Ever since the Grand Theft Auto series introduced armed vehicles, these also introduced Vehicle Mounted Weapons. Vehicle mounted weapons act similarly to most regular Weapons, except that these are usually stronger, easier to use and mostly have infinite ammunition.

Overview

A vehicle mounted weapon is represented as any device incorporated into a vehicle where they can be activated to move and shoot any kind of harming element, usually a projectile. Many of these lacks a HUD icon, although in Grand Theft Auto 2 and Grand Theft Auto V vehicle weapons can be selected like any conventional weapons and even appears on-screen (often having a name).

Certain vehicle weapons that appears in most cases are: Tank Cannons, Machine Guns, Mounted Rockets and others. The Water Cannon is not normally considered as a mounted weapon, but its characteristics as an extra feature, the ability to harm a person (albeit very low) and the ability to attract police attention still defines it as a weapon in the GTA universe. There are also weapons that are equipped by civilian vehicles, but the later ones are scripted only in missions (except in Grand Theft Auto 2).

As more vehicles are added over the course of various games, more weapons are available for at least a land, sea or air vehicle, giving the player more offensive/defensive options.

Description

General

As indicated by the name, these weapons are available for the player only in a specified vehicle and, due to the infinite ammunition feature, these can save a large amount of the player's arsenal during prolongued combat situations. In general, there are light firepower weapons suited for rapid engagements, accuracy, close combat and small groups of enemies; and heavy firepower weapons, best suited for numerous groups of enemies and vehicular destruction, where is usually important in the arsenal and, at the same time, the dangerous ones.

Vehicle weapons will disable player-owned weapons for Drive-By Shooting, yet these are not necesary for such cases. If the vehicle is destroyed, the mounted weapon/s becomes unusable afterwards.

On some Grand Theft Auto titles, vehicle weapons require extra commands for aiming (left or right), while in other games, one can aim it with the camera, as if the weapon is the camera. The Rhino is an example of this.

Armed vehicles are usually featured in later storyline missions, usually to give first impressions to the player (i.e. The Rhino on Sir, Yes Sir!), and later, the player can unlock these vehicles with certain methods and achievements. The usual ones are collecting Pickups, completing side missions, among others. The Rhino can be seen and obtained at the maximum Wanted Level in the 3D Universe games.

Gameplay

In the 2D Universe and 3D Universe, aiming the vehicle's weapon is a challenge, due to the lack of a reticle on them, especially in earlier games. All is left to the player' skills to aim and shoot at a target, except in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (the Hunter and the Hydra will have a reticle when selected to first-person view).

In Grand Theft Auto IV, there are no reticles at all, even despite there are two vehicles (only one intended as a combat vehicle), being left again to the player' skills. The same happens to Episodes From Liberty City, despite an exclusive vehicle is armed. For Grand Theft Auto V, however, reticles becomes a prominent feature for each armed vehicle, giving the player more opportunities to use the weapon without losing too much control on it (especially aircraft, as these are very sensitive at damage). The player can choose the usual aiming dot or advanced reticles (which is the same feature for every weapon).

Turrets

Since the Heists Update in Grand Theft Auto Online, vehicle-mounted turrets were added as part of the Technical, the Insurgent Pick-Up and the Valkyrie, which were the first vehicle weapons that can be controlled independently by other players, increasing the driver's focus on the road. This idea is then replicated in the Turreted Limo (added as part of Executive and Other Criminals update) and the Armored Boxville (as part of Import/Export update).

Turrets proved to be efficient, since they can be controlled separately and, like most driver-controlled weapons, have infinite ammunition. While they do not offer much protection against enemies, these weapons are an excellent choice for team-oriented tactics. The player will likely put less effort on aiming and using the vehicle at the same time, but they will likely have to aid their teammates if they want to use turrets at their full potential.

Vehicle Machine Gun

Vehicle Machine Guns are, as the name suggests, machine Guns mounted on a vehicle. The weapon is only available in Grand Theft Auto 2 and they are available at Smith and Heston's scattered around Anywhere City for $25,000. The weapon is effective in Multiplayer Mode, as the other player is unable to jump over the vehicle while they are being fired at.

It can be found in the Fire Truck.

Mounted Machine Gun/Minigun/Cannon
  • Damage:
    • Medium (Normal)
    • High (Cannon)
  • Range:
    • High
    • Medium (P-996 LAZER, Hydra, Rogue)
  • Coverage: Frontal
Mounted Machine Guns or Miniguns are weapons that has average damage and can easily destroy vehicles. Cannons with explosive ammo has a shorter range, but compensates with explosives on it, being able to destroy vehicles very quickly and even without exact aiming.

It can be found in the Oppressor (machine gun option), the Blazer Aqua, the Ruiner 2000, the Ardent, the Nightshark, the APC, the Buzzard Attack Chopper, the Annihilator, the Savage, the P-996 LAZER and the the Hydra.

Depending of the vehicle, some machine guns are seen as basic machine guns or part of it, while others will have the appearance of a M134 Minigun. The ones seen inside the APC has a firing sound not shared with any other machine gun.

Mounted MG
  • Damage: Low
  • Range: Medium
  • Fire Rate: Slow
  • Coverage: ~ 120 degrees
The Mounted MG is a turret that must be operated by a gunner and deal as much damage as a default MG. It takes many shots to be able to disable a vehicle, but can however kill a pedestrian within six shots. Most of its traits, including its caliber, are shared with that of the normal MG.

It can be found on the Dune FAV (default option).

The MG seems to have a camo pattern and a scope is mounted on the railed handguard.

Heavy Machine Gun Turret
  • Damage: Medium
  • Range: High
  • Fire Rate: High
  • Coverage: 360 degrees
The Heavy Machine Gun Turret is a large-caliber weapon that must be operated by a gunner and can deal a great damage against players, NPCs and light armored vehicles. Although the fire rate will vary depending of the vehicle, they still have similar statistics.

It can be found in the Anti-Aircraft Trailer (machine gun option) the Technical, the Technical Custom (MG option), the Technical Aqua, the Half-track, the Armored Boxville, the Insurgent Pick-Up and the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom (MG option)

The guns found on the three Technicals are DShK 12.7mm machine guns and appear to have a high rate of fire, while the guns on the Anti-Aircraft Trailer, the Insurgent Pik-Ups and the Armored Boxville are Browning M2HB .50 caliber machine guns, which seems to fire slower, but have better stopping power. The ones on the Half-track are Oerlikon 20mm machine guns (oddly behaving like .50 caliber guns).

Minigun Turret
  • Damage: Low
  • Range: High
  • Fire Rate: Very High
  • Coverage:
    • Frontal (Weaponized Tampa' stock gun)
    • ~ 120 degrees (Dune FAV's minigun turret)
    • 180 degrees (Valkyrie' side turrets)
    • 360 degrees
The Minigun Turret is a heavy gatling gun that must be operated by a gunner (or driver in the Weaponized Tampa) and deals great damage against players, NPCs and light armored vehicles. Although not as powerful as other similar weapons with large calibers, the fire rate gives it great potential when comes to neutralizing targets. The Weaponized Tampa allows a dual remote minigun turret, which doubles its firepower and increases the general fire rate.

It can be found in the Dune FAV (minigun option), the Weaponized Tampa (both minigun options), the Turreted Limo, the Technical Custom (minigun option), the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom, (minigun option), the Valkyrie and the Valkyrie MOD.0.

Most miniguns are based on the GAU-17/A gatling gun, complete with a flash hider (which is primarily used in the real-life inspiration of the Valkyrie and also the fist vehicle to adopt the model of the gun). The one on the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom is based on the GAU-19/A .50 cal gatling gun. The Dune FAV employs an M134 Minigun fitted with a scope and a lightweight stock.

Rear-Firing Mortar
  • Damage: High
  • Range: Low/Medium
  • Fire Rate: Medium
  • Coverage: Rear
The Rear-Firing Mortar is a twin mortar launcher that fires explosive rounds in a similar way to grenade launchers. Though not very easy to use, it can practically kill targets and destroy unarmored vehicles easily, combined with its variable fire rate from each gun (fired simultaneously or in a sequenced pattern).

It can be found on the Weaponized Tampa (if installed).

Note that the range of the rounds may vary depending of how much the player holds the command button and how fast the vehicle moves.

Mounted Grenade Launcher
  • Damage: High
  • Range: Medium
  • Fire Rate: Slow
  • Coverage: ~ 120 degrees
The Mounted Grenade Launcher is a turret that must be operated by a gunner and deal as much damage as a default Grenade Launcher. It can kill targets and destroy unarmored vehicles easily, though having a limited range and ammo. Most of its traits, including its caliber, are shared with that of the normal Grenade Launcher.

It can be found on the Dune FAV (grenade launcher option).

The Grenade Launcher seems to have a camo pattern, a longer barrel and a straighter stock.

Explosive Gatling Gun
  • Damage: High
  • Range: Low
  • Fire Rate: Medium
  • Coverage: 360 degrees
The Explosive Gatling Gun is a weapon that must be operated by gunners and can practically defeat players, NPCs and unarmored vehicles with a single shot, at the cost of having average effective range (which is lower than minigun turrets).

It can be found in the Valkyrie.

The gatling gun does not seem to be based on any particular weapon. However, it bears some resemblance to the Yak-B 12.7mm machine gun, given the similar four-barrel design and mounting.

Tank Cannon
  • Damage: Very High
  • Range: High
  • Fire Rate: Low
  • Coverage:
    • 360 degrees
    • ~120 degrees (MOC)
The Tank Cannon can fire a powerful explosive projectile that can easily kill enemies and destroy unarmored vehicles in a single shot. However, these have a slow rate of fire and its incorrect use may be harmful for the operator of the weapon.

It can be found in the Rhino Tank, the APC and the Mobile Operations Center, the later as three optional weapons.

The version found in the Rhino Tank appears to be based on the Rheinmetall 120mm gun, a smoothbore tank gun designed for the Leopard 2 series tank (including the main inspiration of the Rhino Tank, the Leopard 2A4).

Mounted Rocket
  • Damage: Very High
  • Range: High
  • Fire Rate: Medium
  • Coverage: Frontal/Homing
The Mounted Rocket is the vehicle variation of the Rocket Launcher, with a high damage and average fire rate. The missiles seen on these vehicles are all radar guided, though it is possible to switch between radar guided and unguided missiles (notice that firing a radar guided missile without locking onto any target will fire an unguided rocket).

The Ruiner 2000, the Anti-Aircraft Trailer, Oppressor, the APC, and the Weaponized Tampa are the only vehicles in free roam that have a limited capacity of rockets, and this was done for balancing reasons, due to the missiles' turning radius, and their range, which are longer than any mounted rocket fired from aircraft or the Homing Launcher.

It can be found in the Anti-Aircraft Trailer (SAM option), the Oppressor (Missile option), the Weaponized Tampa (if installed), the Ruiner 2000, the APC (SAM option), the Buzzard Attack Chopper, the Savage, P-996 LAZER and the Hydra.

Aircraft Bomb
  • Damage: Very High
  • Range: Medium
  • Fire Rate: Medium (multiple bombs)
  • Coverage: Straight Fall
The Aircraft Bomb is a bomb that can be controlled when dropped in a slowly motion and can devastate a large group of vehicles. In the level 5 of Arms Trafficking Air, a special "multiple aircraft bombs" is added only for this level and the number of bombs for use cannot be controlled.

It is only seen in the Cuban 800 during the Arms Trafficking Air missions (if focus on destroy competing arms runners).

Mounted Gun
  • Damage: Medium
  • Range: High
  • Fire Rate: Medium
  • Coverage: Frontal
The Mounted Guns are machine guns with moderate rate of fire and shots like a "shotgun", but these are very accurate and can kill a pedestrian or police with few shots.

Despite being featured in the JB 700, they are only used during a mission.

Mounted Autocannon
  • Damage:
    • Medium (Half-track)
    • High (Anti-Aircraft Trailer)
  • Range: Medium
  • Fire Rate:
    • Medium (Half-track)
    • Low (Anti-Aircraft Trailer)
  • Coverage: 360 degrees
The Mounted Autocannons are weapons that must be operated manually by a gunner, but they have excellent damage over targets and unarmored vehicles. The ones on the Half-track behaves like .50 caliber guns, while the ones on the Anti-Aircraft Trailer behaves like two tank cannons.

It is seen on the Half-track and the Anti-Aircraft Trailer (both as options).

Both vehicles employs 2cm (20mm) Flak 38 autocannons. One should note that the Anti-Aircraft trailer's flak cannons have a limited ammo capacity, while the Half-Track has infinite ammo capacity.

Trivia

  • Along with these weapons, there are at least 5 unusable weapons:
    • The ICBM's missile on the back (London 1969).
    • The Hunter's Anti-tank missiles next to the usable rocket pods (Vice City-Vice City Stories)
    • The Launch's Rear MG on the rear end (San Andreas).
    • The Rhino's roof mounted MG and Co-axial MG (GTA V).
  • AI-controlled Police Mavericks (3D Universe) use an invisible Machine Gun that can even destroy a Rhino. The player cannot use this machine gun, however.
  • In an early development for the Annihilator, instead of having four miniguns, there are only one minigun and the four stub wings are loaded with some sort of fuel tanks.
  • In GTA V, the Buzzard and the P-996 Lazer can select guided and un-guided rockets after the patch 1.16.
  • As of the Gunrunning update, certain vehicles can be customized to wield Miniguns, 20 mm Flak Cannons, 40 mm Grenade Launchers, Rockets, Mortars, Anti-Aircraft Missiles, and many other weapons.
