That's another funeral you ran away from, fool. Just like Brian's.
Sweet Johnson meeting his brother for the first time in 5 years

Sweet & Kendl is a mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas given to protagonist Carl Johnson by Big Smoke. The mission Sweet & Kendl triggers automatically after Big Smoke (mission).

Mission

Big Smoke and Carl arrive at the cemetery in Vinewood, and are greeted by Kendl, Carl's sister, whilst fellow gang member Ryder, looks on. Carl and Sweet, Carl's brother, meet, but Sweet is still hostile towards his brother, after the death of their younger brother Brian in 1987. Kendl then decides to leave and meet her boyfriend Cesar Vialpando, the leader of the rival gang Varrios Los Aztecas, but is temporarily stopped by Sweet who argues with her about Cesar. After Kendl leaves, Sweet points out the graves of Tony, Big Devil, and Little Devil, before Carl, Sweet, Smoke, and Ryder decide to return to Grove Street. Some Ballas perform a drive-by shooting and destroy Smoke's Perennial, with the four stealing four BMX bikes and riding to a car park under a freeway at Mulholland Intersection, evading the pursuing Ballas in their Voodoo. Sweet decides that the group should split up and Sweet heads off in a different direction with the Ballas following, allowing Carl, Smoke, and Ryder to ride away in safety until they get to a freeway bordering Idlewood, where the Ballas re-appear and chase them back to Grove Street in Ganton. Carl, Ryder, and Smoke both escape and arrive back in Ganton shortly after Sweet arrives, with Carl announcing his intention is to stay in Los Santos and to help the Grove Street Families, before leaving the group and entering the Johnson House.

Mission objectives

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Get on the bike
  • Follow Sweet
  • Follow Ryder

Tips

  • Keep Carl's speed up by tapping the the accelerate button. If the player slows down after the gang split up, the Voodoo the Ballas are driving may attack Carl.

Reward

The reward for completing this mission is an increase in respect and the mission Ryder is unlocked. The player can now save their game at the Johnson House in Grove Street. Also, completing this mission opens access to the BMX odd jobs.

After the mission

As Carl discovers, a lot has changed around San Andreas during the past five years:

  • A devastating earthquake has struck San Andras, with travel disruption across the state until the road bridges are repaired.
  • Gang warfare and heavy drug dealing is on the rise in San Andreas. Carl receives a phone call from Sweet, who explains that Grove Street has lost its power and while the Seville Boulevard Families and the Temple Drive Families - who were once allied with the Grove Street Families - are "beefing" and ended up spitting into their own gangs, the Ballas and Vagos are taking over San Andreas.

Transcript

Transcript
Camera pans across Vinewood Cemetery. Big Smoke and Carl Johnson walk up to Carl's siblings and Ryder, who have just finished the funeral.
Big Smoke: I've missed you these past 5 years man, they're gonna be real happy to see you. Hey, what's up, y'all? Look who I found hanging around.
Kendl: Carl, hey, good to see you.
Kendl hugs CJ.
CJ: I can't believe she's gone, man.
Sweet: That's another funeral you ran away from, fool, just like Brian's.
CJ: Hey, she was my Momma too.
Sweet: Not for the past 5 years she wasn't, ni**a!
Kendl starts walking away.
Sweet: And where the fuck you think you're going?
Kendl: What? Get out my face, I'm going to see Cesar.
Sweet: The hell you are, girl! You ain't messin' with them eses, you know we we beefing - they ain't nothin' but low lives.
Kendl: Look, I love him, what the fuck are you?!
Sweet: At least I got principles.
Kendl: Oh, and I guess that makes you an upstanding American. Carl, tell him!
Sweet: Carl won't tell me shit, bitch.
CJ: As long as he treat her right. Disrespect you, and he's dead.
Sweet: How the hell you gonna say that?! Like it's any business of yours!
Kendl: Fuck you Sweet.
CJ: Aw, shit. Here we go again.
Sweet: This shit's real fucked up! Everything!
CJ: What 'chu mean?
Sweet: What, apart from your mother being dead? Things are going real bad. Here, let me show you, running man. Tony's buried over there, Little Devil over there, and Big Devil over there! Man, it's just crazy: everybody just blast on fools first, then ask questions second.
CJ, Sweet, Big Smoke and Ryder walk towards Big Smoke's Perennial. Suddenly, some Ballas speed around the corner in a pink Voodoo.
Ryder: Ballas! Drive-by, incoming!
Ballas perform a Drive-By Shooting as Ryder and CJ dive out of harm's way while Sweet and Big Smoke return fire at the Ballas. Big Smoke's Perennial is blown up by the Ballas before they drive away.
Big Smoke: Awww, motherfucker, my car!!
CJ, Sweet, Smoke and Ryder jump onto some bikes parked across the street from the cemetery.
Sweet: We gotta get back to the hood, things are too crazy around here. Grab a bike and pedal, even you ain't forgotten that! Follow my lead.
CJ, Sweet, Big Smoke and Ryder ride their bikes back to Grove Street whilst being chased by the Ballas in the Voodoo.
Sweet: Takes you back some, huh, CJ? Yeah!
CJ: Things has changed around here!
Sweet: CJ, watch your back 'round here, man.
CJ: How'd it get so bad? I thought this was Families' turf?
Sweet: Yeah, it's Temple Drive Families - we don't roll with them no more.
CJ, Sweet, Big Smoke and Ryder get to the parking lot under the Mulholland Intersection.
Sweet: Shit! A Ballas car is onto us! Split up!
Sweet separates from the group with the Ballas car chasing after him.
Ryder: Keep up, motherfucker!
CJ, Ryder and Big Smoke continue their way to Grove Street.
Ryder: You're just a liability, CJ! Why'd you bother coming back?
Big Smoke: Straight back into the game, right dog? Was it this bad before you left? East Coast got you all thinned out, holmes.
CJ, Ryder and Big Smoke return to Groove Street, where Sweet joins them.
Ryder: I got with them motherfuckers though - showed them ni**az who's gangsta. Ryder, ni**a!
Sweet: So when you leaving, Carl?
CJ: I ain't sure. Thought I might stay. Things is fucked up.
Sweet: Well, the last thing we need is your help.
CJ: Aw man, I won't let you down, I swear.
Sweet: Hey, we're gonna call up some hood rats and chill the hell out. You want some?
CJ: Nah, I got a whole lot going on, I'm tired, I'll catch you later.
Big Smoke: Hey yo, just drop in, we all hanging out.
Ryder: Yeah, and get yourself some colors, fool. And a haircut - it's embarrassing to be seen with you!
Sweet, Big Smoke and Ryder ride away and CJ enters the Johnson House.

Trivia

  • If the player destroys the Ballas' Voodoo before the cutscene under the Mulholland Intersection, Sweet won't split from the rest of the gang and the Voodoo won't reappear in Idlewood.
  • If the player steals a car instead of taking the BMX bike, during the ending cutscene in Ganton, Carl won't be sitting on the bike talking with Sweet, Smoke and Ryder, but will be standing and talking with them instead, and the vehicle he used will be parked nearby.
    • During the final cutscene, Ryder can be seen riding his bike around the cul-de-sac and doing wheelies while Big Smoke and Sweet talk to Carl. If the player used a car during the chase and left it sitting in the middle of the Grove Street cul-de-sac, Ryder will crash through the vehicle quite violently and it will get pushed away very easily, as if it was very light. A video of this can be seen here.
  • If the player destroys the Ballas' Voodoo without killing the driver and passenger, they might steal another car to continue chasing the quartet.
  • Strangely, if the Ballas inside the Voodoo start shooting around normal Ballas' territory they will become hostile towards the Ballas in the Voodoo, even though they are in the same gang. A video of this can be seen here.
  • Ryder, Sweet, and Big Smoke cannot be knocked off their bikes.
  • If the player saves and reloads their game after this mission, their save file will read that Big Smoke was the last completed mission. This is most likely a glitch.
  • GTA V's mission "Hood Safari" makes a subtle reference to this mission, where the player can see three men riding away from Grove Street on bicycles. These men resemble Carl, Big Smoke and Ryder.
  • No matter where the player goes during this mission, even into locked areas, the Ballas will still follow Carl, continuously respawning behind the player and chasing him. A video of this can be seen here.
  • Not counting the player, in the whole chase, Ryder will always be on the first position, Sweet on second and Big Smoke on last position.
