out of the days when you could still afford a tank of gas.

The Patriot is a recurring four-door SUV (formerly a military vehicle) that has appeared in almost every Grand Theft Auto games since Grand Theft Auto III. It is manufactured by Mammoth in the HD Universe.

Design

In general, the Patriot is depicted as a large SUV, employed by both the military and civilians, meant to parody the Hummer lineup, as well as its military counterpart, the AM General HMMWV.

3D Universe

In Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the Patriot resembles a Hummer H1 and is popular as a civilian SUV, often found in Portland and Staunton Island. Patriots come with heavy-duty bumper defenses and may spawn with four different bed configurations: Standard, with roll bars, with a small bed cover and a large bed cover. The vehicle is seen in a variety of primary colors, with secondary-colored defenses, handles, roll bars and window trim (set to different shades of grey).

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Patriot resembles an unarmed AM General HMMWV, and is reserved for the military, reflecting the adoption of the HMMWV at the time and the civilian Hummer having yet to gain the popularity that it would in later years.

The design of the Patriot undergoes only minor cosmetic changes compared to the GTA III model, being the side steps, horizontal door handles and amber lights on the rear bumper. The GTA San Andreas rendition, however, features significant modifications on the body which present the Patriot as a more rugged, off-road vehicle, with a shortened truck bed, slanting A and C pillars, a vehicle snorkel (which unfortunately does not allow the truck to wade in water), and redesigned front and rear fascia.

During development, the Patriot in GTA III was previously known as the "Hum Vee", after the HMMWV's "Humvee" nickname. The Hum Vee differs from the Patriot in its particularly low ground clearance, and in the front of the vehicle being more similar to the real-life Humvees.

Grand Theft Auto IV

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Patriot, adopting the Mammoth brand, is now designed as a luxury SUV, based on the GMT800 2003-2006 Hummer H2, with minor alterations such as the tail lights, and no spare tire on the trunk; the grille design is similar to that of a 1987-1990 Dodge Caravan.

On the rear, a single compartment door can be seen holding the license plate, just between the vertical tail lights. A large plastic rear bumper protects the rear end, with a "MAMMOTH" texturing on it.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

The Patriot is depicted with two different design, depending of the platform:

  • In the Nintendo DS version, the Patriot is depicted as a two-door, pickup truck-like body style, similar to a 2-door Hummer H1 pickup truck, complete with a permanent rear canvas covering over its extended bed. This marks the first time in the series the Patriot is depicted in this form.
  • In the PSP and iOS, the Patriot assumes a design similar to the GTA IV rendition, adopting the four-door layout.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

The Patriot in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online has an identical exterior design to the Patriot featured in GTA IV, and retains most of the modification parts, although the American flag decal is absent completely.

The Patriot can assign a secondary color, which is applied on the door handles, while the primary color affects the interior stitching. The vehicle gains an updated rim design, which is similar to the "Supernova" SUV rims found in Los Santos Customs.

Performance

3D Universe

Grand Theft Auto IV

The Patriot appears to be powered by a V8 engine, judging by the cover, coupled in a 4-speed gearbox in a front engine, all wheel drive layout. Its engine sound is shared with that of the Voodoo.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

Originally, the Patriot had the same transversely-mounted V8 cover from its previous iteration. After the update mentioned above, it now has a longitudinally-mounted double-cam Inline-4 with throttle bodies on the intake manifold, to match with the engine model from its stretch variant.

Description

In Grand Theft Auto IV, a modified variant of the Patriot is operated by the National Office of Security Enforcement, and features a unique livery and performance upgrades in speed and ramming power - it is known for its excessive ramming capabilities and power.

(Rear quarter view)
Description

The Patriot Stretch is a stretch limousine variant of the Patriot added as part of the After Hours update. The stretch comes complete with Gunrunning liveries and additional modification parts, the latter of which are also available for the regular Patriot as part of the same update.

Special Variants

3D Universe

  • In Grand Theft Auto III, a bulletproof variant of the Patriot may be obtained after successfully driving Ray Machowski to safety during "Marked Man". Besides being impervious to bullets, the truck is otherwise similar in every way to a conventional Patriot.

HD Universe

  • Playboy X owns a Patriot with a distinctive yellow paintjob. This vehicle can be seen in most Playboy's missions that involves himself.
  • A Patriot is also requested as one of Stevie's car thefts. This vehicle has the same paintjob as Playboy's, but with patriotic decals on its sides. As a new Patriot will spawn again, the player can save one before delivering another to Stevie.

In GTA V, a unique military Patriot-based ATV is seen on a Warstock Cache & Carry advertisement. It cannot be found anywhere in the game.

Prominent Appearances in Missions

Grand Theft Auto III

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

  • A Volatile Situation - Some Sindacco members drive a Patriot during the third wave attack of the mission. It has a unique dark brown paintjob and can be obtained after killing them, but in order to obtain it, care must be taken to park it far enough from the casino before proceeding with the mission.
  • Contra-Banned - A pink one with a black roof used by Miguel and the Colombians appears during the drug deal. The truck itself must be driven to Salvatore's arranged garage. It can be obtained by destroying it in a garage, although this results in the failure of the mission.
  • False Idols - DB-P used a bullet-proof one during the mission. Toni must destroy the car when it is on the way to Liberty Tree. It can be obtained by pushing the wreck to the garage.
  • Car-azy Car Give Away - The Patriot is one of the sixteen vehicles wanted by Love Media for their Car-azy Car Give Away.
  • 9mm Mayhem - Used by the Yardies members as a getaway vehicle after destroying nine targets, with one gunner in the back.
  • AWOL Angel - Used by the military soldiers as a getaway vehicle after destroying six targets, with two gunners in the back.

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • Playboy X's Patriot appears in some of his missions, often being driven by Niko Bellic.
  • Stevie's Car Thefts - The Patriot is one of the 30 vehicles wanted by the Stevie's Car Thefts in the side-mission of the same name.
  • Exotic Exports - The Patriot is one of the ten vehicles wanted by the Exotic Exports side-mission.

After the completion of Conduct Unbecoming, the Patriot located in front of the Barracks will no longer be available for the rest of the game, leaving only one Patriot inside the base.

Trivia

General

Patriot-MH2-Bloodhounds-front

A Bloodhound Patriot in Manhunt 2. (Rear quarter view)

  • The name "Patriot" refers to how the Hummer H1 was introduced after the military M998 Humvee gained popularity with the lay American public, as it featured predominantly in media coverage of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War.
  • In Manhunt 2, a Bloodhounds variant of the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City rendition of the Patriot appears during the opening scene of "Most Wanted".
  • Despite being thought to be a military vehicle in the 3D Universe, the player cannot do Vigilante missions in the car.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

  • The Patriot cannot be resprayed in a Pay n' Spray, although it can be repaired.
  • A civilian version of the Patriot was originally suppose to appear in the game, but was dropped during development.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

  • The Patriot cannot be repaired at a Pay n' Spray.
  • Despite the fact that this variant of the Patriot features multiple color schemes in the game files, it only ever spawns with the standard dark army green color, as it has a set texture. However, the 'real' primary color can be noticed by crashing the vehicle and paying attention to the color of the crash particles. This is a characteristic shared with the ammo truck variant of the Barracks OL, the Gang Rancher and the Polaris V8.

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • If the hood falls off, the headlights will still work.
  • If the Patriot is resprayed multiple times, it will lock between gray and dark blue and cannot be resprayed to another color.
Patriot-GTACW-papercraft-0

A papercraft model of the Patriot, available for download on the Rockstar Games Social Club website.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • The front axle of the Patriot does not appear to incorporate a differential or driveshaft, despite all 4 wheels being driven.
  • Patriots that spawn in traffic can either come with four unusable roof lights (as shown above), a front chrome bullbar, or neither of these. None of these additions will affect the Patriot's performance (other than the bullbar possibly protecting the headlights from breaking in crashes), and also cannot be purchased nor modified at any Los Santos Customs.

Grand Theft Auto Online

  • Patriots driven by NPCs have a small radio antenna above the windscreen. When the player enters a Patriot, the antenna disappears.
  • Roof-mounted LED lights can be mounted in Los Santos Customs, however these are not functional.
  • While the stock front bumper has functioning yellow lights (that light up at night time), the custom ones do not.

Bugs/Glitches

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • Patriots may spawn with no step-sides and no stock exhaust, or both combinations of exhausts and step sides. This issue may be also present on those purchased in GTA Online at Southern San Andreas Super Autos. This bug is caused due to the vehicle's lack of FLAG_EXTRAS_REQUIRE in vehicles.meta; the Patriot's exhausts and step-sides are found as separate combinations of extra components, causing them to clash without this flag, or spawn completely missing.
    • This issue can be fixed in GTA Online by entering a Los Santos Customs, selecting any of the custom short exhausts and then, selecting the stock option again.
  • The front bullbar extra hinges with the hood upon opening, causing it to clip through the front bumper, as the bumper itself is not part of the hood.
  • The Patriot also received incorrect dirt mapping on the rear compartment on one of the lower LoDs, causing small squares of dirt to be applied on the Patriot's rear at a distance when the vehicle is dirty, this was likely a unintentional mistake by Rockstar when updating the vehicle for After Hours.
  • The rear bumper upgrades added with the new model in After Hours are misaligned to the right.
  • As of the After Hours update, driving a Patriot spawned with accessories (i.e. bullbar, roof lights) into Los Santos Customs removes the accessories, leaving a "plain" Patriot.
