Real-Life weapons are harder to find, and have been moved to the top of buildings and in alleyways, out of the way, although weapons are commonly found before big "shootout" missions in plain sight for the player to find. ==Melee==
 
Melee weapons are used when the player does not have any firearms or when a situation does not call for one, such as a mission where the player must threaten a target without killing him.

Unarmed, the player is able to dodge attacks, disarm opponents, and perform ground [[Fist|punches]] and kicks, lefts and rights, and uppercuts and jabs. Moves can be strung together to create a combo. On some occasions, the player can perform "Stun" hits.
 
 
Fighting unarmed is the best way to fight someone without killing them, something that can be important in several missions.
 
 
With the fist selected as current weapon, the player can pick up random objects off the streets, such as a brick, bottle, mug, cheese, cup noodles, jewelry box, perfume bottle, empty glass bottle, sex toys, candle stand, cigarette, cue ball, cup pad, drink can, food wrapper, burger, doughnut, sauce holder, sauce dish, cellphone, radio (dropped by cop) etc. However the player cannot switch weapons while an item is picked up, unless the item is a thrown item such as a brick. Oddly, all items on the street that the player picks up do the same damage when thrown at someone. Objects which can be picked up and thrown will not disappear no matter how far away it is from the player. Given an example, if the player picks up an object from The Majestic Hotel rooftop and throws it down the building from the balcony, the player will still find the object which he/she threw earlier on in its original condition either with it landed on the road or on the pavement/sidewalk when the player make a visit to the street level where the object landed.

The [[Baseball_Bat|bat]] can be swung left or right. The player can also block attacks with it. The bat can be useful when the player doesn't want to draw attention to themselves, since it is considered a "silent" weapon, though less so than the Knife. The bat is a superior weapon against an unprotected opponent to the Knife, as it will often knock them down them in one or two blows rendering them defenseless. It can also knock weapons out of opponent's hands when they are aiming in the direction of the player. In [[The Lost and the Damned]], the Baseball Bat can be used to attack enemies during a motorcycle race.

They are very efficient at taking someone down without getting police attention. This is helpful on the street and in missions when attracting police attention isn't the best idea. Developed in the 1980s by Austrian engineer, Gaston Glock, the eponymous pistol soon became the world's most popular civilian and Law Enforcement sidearm. With its polymer frame and simple, internal striker-fired mechanism, the Glock series of pistols is both lightweight and extremely durable. It is the standard pistol for most of the game, and it is the standard sidearm of all Law Enforcement Agencies in Liberty City. It has a decent range when shooting, and has about 3 to 5 shots to kill someone when shooting normally.

In 1979, Magnum Research Inc. set out to create the first gas-operated, magnum-caliber pistol. While the end product is generally considered too heavy and too expensive to serve as a practical combat pistol, it hasn't stopped the Desert Eagle from becoming the weapon of choice for fictional bad guys. Based roughly on the classic [[wikipedia:Ithaca 37|Ithaca Model 37]], the Stakeout is a pump-action shotgun made in large numbers for the civilians, the Military, and the Law Enforcement Agencies. The pistol grip and shorter overall length makes it perfect for home defense and law enforcement. The rate of fire of the Micro Uzi is listed as approximately 900 rpm (rounds per minute), though in reality, it is closer to 1,250 RPM. At this incredibly high rate of fire, the weapon is difficult to control while on full-auto, but short bursts can be accurate at ranges up to about 30 yards (27 meters). The model in game appears to be that of a semi-automatic UZI Pistol, made for the civilian market, due to the lack of the folding metel stock arm, or the lugs and nuts used to attach it. One could assume that Little Jacob illegally modified it to fire fully-automatic, something real-life arms dealers do very often.

The following is a list of weapons that can be used in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Grand Theft Auto IV features 16 separate weapons. Unlike previous titles, the weapons have two strength tiers instead of the usual three.

There are no model names for weapons and instead they use generic naming (For example, the M4 is called Carbine Rifle). Weapons spawned in the map or dropped by an NPC will not float in the air, like in previous installments; they will instead lie on the ground and emit a slight orange glow, in order to be more noticeable to the player. Dropped guns act like any other interactable prop in the game; they can be moved if anything touches them (vehicle, NPCs, bullets, etc.)

Unlike other games, the player does not necessarily need to kill the NPC in order to obtain their weapon; instead, they can be disarmed by either counterattacks (for melee weapons) or with a well-placed shot on their hands, although they will still attack the player with alternative ways, such as fist or another weapon.

Artworks
  • There are artworks of LCPD and National Tactical Response Unit officers using Colt M16A1s.
  • In another artwork, two LCPD officers are seen using the stairs and aiming their weapons. One is seen with a MP5-style SMG and another with a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun.
  • Another artwork depicts Niko with a stock-less SPAS-12.
  • An artwork depicts two criminals, one wielding a pistol and other aiming with a shotgun, possibly a sawed-off Remington 870.

  • MP5: The HK MP5 was seen in a pre-release screenshot for GTA IV with a 15-round magazine, and was most likely cut due to its manufacturer, Heckler & Koch, having trademarked the distinctive shape of the MP5.
  • Python: The Colt Python was going to be featured in GTA IV but was cut for unknown reasons. It was shown in a pre-release render of the game.
  • Silenced Pistol: Just like the Python, a Silenced Pistol, that seems to be based on a Beretta 92FS, was spotted in a pre-release screenshot, but was cut before the game's release. A sound file and the texture still exist in the game files, and the pistol can be re-enabled via mods.
  • Zastava M70: An assault rifle based on the weapon of the same name was set to appear in the game, but was cut. It is seen during the second trailer for the game, "Looking For That Special Someone", during in which Niko attacked the LCPD with the weapon. Given the properties of the weapon, it was probably replaced by the current AK-47.
  • Flamethrower: a few lines of code are left over.
  • Minigun: again, another few lines of code.

Trivia

  • Unlike in the 3D Universe, the protagonists in the GTA IV are able to pick up ammo from weapons spawn around the city and during missions instead of having to replace their current weapon with the spawn one. This allows players to max out ammo during free roam with a single weapon spawn point - they just need to arrive with a different one in the same class (i.e, having a Carbine Rifle and approach an Assault Rifle spawn in the city), walk up to the weapon on the ground to collect ammo for it, then leaving a short distance and coming back to pick up more ammo, until they are maxed out.
  • When any of the protagonists in the GTA IV trinity wields a weapon, they appear to get the weapon from the inside of their shirt/jacket realistically, which is different from the 3D Universe, which the weapon appears in the character's hands out of nowhere (called Hammerspace) when going through the inventory.
  • In the PS3 version of the game, while the weapons are being fired, there is no sound of the gun shells falling to the ground, though it can be clearly heard in the Xbox 360 and PC versions. This also applies to EFLC.
  • Gunshots, Sticky Bombs, and APC explosions in multiplayer can be heard from very far away in quiet areas, further away from what would be expected. This only applies to players and not NPCs.
