The Perennial is a station wagon and minivan in Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto IV (and its episodes) and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. It is manufactured by Dinka in the HD Universe.

Influence[]

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

The car's design resembles a 1962–69 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Wagon, with the front and tail lights taken from the Austin A40 Farina Mark I. The Perennial also seems to be inspired by a plethora of wagons from the 1960s, such as the 1970–86 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Fiat 1100 R Familiare, Peugeot 404, or Peugeot 504 wagon.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories[]

The car assumes a slightly newer and leaner model that mostly resembles the seventh-generation Ford Country Squire, specifically the 1970 model, judging by the shape of the grille, the hood, and the overall shape of the car, but retains elements of previous iterations of the car in the rear.

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Perennial now features a modern design, being primarily based on the third generation Honda Odyssey with major influence from the second generation Honda Stream RSZ, as seen in the front fascia, front bumper, side skirts, and A-pillar. The bonnet and the side profile, albeit with the trim moved up, are reminiscent of the eighth-generation US Honda Civic sedan, while the headlights, grille, and tail light layout are taken from the eighth-generation Honda Civic Type R hatchback. The tail lights may also have been influenced by the Subaru Alcyone SVX. The C-pillar and the rear windshield are similar to those from the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. It is the only vehicle in GTA IV that features a fully glassed roof, which is very reminiscent of the Renault Avantime. Some additional elements are taken from the second-generation Toyota Sienna.

Design[]

3D Universe[]

In Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the vehicle remained mostly the same, with certain differences in terms of details:

  • The GTA III rendition assumes a rather basic design, where the lower area features a flat gray bumper with a license plate in the center, while the upper area is predominated by a mesh grille with two horizontal dividers and five vertical ones, together with gray headlight housings beside it, with circular main lights on the upper halves and vertical turn signals on the lower halves. The sides have the corresponding doors with gray/silver handles and two mirror wings on the front doors, while the cabin area has relatively large windows and a flat roof. The rear is mostly occupied by a large compartment door with a gray/silver section at the bottom and what looks like a handle below the window, while the sections beside it have vertical tail lights split between the upper indicators and the lower main/brake lights. A flat bumper with a central license plate is seen at the bottom, with a rounded moulding for the passenger-side exhaust pipe. The vehicle is seen in a variety of single colors for the body.
  • The GTA Vice City rendition retains most of the features from GTA III but the grille appears to have four horizontal and six vertical separations, while the hood features a distinctive line in the center. The cabin area remains the same, but there are additional separations on the windows, and a gray/silver luggage rack may appear on the rear portion of the roof. On the rear, the tail lights gain an additional detail on the middle that seems to contain a small circular unit. Again, the vehicle is seen in a variety of single colors for the body.
  • The GTA San Andreas rendition looks more like its real-life counterpart when compared to the GTA III or GTA Vice City renditions. The bumper seems to have a pointed shape in the center, and the grille has three protruding horizontal separations (likely due to them being 3D details opposed to the 2D texture from the previous renditions). The headlights are also less convex and are surrounded by gray/silver trim, while the turn signals are rotated to a horizontal position. The sides of the vehicle have chrome side moldings on its upper body and a fuel cap on the rear left quarter, while the inner window pillars and the optional luggage rack on the roof are retained from the GTA Vice City rendition. The rear of the car is mostly identical to its two previous renditions, but the tail lights consist of single red units, while the exhaust pipe is located below the rear bumper rather than within. The vehicle is seen in a variety of primary colors for the body and secondary colors for the roof, the latter unable to be changed at TransFender.

In Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, this model assumes a similar design to previous renditions, but the front bumper seems to be larger and has concave formations on the upper area, while the grille spans the whole width of the car and houses square headlights. The windows on the rear compartment area are slightly smaller than the windshield and door windows, while the roof has two gray/silver luggage bars on the rear portion. The rear end is mostly identical to its previous iterations, but the turn indicators are smaller. Both renditions can spawn in a variety of primary colors applied on the body, while the secondary color is applied on most of the sides.

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

The front of the vehicle is predominated by a trapezium-shaped lower mesh grille with a central number plate mounted over it, while the portions beside the lower grille house a set of fog lamps that work in conjunction with the engine. Above the bumper area, there is a narrow upper mesh grille that is about the same width as the upper edge of the lower grille, which is split by a central panel finished in black and bearing the manufacturer logo, while the portions beside it are occupied by wide headlights and small outer indicators, which have and upswept shape on the lower edges. The hood is relatively simple in design and has elevated formations on the outer edges, leading towards each side of the windscreen.

The sides of the vehicle are relatively simple in terms of design, with protruding accent lines passing through the doors and small side skirts at the bottom, along with silver/chrome door handles located below the waist lines. The greenhouse area makes use of silver/chrome trim around the side windows and black inner separations, while the windshield and rear window make use of black trim. A fully glassed roof is seen spanning most of the roof area, leaving a smaller solid portion for the aerial/antenna and the spoiler.

The rear of the vehicle features a large compartment door with the manufacturer badge below the window, "MPV AW" badges on the driver side, and silver "PERENNIAL" badging on the passenger side, along with a dedicated section for the number plate. There is a wide tail light cluster with black trim around, which is split between a central section containing the central brake light and two reverse lights beside it, two outer sections containing the inner brake and outer main lights, and two smaller indicators placed on the rear quarters of the vehicle. The bumper area houses a grey section in the centre and two small exhausts beside it.

The Perennial is equipped with a GPS system with a female voice, but only if the player leaves the "selected cars" (default) option in the audio menu. The Perennial comes with tinted windows by default.

The vehicle spawns in a variety of single colors on the bodywork, and uses seven-spoke rims with medium-profile tyres.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars[]

The Perennial in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars assumes the design of its previous iterations, depending on the platform: the Nintendo DS rendition appears to resemble a 3D Universe rendition, while the PSP and iOS version is more modern and resembles the GTA IV rendition.

Performance[]

3D Universe[]

The underpowered, front-wheel drive Perennial is quite sluggish. Acceleration is highly lacking, as is speed, but the handling is responsive, but quite heavy, and is prone to oversteer and rolling. It is, however, quite sturdy, and can withstand significant damage before catching fire and exploding. The Perennial is also easy to ram off roads, especially with large, fast vehicles such as the Fire Truck and the Barracks OL.

The Perennial uses a petrol engine and a five-speed gearbox. It uses a low-revving and noisy engine from cars such as the Romero's Hearse and the GTA San Andreas version of the Greenwood.

HD Universe[]

The Perennial "MPV AW" vastly improves in performance. Gone is the 3D Universe's FWD layout, ditched in favor of an RWD layout. Acceleration is average, with a reasonable top speed. Handling is also upgraded significantly, as the Perennial no longer flops about on the road, but keeps steady. The suspension is quite firm for a vehicle of this size, and aides high-speed cornering. Braking is average. Crash deformation is below average, and as such the Perennial cannot sustain much damage before being un-drivable.

The Perennial uses a twin-cam Inline-4 engine and a 5-speed gearbox. It uses a mid-revving and smooth engine sound, shared with vehicles such as the Landstalker and the Rebla.

Trivia[]

3D Universe[]

  • According to the Capital Autos website, the Perennial in GTA III was known as the "Maurice" early during the development of the game.
  • In GTA Vice City Stories, during the mission Truck Stop, a fire-proof and pop-proof Perennial is available.
  • In GTA San Andreas, the Ballas destroy Big Smoke's Perennial by shooting the gas tank. The fuel cap of the Perennial is located on the driver's side, but somehow the Ballas destroy the vehicle by shooting at the opposite side.

HD Universe[]

  • The LCPD police radio refers to the Perennial as an "MPV".
  • When selecting a vehicle in GTA IV multiplayer races, it is only possible to select the FlyUS version of the Perennial, rather than the civilian version, whereas the Feroci is available as civilian only.
