Life in Russia
Dimitri Rascalov was born in Russia, most likely in Moscow, circa 1969. As a young adult, Dimitri joined the Soviet Army and participated in the Cold War. During his service, Dimitri met another soldier, Mikhail Faustin, and the two befriended, with Faustin would later call Dimitri as his "brother for life". During the war, the two were later spent time in a Serbian prison, with Faustin often protected Dimitri from other inmates who attempted to rape him.
At some point during the early 1980s, Dimitri and Faustin began to be involved in criminal activities, "selling hash to tourists in Red Square". During his criminal career in Russia, Dimitri was convicted of murder at least twice. Eventually, Faustin founded his own crime organization, with Dimitri acting as his right-hand man.
At some point before he and Faustin moved to the United States, Dimitri met a well-known and powerful Russian kingpin, Ray Bulgarin, and the two became friends and associates, with Bulgarin would be known in future as the only associate Dimitri never betrayed.
Life in Liberty City
In the late 1980s, Dimitri, Faustin, Faustin's family and severel associates moved to Liberty City. According to the LCPD, Dimitri managed to move to the USA after he "exploited a loophole in the US immigration treaty".
Dimitri and Faustin settled in Broker and continued their criminal activities in the city. The two began a sort of a truce with a rival Russian Bratva, led under Kenny Petrovic, the most powerful Russian criminal in the city. It is assumed the two Bratvas maintained the truce mainly because Dimitri's cousin dated Petrovic's son, Lenny.
Over the time, Dimitri grew tired of Faustin's leadership, mainly because of Faustin's growing insanity because of heavy drug usage. Dimitri began to plot against his best friend, eager to obtain power, and waited for an opportunity. The LCPD also reported that Dimitri has been making deals with both Petrovic and the Ancelotti crime family.
During his time in Liberty City, Dimitri was arrested in 1998 for extortion, and in 2001 for hijacking.
Events of Grand Theft Auto IV Era
Meeting the Bellic cousins
Vladimir Glebov, who works for Dimitri and Faustin, begins to employ Niko Bellic as Niko cousin Roman is in debt to Vlad. Vlad is eventually killed by Niko after discovering that Vlad had a sexual relationship with Roman's girlfriend Mallorie Bardas.
After Vlad's death, Dimitri sends his associate Andrei to kidnap the Bellic cousins, bringing them to Faustin's mansion. As revealed by both Faustin and Dimitri, Dimitri wanted to kill Niko and Roman, but Mikhail decided to spare them.
At Faustin's basement, Dimitri first encounter Niko and Roman, having gag Roman for crying. Dimitri wakes Niko up (who was put unconscioused by Andrei) by slapping him, before berating Andrei for bringing the Bellic cousins to Faustin's home. Mikhail soon enters the basement, angry at Andrei for bringing Niko and at Dimitri for hiring Andrei, before executing Andrei with a shot to his head.
At Niko's request, Dimitri ungaggs Roman, who begins to shout for help, only to be shot by Faustin, much to Dimitri's dismey. Faustin sends Niko to steal a van full of televisions so they could sell it.
Dimitri untieds Niko, promising him he will take care of Roman while Niko will complete the task. After the both deeds are done, Niko and Dimitri start to work together under Faustin.
Working with Niko
Niko begins to work with Dimitri for Faustin. In their first task together, a pornographic film maker called Joseph Kaplan refuses to pay protection money to Faustin. After a brief arguement with Faustin, Dimitri tells Niko to drive him to The Peep Hole, Joseph's front for making films. At the sex store, Dimitri makes Joseph pay the money after Niko has injured Joseph's friend Brett, before being injured by Dimitri as well. After obtaining the money, Dimitri tells Niko to drive to an underground gun shop, where Dimitri buys him a Micro Uzi.
Dimitri and Niko later arrive to Perestroika, Mikhail's club, to tell Faustin that they are being heavily watched by the LCPD because of their reckless behavior. Faustin, however, believes that someone has ratted them out, thinking that Lenny Petrovic, Kenny's son, is the rat. Faustin sends Niko to eliminate Lenny, despite Dimitri's warnings that Kenny will not take this act kindly, leading to an arguement between Dimitri and Faustin. Niko heads to Lenny's location and kill Petrovic's son. Dimitri soon calls Niko, telling him thathe killed the son of one of the most powerful and dangerous men in the city.
Following Lenny's murder, Dimitri begins to plan his rise to power, including a few meetings with Petrovic, as well being absent during Mikhail's problems with Jason Michaels. Mikhail then decides to deliver another blow to Petrovic, much to Dimitri's dismey, having Niko bring a truck loaded with a bomb to destroy Petrovic's garage, destroying Dimitri's chances to make a truce between Faustin and Petrovic.
Rise to power
Having no other solution, Dimitri and Petrovic decide that Faustin is too dangerous and has to be killed. Dimitri text messages Niko, asking him to meet him at Hove Beach, where he tells him the situation they are facing. Dimitri tells Niko that the only way Petrovic will spare them is by sending Niko kill Faustin, as Niko was just a hired gun, and killed Petrovic's son under Faustin's orders. Niko agrees and kills Faustin on the roof of Perestroika. Moments before his death, Faustin tells Niko that Dimitri has became greedy because of America, and he will betray Niko as well.
After Fasutin's death, Niko, who ignored his last words about Dimitri's future treachery, is called by Dimitri to come to a warehouse next to Broker's docks to get his money for Faustin's assassination. Niko is met by Dimitri, who begin to question Niko on his jobs prior to moving to Liberty City, revealing himself to be a friend of Ray Bulgarin - Niko's enemy and one-time employer. Dimitri and Bulgarin attempt to murder Niko, but end up escaping him and his associate Little Jacob as the LCPD arrive.
Dimitri has his men burning down the Bellic cousins' apartment and business, forcing Niko and Roman out of Broker to Bohan. Niko later receives a phone call from Dimitri, who reveals Niko his desire for power to be his reason for betrayal.
