Random Pickable Objects are special objects featured only in Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Description[]

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

The Random Pickable Objects are different objects that can be picked up by the player and thrown. They are first introduced in the mission Bull in a China Shop, and are generally the same size as the character's hand.

Most objects can be held by NPCs, who will drop them when bumped into or spooked. Some items such as books cannot be picked up when dropped by NPCs, and smaller items such as lit cigarettes may be too small to easily notice.

Most objects persist until the player leaves the area, or when too many objects are spawned. Taking objects out of their spawn area can make them disappear from the environment/player's grasp.

The following is a list of objects that can be picked up and used as thrown items:

Performance[]

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

Although objects can vastly differ amongst each other, their performance is about the same when thrown at an NPC or objects within the environment. The thrown object deals little damage but can easily knock over pedestrians. It can be picked up again as long as the object is not breakable. Some objects have enough force when thrown to damage the environment, such as shattering certain windows and cracking vehicle windshields. This can lead to instances where items such as edible burgers are capable of cracking windshields, although the damage caused appears to be superficial. It should be noted that certain objects, such as the common coffee cup dropped by NPCs, appear to be unable to cause aesthetic damage.

Throwing objects at occupied vehicles, walls or interactive decorations does not attract the law, regardless of damage caused. Throwing objects at people or police can trigger a one-star wanted level, immediately in the latter case. Sometimes, throwing an object into a group of gang members or police officers will likely cause them to react to the situation (fighting back or causing a wanted level, respectively). Pickable objects are also capable of causing gas canisters to explode, with some persistence. Although it is not usually the case, rarely these explosions can trigger a one-star wanted level.

Locations[]

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

Pickable Objects can be found across Liberty City and are fairly common among pedestrians and businesses. They can also be in unexpected places, leading to a sense of realism. They can be picked up by pressing LB (XB360 and XB1)/PS3 L1 (PS3/PS4)/E (PC) when near an object. Once picked up, it can be aimed and thrown. Areas where such objects can commonly be found are:

  • On streets and alleyways.
  • Near rivers.
  • Construction areas.
  • Scrapyards and abandoned areas (Alderney Casino, Sprunk Factory, etc).
  • Any of the food vendors and business outlets.
  • Near Vending Machines. Players can also purchase a soda drink and pick up the can after it's thrown.
  • Carried randomly by NPCs. The player has to push them to make them drop them (or just sprint right into them). Some items such as books cannot be picked up when dropped by NPCs, and smaller items such as lit cigarettes may be too small to easily notice.
  • Sometimes dropped by car drivers. Objects dropped can vary between wrappers, soda cans and coffee cups.

Trivia[]

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

  • Taking the Mobile Phone while carrying an object will make it disappear from the inventory for some reason. The same happens when entering a vehicle.
  • Occasionally, dropped or thrown Bean Machine coffee cups will persist and never despawn. Although this causes no issues with gameplay, it can be fixed by reloading the save.
  • If a player is quick enough, they can use the same method to pick up thrown grenades. Speed is vital, as the timer does not stop when picked up.
  • Although it isn't normally possible to pick up cash as an object, if the player throws cash toward a busker, the cash dropped becomes an object. If the player then shoots the object, they will be able to pick it up and use it like any other. This glitch only works with buskers, as money dropped for the homeless and migrants spawns as actual money. (Tested on Xbox 360).
  • In Multiplayer, players normally cannot pick up any objects; however, they can pick up objects inside interiors. Throwing them at a player only inflicts minimal damage and does not knock them down.
  • On very rare occasions, when a cop arrests an NPC at the same moment they start drawing out their weapon, they will drop it in the process. The dropped weapon will not have an orange aura. If the player then presses the pick up button, it will cause the player to pick up the weapon like an object. The major difference in this case is instead of being able to throw the object, it adds the weapon/ammo to the inventory. This method does not seem to work with player-dropped weapons, including melee ones. This could be a remnant of a cut mechanic where the player would have to pick up each weapon physically to collect its ammunition.
  • Certain objects require persistence to pick up, often causing the player to walk in circles.
