"Dimitri turned on me, not the other way around. America made him greedy. Dimitri will turn on you as shall discover this."
Mikhail Faustin

The Master and the Molotov is the first mission in Grand Theft Auto IV given to protagonist Niko Bellic by Dimitri Rascalov from the Hove Beach district of Broker, Liberty City. This mission introduces the fire escape stairs to the player.

The Petrovic Family are threatening to kill Dimitri if his leader, Mikhail Faustin is not killed soon. Niko is sent by Dimitri to kill Faustin because Faustin's recklessness is getting out of control. Kenny Petrovic also wants revenge on Mikhail for ordering the killing of his son Lenny and destroying his garage in Bohan. Dimitri explains that he was able to negotiate with Petrovic so that only Faustin would be killed. Dimitri tells Petrovic that Niko was just a hired gun, and Petrovic is willing to spare Niko on the condition that Niko kills Faustin himself.

Niko goes to the Perestroika club, where, after a heated argument, Faustin sends multiple of his goons to try and stop Niko while he tries to escape. The player must battle several of Faustin's men and climb a fire escape outside and up to the roof where Faustin is hiding. Faustin tells Niko that Dimitri will betray Niko like Niko betrayed him, and that America made Dimitri greedy. Niko ignores this and shoots Faustin, who falls off the roof to his death. Niko calls Dimitri and tells him that Faustin is dead. Dimitri tells him that he did the right thing and that he will talk to Petrovic about Faustin's death.

Mission objectives

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Get to Faustin's club.
  • Let Faustin enter Perestroika.
  • Confront Faustin and defeat his guards, then attack him.
  • If Faustin escapes from the bar, chase and kill him.

  • Niko will call Dimitri to confirm Faustin's death. Dimitri hopes it will please Petrovic.

Liberty Tree Newspaper

"A nightclub owner is dead and the beachside communities of east Broker are in panic after another violent shootout last night. Patrons at the Russian-themed Perestroika night club and cabaret were horrified when an argument between the owner and a man he appeared to know ended in murder. The owner, Mikhail Faustin, 45, was killed along with several accomplices whose names have not yet been released by police. The assailant escaped. Eye witnesses described a dark-haired European man in his late twenties or early 30s of average height and build, which does not narrow it down that much."

"The mostly Russian community of Hove Beach is in shock. Mr. Faustin was a well known local figure, a colorful man who ran one of the best dinner clubs in the area. A lover of life, he leaves a wife and daughter."

GTA 4 - Mission 23 - The Master and the Molotov (1080p)

  • There is a flying rat behind the Perestroika sign.
  • It is possible to shoot Faustin while he is hiding behind the bar, but doing so will just play the cutscene where Faustin runs away.
  • Faustin's statement while Niko is pursuing him that Rascalov will turn on Bellic is actually true; in fact, Niko discovered that Faustin was telling the truth in the very next mission.
  • The name of this mission is a reference to the novel The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.
  • When Faustin falls to his death, he will scream, but not in his own voice; in place of Faustin's voice is a random scream used by NPC's.
  • If Niko has no armor when he arrives at Perestroika, Dimitri will text him to say that he has left some protection around the side of the club, and an armor pickup can be found behind the dumpster.
  • After this mission, Molotov Cocktails are available from the gun shops, hence the name "The Master and the Molotov".
  • Similar to Vlad's death, this is the only time Mikhail Faustin appears outside of cutscenes.
  • It is possible to kill Faustin before he reaches the rooftop where the assassination occurs. This will require a Rocket Launcher or a well placed grenade can blast him to death at any point on his route. For the rocket launcher method, when the first door of the club is entered, go to the left and shoot the door with gunfire to allow people to flee and open the door, you should now be able to see the red arrow of Mikhail. When ready, aim the wall above Mikhail and fire, the explosion should be powerful enough to kill him in one hit. Complete the mission. Alternatively, keep shooting at him as he climbs the stairs onto the roof. He will stop occasionally to shoot at Niko with his Micro SMG.
  • Even though this mission is given by Dimitri Rascalov, the stats don't show his progress, the mission instead gives progress to Faustin's mission even though he gets killed in this mission.
  • For some reason, the weather in this mission will always be with thunder and heavy rain, the player may change this using cheats. This is probably to give the mission a sad climate, due to Niko killing Faustin without knowing that Dimitri will set him up.
  • After this mission, Little Jacob cannot be contacted in anyway, (friendship activities, ability, jobs) but he will automatically call Niko upon starting the next mission.
  • Mikhail will never stand up and shoot you with the Micro-SMG once he is behind the wall on the roof. This is because part of the mission is scripted: once Niko gets to a certain point on the stairs, Mikhail will get up and stand at the middle of the roof with his hands up, dropping his gun. This makes it exceptionally easy to kill him if he's against the wall by using grenades, a molotov or an RPG (provided you have found them). It doesn't make sense, seeing as how he won't shoot anyway, but it's a short funny couple of seconds to see a flying Russian.
    • If you attack Mikhail with your fists while he is at the roof, he will pull out a pistol and start shooting at you.
