Respect encompasses two different gang-based systems in Grand Theft Auto 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Grand Theft Auto 2

In Grand Theft Auto 2, respect is integral to the game's gang system, determining which gang the player way work with and how gang members may react to the player. This alludes to a phrase in GTA2, "Respect is Everything", which indicates the importance of respect in gameplay.

As three gangs reside in each district of Anywhere City, the game's HUD produces a respect meter of the district's three gangs, which are all neutral to the player when the player begins. Respect towards the gangs may increase or decrease depending on the actions of the player:

  • A gang's respect will rise when the player completes one of its missions or kills members of its opposing gangs.
  • A gang's respect will drop when the player fails one of its missions or kills its own gang members.

Gangs which respect to the player are negative will have members that are hostile to the player, firing weapons at the player if they enter their territories. In addition, players will not be able to receive missions from hostile gangs, as the gangs naturally view the player unfavorably and refuse to associate themselves with the player.

GTA San Andreas

In GTA San Andreas, respect, or "street cred" is an element indicating how inclined your gang is to help you. The more respect you have, the more gang members you can recruit to tend to your personal interests. Raising your respect is straight-forward; doing missions and murdering rival gang members and police officers are the most common ways. Respect also affects Sex Appeal.

Up to seven gang members can be recruited. This will not happen until you have roughly 80% of your respect meter full.
